CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rocky (Eric Stoltz) is humiliated when Diana (Laura Dern) introduces him to her parents, who cannot see beyond his deformities.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom's boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won't have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son's rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy's kindness and compassion. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn't come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy.

I wrote this back in college, circa 2011. It's funny how I'm getting all these updates on this post from this comment. I found this movie because the album "Rocky Dennis" by Dez & Nobs samples it. Give that album a listen if you are interested.
Darrien Mack no I thought they would think that their daughter like him cuz she can’t see how ugly he is (I’m guessing that’s what her parents were thinking) also the thing is that her parent don’t know about rocky, they only saw his physical appearance.

I see ugly everyday when I look in the mirror and that boy Rocky isn't an ugly person, not truly. He deserved better than the hand he was dealt.

why wasn't Diana's mother happy when she said "that's wonderful" about Rocky being the most friendliest camper? The way she said "that's wonderful" was totally rude and snobby.

How were they supposed to react while meeting their blind girl (they must be very protective of her)'s first boyfriend on the spot? Some of my girlfriends parents were not even as polite as them toward me when we were teenagers... and I look normal.

As a young punk, I would’ve acted this way; but as a grown man, I would’ve trusted my daughters judgement, and welcomed him with open arms. Plus, he was such a beautiful soul and kind. What’s not to love about Rocky? As those parents were cruel to be so cold to a young man their daughter truly cares for.

Hard to imagine such a situation. It is so easy to judge the parent in this scene but you know most of us would react the same way.
Yeah it's upsetting to see but I doubt anyone who claims they would act differently wouldn't actually in reality. It's so easy to claim that you'd be better than everyone else and treat that person differently when you don't actually have to put your money where your mouth is.
Yeah.. unfortunately i'd be lying if i said i would have reacted differently, i'd probably even keep them from tlkin to each other. It's just that ..my daughter is already blind ya know? Dont need to stack on with the grandkids even tho they might come out fine. Him taking advantage of her would also cross my mind.

Yeah Rocky knew that the minute he meet Diana's parents they were assholes to him only because of his condition and Diana was blind! They wouldn't even let Rocky talk to her when he tried calling her several times! Rocky wasn't dumb he knew that Diana's parents didn't like him from the start! Well now that Rocky is in heaven I am sure he is safe and with GOD!
Much the way in La Bamba when Ritchie tries repeatedly to phone Donna and her parents tell him the same thing(or that she's taking a nap,doing her homework.etc.).Same business there,Richie wasn't stupid,he knew Donna's parents disliked him because he was Mexican(and Catholic,while Donna's family could have been WASPs,seemed like typical WASPs to me). And of course,when Ritchie learns that Donna is out on a date with another guy,that does it--he goes to her house(and fortunately her mom answers the door and not her dad), asks to see her,adding,"I know she's here,"again,seeming to indicate that he wasn't stupid-each time before when he had called and was mostly told she wasn't there,he knew she really was. Just like here,each time Rocky has tried to phone Diana and is told she's not there(which is why he eventually does what he does,skips town to go upstate to see her. It really is terribly wrong to dislike someone just because they're different in some way or another; it's not their "gruesome" appearance,their race,religion,national descent,etc,it's what they really are like personally.
I meant to say that it's not a person's unusual appearance,race,religion,ethnic descent,etc,that counts,it's what you really are like by nature that counts. And both Rocky Dennis and Ritchie Valens were great guys with great personalities.

Eric Stoltz played the hell out of that role. The man was the first pick for Marty McFly. Laura Dern is amazing in this role and I feel like this was definitely a super impactful role for her in more than one way.

Tbh I dont like how they made rocky's love interest blind. It kinda sent a message that the only woman who'd ever love him would have to be blind which isnt a good message considering this movie's whole moral is that looks dont matter
They do, they're all that matter, along side money, and status. And yeah, the only way he would get anything irl is by being rich, and/or high status, period.

Everyone is talking about looks, but the girl is blind. You have a grandpa who inherited it right? But I'm guessing he still found someone, so this shallow bashing of Rocky due to looks is annoying. Not everyone is so shallow, Rocky looks like he has a good heart and if you're telling the truth, you're still living now and so is your grandpa so it's not always going to be a short life for those with this condition.

I think the issue is that the parents made no effort to get over their initial reactions, and have an open mind.

Sadly here in 2018 there is still hatred and disapproval towards the gifted but different. In my opinion the more Rocky's and Diana's we get in this world the more compassionate society can be. Maybe society just needs to be more open minded and optimistic about life and share compassion towards one another rather than silently or openly judging one another.

"You son-of-a-bitch." to Diana's parents driving away,
it's foreshadowing that something's going to happen, and he knows it!
So true-in the scene right after this,Rocky's at home,some time after returning from camp,and he tells his mom that "every time he calls Diana,her folks say she's not there,"(much the way in La Bamba every time Ritchie phones Diana her father tells him the same thing, or "Yes she is,but she's doing her homework,taking a nap,"etc. And of course,in the next scene,after Rocky orders Ben out following their argument,he again tries to phone Diana and even though we only hear his half of the conversation with her mom,we know very well what her mom is telling him:Rocky:"Hello,Mrs. Adams,is Diana there?"(Who's calling?) Rocky Dennis.(No,she's not.) Do you know where she is?(No,I don't.) Well,have you told her that I've called?(No,I haven't.)thus Rocky hangs up,his eyes full of tears of self-pity. But really,it's people like Diana's parents you need to feel sorry for and not Rocky-again,it wasn't his appearance that counted,it was his personality and nature-he really was such a pleasant,personable person,which they simply chose not to see by overlooking his apprarance. But that was their problem and loss,not his.
Too bad cell phones didn't exist at the time,then Rocky would have had no problem phoning Diana herself(as she probably could have had her own cell phone.)

Her parents are such (possible) hypocrites. Imagine a guy saying he wouldn't want to date their daughter because she's blind. They'd probably have a fit and go on and on about how she's beautiful and looks don't matter, etc. I know far too many parents like that.

Humans are flawed and that was a very human reaction by the parents. It was unkind but you can't hold it against them. I think Diana should have told her parents on the phone about Rocky's deformity. She knew because Rocky told her. If she told her parents earlier then they wouldn't be standing there thinking "honey you have no idea what Rocky is hiding from you".

It’s sad how shallow and judgmental the world is nowadays, but I think most of us would be lying to ourselves if we said we wouldn’t have reacted the same way Diana’s parents did upon first seeing Rocky. I myself would have been startled and perhaps had mixed feelings upon first seeing his face, but would still not disregard him as a potential friend after some time since beneath that “mask”, he has a beautiful heart and brilliant mind.
People who have already watched the movie will know that he already told her what he looks like.
But to me that's besides the point, he seems to make her happy, and in the end that's all that matters.

I can’t watch this movie without crying, it’s fricken impossible.
I have to admit... and be honest here, I would be a little freaked out about Rocky at first, but I would still be nice to him and let my daughter be with him cause he doesn't seem like a bad person. That as I get to know him more, I know I'd start to like him. But yeah, I would react with shock at first, but not ignore him like the parents did....

I learned on IMDB that this movie is actually a prequel to Jurassic Park. After her parents rejected Rocky, Diana became bitter. She changed her name to Ellie Sattler, studied botany, and found an herbal cure for her blindness. She got her degree in paleobotany. Years later, she received an invitation from theme park entrepreneur John Hammond to tour his new park.

0:45...you can see the unpleasant reactions of Diana's parents like "o my god---you are hideous....stay away from my daughter" the look of fright and apprension...her parents made sure of that by not letting Rocky speak to Diana on the phone....if there were any monsters in the film...it was Diana's parents, the ticket taker for bumper cars, and that bully Rocky slammed up against the locker!!!
