Bad President, but great human being
I grew up watching him bungle speeches as President...now he is so articulate and touching. Not a great president, no, but a good man and a friend.
Bush has showed more eloquence in 5 minutes than our current POTUS in 15 months.
John McCain chose very well when he asked Bush and Obama to do his eulogy. He was a smart uniter to the end.
I often disagreed with Bush's policies . . . and his intelligence . . . but I never once doubted his character--that, at his core, he was a good man who was simply doing what he felt to be right. I can't say the same about the current occupant of the Oval Office . . .

I've never questioned his heart and passion for the country and it's people. He was a good man who did what he could, with what we had, in a time of chaos and peril.
Hopefully our next president can be someone we can once again be proud of and respect. I have no respect for the man in the office now. A man with such lack of empathy and compassion for others should not be leading America.

You are probably right, especially with those who put party before country, doing what appeals to a baser instinct instead of what is truly right and honorable. I disagreed with McCain frequently but always believed that he was doing what he truly believed was right and best. I never doubted his service, sacrifice, integrity or honor. America and especially the Republican party lost one of their best.

Cedric Ward I always felt Bush was an underrated speaker. He would occasionally misspeak or stumble on his words, but he had a folksy way about him that I found charming.

You know, the thing about John McCain is that I think the eulogies would have been the same, with or without this administration. I think it's amazing he chose his two biggest political rivals as the people who presented them. They just resonate more right now.

I never voted for Bush, & he's far from the best orator, but he's far from stupid. Unlike Trump, he's an avid reader & held "reading contests" while in office, ranging from the classics to current affairs.

Very nice speech Mr. President. I only had professional exchanges with Mr. McCain, which left me with a very poor view of him. I wish I had been able to have exchanges with him under different circumstances. My heart goes out to his family. May he rest in peace.

George bush only was in office for about 6 months at that time, and with in that time Bush was getting use to being in office. If you look at leading up to 9/11 you would find it out to being Clinton's fault. Bill Clinton missed the signs of 9/11. If the former president had authorized the assassination of Osama bin Laden thousands of Americans wouldn’t have died.

I re-watched this. "John respected dignity that does not stop at borders, or the abuse of dictator...he could not abide abuse of power and swaggering despots" . If I had to vote for a republican...it would have been him, but he alone stood against Trump and his evil. We will remember you, John, and I hope one day we only remember that evil that you opposed as a example of how America should never be again. But...thats unlikely.

As much as I disagreed with this man while he was in office he rose to the moment here and delivered some decency that has been long been missing in our national discourse. Good speech and hopefully our politicians can stop being giant babies and get some work done.

I disagreed with President Bush politically almost across the board. But I never believed for a second that he meant this country ill. I've always felt like he meant well, even though I disagreed with his methods. But he definitely delivered a really nice eulogy here! Kudos, Mr. President!
