Why President Trump Couldn’t Close the Deal on Obamacare Repeal | "Trump's Takeover" | FRONTLINE

  • President Trump thought he could use his skills as a salesman to bridge a divide in the Republican Party over the bill to repeal and replace Obamacare. There was a problem, though. As the FRONTLINE documentary "Trump's Takeover" reports, the president didn’t seem to understand or care about the details of the bill he was selling.

    “The president was not particularly engaged in the policy details. That was pretty apparent,” Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Penn.) tells FRONTLINE. “The president seemed to defer to Congress, largely, and basically, ‘Whatever you guys pass, I’ll sign.’”
    This scene is an excerpt from the new documentary, "Trump's Takeover," which goes inside President Trump's high-stakes battle for control of the Republican Party.
    It examines how the president, who vowed to defeat the Washington establishment, has worked to remake the party in his own image -- counter-punching when criticized, and publicly attacking Republicans who defy him.
    From Trump’s attacks on party leaders on Twitter after the repeal-and-replace bill died, to a split over what many in the party said was the president’s inadequate response to deadly violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, to when Congress ultimately delivered a major legislative victory for Trump with the passage of tax reform, the documentary traces the president’s takeover of the party, from the perspective of Republican lawmakers.
    "Trump's Takeover" premieres Tues., April 10 at 10/9c on PBS & online: to.pbs.org/2GNBtMc

    • @fiftysquiggly
      @fiftysquiggly 3 года назад +2

      To the contrary - I think that democracy, along with most other forms of politics, is very much about making deals. Just that the 'deals' in politics can't always be translated into dollars and I don't think Trump is able to recognize any form of measurement other than 'USD'. Additionally, for all of his shtick about "I'm a deal maker", I personally think Mr. Trump is quite shit at it lol.

    Ironic the Republican Mitt Romney (Gov.-Mass) started free health care for his Massachusettes people (Romneycare) and O'Bama's people liked it so much that he designed the Affordable Care Act after many of those principles.

    • @notthatyouasked6656
      @notthatyouasked6656 3 года назад +4

      Neither "Romneycare" nor "Obamacare" is or ever was free except for a very small number of people who qualify for deep subsidies and/or Medicaid. Romney made it mandatory to have health insurance in Mass. and offered a marketplace for people who didn't have access to insurance through their employers. This was actually the idea of a Republican PAC that wanted to cover everyone but not destroy the US's insurance company infrastructure. Obama built a nationwide program emulating many of those ideas and adding additional ones.
      What's truly ironic is the number of people who are known to have said things like, "Thank God I got coverage through the Affordable Care Act instead of that stupid Obamacare!" They are of course the same thing.

    Most people probably see the potential benefit. It was a flawed bill from the start, but instead of attempting to repeal 60+ times imagine what could have been done if the same energy went into refining it. It might have actually befitting countless tax paying citizens instead of wasting time. Congress sure appears to be a well oiled machine. Those guys have forgotten who works for whom.

      In the past, conservatism in the US used to be ideologically based around ideals of going slow, of being cautious. You can see this reflected in their support for things like the EPA and regulations intended to bring caution. Nowadays, thanks to wide-spread research science, most policies can be reflected on their merits before they happen, and yet conservatives reject them anyways. This has led to a widespread condemnation of science in conservatism, and thus a tendency to not be educated. Also, the southern strategy has been systematically leading to racism, or at least racists, being central to the Republicans. It got votes for Reagan, but tore apart the country.

      PS. And is not brainwashed. They were like that to start with. They just found like-minded ppl and got Trump, who landed the highest and most influential position in the US Government. The only problem is that they didn't learn enough about how the US government work to have complete control. Also, thanks to 9/11 and Bush, that our check and bal. is off. Too much power has been shifted to the Executive Branch.
