I have to give you credit, your one of the few reviewers that called out the shifter issue between first and second. Too many reviewers just avoided that subject, thank you for giving us the real review not a sales pitch. Cheers Mate.
I bought and own “21”R/S, I had the “exclusive” model which has everything on it (not heated seat) and I had full bmw luggage the price was £15.5k. I’ve just put some Metzeller M9’s on it and that has really livened up the handling 😊 at 59 years old and riding mostly sports bikes for the last 40 years I am still over the moon with it 😊👍🏻👍🏻
I brought a 1250R in '22 thinking they're the "underrated hidden gem" of the BMW line. Now I've got one I realise they're everywhere, you just never take a second look. Great bike though, lot of character and a surprising amount of boogie. Heavy as all hell though.
I have the R1250R 2022 and I must admit it's technically the best bike I've ever ridden/owned. It's very comfortable, can be very laid back but also pretty sporty when needed. The torque is the highlight of the bike. Still not quite fond of the looks, bikes before this were the Z900RS and Triumph Bobber but purely from a riding-standpoint and what it offers, it's fantastic.
I have a 2020 RS and it's excellent. The engine is superb. It'll loaf along if you want, or scream if you give it the beans. One thing you missed is that the 2023 RS now has an option to have the tubular bars from the R to give you the same rider position.
Indeed! I noticed that when I was editing back home - might be a good shout although I actually preferred the position of the RS to the flat bars on the R
@@Pyrrho_ At least in the US, it's now listed as a specific option on BMW's site. It wasn't previously which meant you were paying for two sets of bars. Yes, technically it has always been a pretty easy change.
Most underrated bike out there. Most GS riders would be well served on an r12r/s and have lower center of gravity. I have a ‘15 r1200r decated and tuned and it is pure joy. I love these bikes! If you could only have one bike/engine it would have to be a BMW boxer.
Have owned two RS and two R. 3 RT & 5GS. Lots of other makes. Loved them all but my favourite is the 1250 R. Not the best looking but my absolute favourite !!!!!!!
The R 1250 R is certainly ine of the most underrated bike (outside Germany, where they sell plenty). Yeah it’s not the most powerfull naked, yes it’s expensive. But just try one if you are a big naked bike rider and you will most likely end up buying one. The torque, the smoothness, the comfort, the precision it’s just an excellent package.
So true. I ended up buying one yesterday 😊 Unbelievable torque starting at 2000 rpm combined with smoothness and precision. Never had so much fun on a test ride; hope they deliver soon, dealer was talking about 8 to 10 weeks delivery time here in Germany.
I've owned the R and the RS. Take the handlebar from the RS and stick it on the R, and then the R is simply the best boxer bike that BMW has, hands down.
Can it be made into a touring machine? I love the look of the 1250R more than the RS. But I just feel the wind blast after some long days would start to make me fatigued?
@@inked-96 since you’re asking on youtube comment’s I’ll assume you’re doing very light touring. So yes, they definitely can. But if you are planning to actually do multiples days touring regularly I would suggest checking the RT or the GS range (even the K if budget is large)
@thierryfaquet7405 Currently, I have a GSA, and it's not for me. I want more fun but have the ability to tour. To me, the GSA is awful. I did some light green lanes with it, but I didn't like it. Too heavy. I rode 99% on the road and fell for the GS trap. So, looking at selling my GSA, I should see 11k and funding the 1200R and keeping 4.5k in my pocket. I'm just hoping a little screen can reduce some of the wind blast.

Great video giving overall specs on the bikes. If you want a sports bike then these bikes are not what you want to go for. I’ve owned an R1200R and now a R1250R and to be honest this is a bike for everything you will ever need (except off road and track). Commute, Tour Europe and Sunday blast ☑️ ☑️ ☑️ For some reason this has been one of the best overlooked bikes for a while now and for people who don’t want a sports bike, who want something that is fast and fun yet sensible and comfortable I don’t think there is another bike in production today that can beat it. Plus you have to remember even at 4000 rpm in any gear on this bike you will be breaking the law. More speed / torque is simply not needed unless your off to the track or the autobahn. As for the look of the bike, well every bike looks one way or another and beauty is in the eye of the beholder 😁. I love the R1250R, but the 2023 updates won’t be enough to get me to chop in my 2019 version. All the best and thanks for so many good reviews.
All you need to know : 2013 K1300S > R1250RS 2013 K1300R > R1250R way quicker acceleration, faster top speed, 173hp, similar 140Nm torque, way better engine and exhaust sound, also electronic suspension, similar weight, better looking, etc
I Tried the RS and the R and chose the R as it was far more fun, it is interesting that you were less enthusiastic about the R then a few other bikes I've seen you review which I looked at like the Speed Twin, Z900 RS and the new HD Sportsters. The BMW R1250R would run rings around them as a motorcycle yet gets a lukewarm review
I picked up my new, white 2022 from Motorrad, fully loaded with panniers for £16,100. I actually had a S1000GT on order, but cancelled it as soon as I saw and test rode the RS, different level. I have had super-nakeds, sports, tourers, hypers, etc, but this thing just does everything well. Maybe not the 'best' at individual things like speed, handling, luggage capacity, etc, but if you want the most capable all-rounder on the road (not off-road), this is the bike. The engine is an absolute peach.
RS, BMW should of showed luggage package. As a sport tourer, would of liked to see & hear your thoughts on FULL package. Thanks, always a pleasure, quality work
I have the color matched BMW hard luggage and liners. I like them and they appear quite durable, however they're not rated waterproof and quite expensive.
What feels weird to me is that I bought an R1250R in August 2021, and uh... all of the "new" things on this one, mine also has? Including the sports dash. So not sure what's newer / better over the 21 models. That said, I absolutely love the R1250R to bits! Easily the best riding experience I had so far!
I know it's an older BMW that isn't made anymore, but I'd love to see a comparison of a 2015-2016 BMW K1300S vs a 2020+ BMW R1250RS. They're both a couple of my favorite sport touring bikes. That would be a wild comparison review! Just my opinion
That’s what you have to do if you can’t afford 10 bikes. I like so many different types but I just had to pick one that my heart desires because even though there may be better ones, I can’t do them all. I don’t blame you for doing that at all.
Both bikes are no brainers. Good ride, shaft drive, dealers are usually around and reliable etc. Many people don't like it for those reasons that it's seen as conservative etc.
Love my ‘21 R1250R. Engine is perfect for the road in my opinion. I’ve got the base model as wasn’t interested in quick shifter or active suspension. Not sure it’s worth upgrading but I do like the new grey colour 👍
I never buy base, strictly for resell. I’m like most consumers, if there’s a better version of something I’m already spending a good amount, might as well not regret having the best.
I think the BMW pricing options are a good idea. When I bought my S1000R I chose the Sport model then added a couple of M parts as it worked out better value, as I didn't like the M colour, or need all the M parts...
Bought a 2023 feb 2024, 2000USD$ discount due to overstock at dealer here in Charlotte NC. Fit and finish are top shelf, great torque, light handling. Came from a 2013 Moto Guzzi v7 which is a Nice bike but its like riding a 1970 BSA..... bohemian tech.
BMW 1250 RS is one of those bikes that you can easily put into category “do it all kind of bike” Its small enough for urban riding big enough for 500 km touring (90% doesn’t have time for longer rides and if they find time than it’s once or maybe twice a year) Can be ridden by short and tall riders. Mechanically perfect, performance wise you’ll never need more, it’s agile enough, maintaining is easy (no chains) very good brakes, excellent electronic and suspension, premium fit and finish. And on top of it, there is real life “feel good factor” this bike provides. I know that GS owners will say NO, GS is “do it all kind of bike” but I will ask them only few questions, how many times you have ridden your GS off-road? 1% of your total mileage? So what is the point of owning the bike that is so capable off road and not be ridden in such conditions and in meantime you sacrifice all other categories that RS do it better?
Just wondering bit about this “nice, does the job, … “ … it’s an absolut fun-machine with fantastic handling (deep COG), relatively “light weight”, the biggest torque compared to all other nakeds (same as the SD1290R !), enough Power & a well done ESA. With the Dynamic Mode there’s no way to get rid of this Boxer in the twisties, it’s wonderful for travelling (even with Sozia), relaxed Leg-position, nice finish … best roadster ever (for taller person, who looks funny on a r9t) fully underestimated ❤
without discussion RS, I tried it, put the money on the table and took it, without discussion. good wind protection, super comfort, I walked 320 km without any pain, so? please look at the italian comparative and you'll know what I'm talking about ! Nice video Bob !
I bloody love my 2022 r 1250 r sport biggest problem for me was helmet wind noise . I got the bmw sport screen and topped it with an MRA screen topper . Great result
I know the RT is a lot more baggage fairing power windshield etc.. but I am curious about the riding behavior differences between the RS and the RT. The suspension differences on the RT are significant and if you're at 20 grand I would think the RT would be the better choice... but every rider is different. I believe the seat is wider on the RT as well. Just curious for thoughts on this...
Very different, I've owned every single watercooled boxer in the platform. R is the fastest and most flickable I loved mine for twisties and all daily riding. RS is great as a sport tourer, but the slight fork offset and rake difference to the R made me raise the forks on my RS to get it to move around as well as the R. The RT is a great tourer, and will hustle in the corners, but is really a grandpa couch. The GS, well, it's the GS, we know what it's all about. That said, I hate the telelever on the RT and GS. Front end feels numb.
I've had a '03 R1100RS, a '04 K1200RS, and now a ’20 R1250RS. Most aggressive seating position of all of them, only one with standard forks. I'd take the Telelever front over more feel simply because of its negation of nose dive under braking. The K felt faster in how it delivered power and was smoother. My first RS had significantly more carrying capacity with the OEM hard cases. This is by far the most fun and powerful. The shiftcam 1250 is wonderful.
This helps a lot all. Getting different views really does make a difference I have owned both a GS and an RT. But have not had the opportunity to test ride an RS. The comment about the dive negation was spot on for me as well. It doesn’t happen often but when you have to really stop hard and fast, it does make a difference!
Always liked the R, and the RS, in fact the whole boxer range including the r9t, even though they a little farty sounding. I had a 1250GS triple black for a while but sold it as a bike doesn't have to weigh 250kg! But they all handly like a dream...current bike is a Zero FXE🤣 thanks for the review
RS 2023 looks nice with the zero luggage rack single seat option but the price wise to get the spec at nearly 20K is way to steep given whats on the market currently, for now I will stick with my 2022 kwak z900rs... thanks for the review
I like the new LED lights all around. That was a major flaw of the earlier models. They just need to give it a little more horsepower, with all that torque, and then BMW have a perfect bike.
Yeah, MAX BMW, every R1250 R is priced at $18,500 (++++) with premium everything. If you want a base model you have to order one. I have a 2013, last of the air cooled, and I think I'll just stick with it.
Weird, ordered my RS in sport colour, cruise control and heated grips. £500 discount just over $17000. Special order, arriving next month, 6 weeks waiting. Will be using my GIVI luggage from the GS.
I already own a Triumph 1200 Scrambler, but don't like to go too far on it, it's just not (for my skinny ar5e) a distance bike. The R1250R though, with the high screen, solo only, name another 100% practical daily ride!!
MOTOBob, I own 2023 R1250 R (GS and nineT Scrambler as well). I use the R for day rides and short trips of 1-3 nights in hotel. It has the Sport Screen which mostly protects the back of the TFT. I have been thinking about changing to the RS for the wind protection from a little large fairing and the windscreen. Is there a noticable, or better, significant difference in wind protection with the RS?
Great review... Love the RS version .. . The big problem is by the time you spec it up to nearly 20k ..and at this price you can get a GS which may or may not be your preference but the resale of these bikes will probably mean taking a huge financial loss as the market for the RS is considerably smaller..!! 😢 . Just my opinion
I haven’t ridden the R19 but I’ve owned my R1250R since 2019. I’ve added the factory fly screen, which makes it such a versatile bike: tour, cruise and scratch. My last few bikes were 600cc supersport screamers but when I retired I wanted a grown up bike and this fits the bill perfectly.
Love the RS, but wish BMW took the model into a slightly sportier direction. Also agree with the throttle mapping critique...also found it too lazy and not direct or sporty enough. Finally, the OEM rubber is rubbish, again too much touring focus and not enough sport. A good set a sport tyres with a more aggressive profile absolutely transforms the handling.
I wish BMW would make a bike akin to the Suzuki GSX S1000F. A fully fared street bike, not 100 lb heavier than the sport bikes it's based on, could do some touring but not really a sport touring bike. Just a beautiful street bike with upright ergonomics.
The standard 'R' version has the awful transformer headlight the MT09 had before Yamaha realized nobody liked it and changed it!? Go figure!? Good vid, thanks... may have to try this 👍
The 2013 K1300R is better in almost every way than the R1250R, same for the K1300S over the R1250RS, way quicker acceleration, faster top speed, 173hp, similar 140Nm torque, way better engine and exhaust sound, also electronic suspension, similar weight, better looking, etc. Try one.
3 years ago I 'downgraded' from a Suzuki GSXR750R to a BMWR1250R. Literally more performance on the road, much better fuel consumption, handling great, just as flickable on the twisities as the Suzuki (my style of riding), if anything much less skittish. The bike, for me at least, is more comfortable (I did a 2.5 hour ride yesterday, no problem). The only thing is the engine cannot be revved like the straight 4, but then it just pulls, never take it above 4500 rpm, no need. Also the engine is a bugger to start in cold weather, and that is a downside. I have been riding bikes since 1979, and candidly cannot think of a better bike to buy for my style of riding, though would seriously consider a Street Triple RS.
I just saw the base model in the car park and immediately thought I must do some research. Nah, seriously stunning looking machine. Right up my alley, currently being a Yamaha FZ1N rider looking for my next commuter. Unfortunately the sound is just deflating. What a shame 😢
I'm trying to decide single seat or heated seat on the RS. Does anyone have experience with moving to a heated seat? Do they make much difference? I had a K1200RS with heated grips and wouldn't be without them.
I really like these bikes, but I despise that big ugly dock sitting in the eyeline. If you want any options on this bike you have to deal with it, and then pay for the BMW GPS.
So nothing changed for 2023… clearly BMW is trying to sell these before they announce the updated GS and the new engine. That will follow to both these bikes later.
The R1250R is a peach. But one must remember, the R1200R is not bad either. A lovely bike! Only two (imo) downthings. Weight and those pointy cylinders. Otherwise a lovely bike indeed! Thank you mr Bob!
Any luggage options? There seems to be some mounts on the bikes, are there hard panniers available f.i.? Also, Bob, I love your videos and been following you for a long time - I think you need to start considering upgrading to 4K ;-)
In the states, with respect to specking it up the way you want to, its an all or nothing affair. You have one package and it contains every upgrade they have. Buy it or don’t. So all the bikes here are (USD) -$15K, or 20K. It’s infuriating.
Rode the R1250R today and I found it pretty boring, and the sound from that engine was terrible. Brakes are great and ride quality was very comfortable, but again, I found it boring.
I would never buy an Akrapovic slip on again for my Beemer bike after the pitiful customer service I received after my pipe carbon fiber failed after a year on the bike!
For me it was in the delivery of that 136hp - even in the dynamic riding mode the throttle still feels pretty relaxed. Contrast with the 90hp Honda Hornet for example which wants to wheelie everywhere in Sport mode
Had the R and loved riding it, but it didn’t stay in the stable because it was ugly. A year later bought the RS because of the great engine and I could stomach the looks. It didn’t stay in the stable because it steered slow much slower than the R. No fun when the road got twisty (R was much more fun). So, I’ve got a Z900RS Cafe now - awesome and beautiful bike.
I have 2 Bmw,s......love my bikes......but.....the old fashion boxer on a modern design such as the R 1250 and the RS 1250.....(My personal opinion).......It does nor work any more..........

That's quite a walk
Italian comparative...V100 Mandello?
I bloody love my 2022 r 1250 r sport biggest problem for me was helmet wind noise . I got the bmw sport screen and topped it with an MRA screen topper . Great result
Pics, Cooper?
@@caferacerqu33n Thanks Daniela, thats exactly the differences Bob should have pointed out!
Have a test ride, I did and I bought one, totally love it
Have a ’20 RS and have the Sport TFT mode. It was a firmware update BMW offered last spring.
RS 2023 looks nice with the zero luggage rack single seat option but the price wise to get the spec at nearly 20K is way to steep given whats on the market currently, for now I will stick with my 2022 kwak z900rs... thanks for the review
Love the base price. The problem is you can only find fully-tricked out models in dealers near to me. Base price models are very hard to find.
Would be nice if you could configure on the website and have that specific bike delivered 🤷♂️
Good point!
these bikes dont get enough love
I like the new LED lights all around. That was a major flaw of the earlier models. They just need to give it a little more horsepower, with all that torque, and then BMW have a perfect bike.
Here in the US the base price is a joke. All the dealers will stock is the fully loaded models at $20k+, and that doesn’t include the panniers.
Heard that brother... what bmw stands for me is big money withdrawal out of your account
@@MR-vt3np Are you in the US or UK?
Bikes have become a luxury item. Don’t see how the business can last.
The EasyJet marketing department also works for BMW. Think I will buy an MT09 SP instead.
I'm 80 yrs old and I think the R 1250 R is very compelling. I'm torn between the R19 and this 1250 R. 🙂
The stock tires are garbage. Replaced with a set of Dunlop RS4s and it changed the bike.
All of these Cam-Heads are amazing I wish I had one of each including the GS and RT.
I wish BMW would make a bike akin to the Suzuki GSX S1000F. A fully fared street bike, not 100 lb heavier than the sport bikes it's based on, could do some touring but not really a sport touring bike. Just a beautiful street bike with upright ergonomics.
I love the sound of the Boxer engine together with it’s tremendous torque but got tired of bashing my shins on the pots😢
How did that happen? Didn’t notice myself - I assume when you’re hanging off a bit?
I got used to that in the first 50 miles or so.
@@motobob it wasn’t a problem when riding Bob, it was when I was having to paddle it backwards out of my shed.
Good review thanks, I'm interested in the rs.
Like the jacket you're wearing...may I ask the brand and name?
The standard 'R' version has the awful transformer headlight the MT09 had before Yamaha realized nobody liked it and changed it!? Go figure!? Good vid, thanks... may have to try this 👍
Big BMW boxer fan. If they could squeeze another 15HP out of it and update the styling a bit, they'd have the best street bike on the planet IMO.
Try one.
Thinking about upgrading from my 2013 BMW R 1200 R and still unsure what I want next.
The existence of Motobob implies the existence of Motovagene.
I was so close to buying that same RS but I decided on the s1000XR instead.
Great video! I always buy my motorcycles loaded with everything they offer!
I really appreciate the opportunity to fantasize about the fully appointed versions of the bikes I already can’t afford.
Sorry WW!
Bought 23 R1250RS Saturday fully loaded. It's my Cadillac and my 22 Tuono factory is my Ferrari
😅
I've just checked the BMW web page and neither of these two bike are available any more. Are dare say they are getting ready for the 1300 version.
Thought excercise for RUclipsland. R18R? Like a German MT-01?
How did you find the wind protection on both when riding. Many people seem to complain the RS doesn’t give much protection from head buffeting.
I like the k1300r best actually. No idea why they didn't make it anymore.
I just saw the base model in the car park and immediately thought I must do some research. Nah, seriously stunning looking machine. Right up my alley, currently being a Yamaha FZ1N rider looking for my next commuter. Unfortunately the sound is just deflating. What a shame 😢
RS all day
Good luck getting a base with ESA only in the US lol
Hey i got something to say, Motobob still nr🥇
👍🙏
I'm trying to decide single seat or heated seat on the RS. Does anyone have experience with moving to a heated seat? Do they make much difference? I had a K1200RS with heated grips and wouldn't be without them.
If I was in the market Id be pissed the RS has the funky bar set up...shame they didnt put the standard mounts atop the forks....wtf?
the TFT screen completely ruins the look of the R model ... but not as much as the headlight ...
I do believe the 1250R is quicker than a MT09 SP over a 1/4 mile?
I really like these bikes, but I despise that big ugly dock sitting in the eyeline. If you want any options on this bike you have to deal with it, and then pay for the BMW GPS.
So nothing changed for 2023… clearly BMW is trying to sell these before they announce the updated GS and the new engine. That will follow to both these bikes later.
I personally think this is more fun to ride than the 4 cylinder BMW.
Thinking trading in my mental triumph speed triple 1200rs for a more versatile bmw r1200r -
would love to know the cost of the accessories! Scary I bet. Heated grips should be standard
There's a bike builder on BMW's website with all prices listed.
If you have a extra 2k odd you can have panniers and top box all with the same key
I am 6ft tall and i find the r ergos much better the rs riding position is really uncomfortable
Thanks
Hey mate. Get some yellow lenses and you will have the Ali G imitation perfected.
Ngl i had no idea that 1250RS exists, knew about R but never about RS. Still can't process how the hell i didn't know
I am very interested in the R1250R. I’d like to add crash bars and a windscreen. I’m in USA
Except the optional features are way over priced for what they are. Almost without exception. That's where and how they make their money.
Since when is 136hp not a lot?
This naked can definitely be and act like a hooligan bike.
For me it was in the delivery of that 136hp - even in the dynamic riding mode the throttle still feels pretty relaxed. Contrast with the 90hp Honda Hornet for example which wants to wheelie everywhere in Sport mode
@@motobob Yes, perfect for the demographic who would buy these bikes and not a Hornet. On my 'RS I can sneeze and not worry about doing a wheelie ;)
Easy to do hundreds of miles at a time on the RS
Like the motobob
Loved the bike but can't afford😭
Strange upgrade if GS 1250 comes new. RS looks like no real upgrade, just same bike. Strange not to have a new engine like they talk for 1250 GS.
Waoooo Beautiful Bike
Had the R and loved riding it, but it didn’t stay in the stable because it was ugly. A year later bought the RS because of the great engine and I could stomach the looks. It didn’t stay in the stable because it steered slow much slower than the R. No fun when the road got twisty (R was much more fun).
So, I’ve got a Z900RS Cafe now - awesome and beautiful bike.
HaHa, funny, they use their car seat symbol for the heated seats! lmao
I have 2 Bmw,s......love my bikes......but.....the old fashion boxer on a modern design such as the R 1250 and the RS 1250.....(My personal opinion).......It does nor work any more..........
r1250r world no1 naked bike.😊
