    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Visiting the cemetery where Rocky is buried, Rusty (Cher) remembers her son as Gar (Sam Elliott) and Dozer (Dennis Burkley) stand nearby.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom's boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won't have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son's rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy's kindness and compassion. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn't come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy.

There are millions of “Rockys” out there. This Rocky has passed on but go out and find another person who doesn’t have someone and be their friend. You didn’t miss an opportunity by not being Rockys friend. You can still be someones friend now.

I loved Dozer. He was like a big poppa bear to Rocky. I admit I teared up a little when he told Rocky he was proud of him for graduating high school.

I have a son who has non verbal autism. Although I couldn’t imagine what Rocky’s mom went through, I do understand having a child who’s “different”. He smile is wholesome and completely innocent. Some days it’s so overwhelming but the good days make it all worthwhile. RIP Rocky.

He was so strong. He didn't let his situation beat him down or make him feel like he wasn't worth anything. Beautiful, precious soul.

Movie is a freaking master piece, Cher's best performance in my opinion, she was incredible in the film, her raw energy in every scene she was in, you felt her strength and her pain to see her son sick like that and wishing him well and hoping and praying he would make it to the next day alive, she knew she was on borrowed time with Rocky, the ending gets me too every time.

Why do the 70s and 80s look so beautiful? The scenes of those eras in movies look so damn beautiful. The aesthetic is sublime.

To everyone saying they would’ve been Rocky’s friend: You still can, in a way. There are countless people living today with craniofacial differences, not to mention many other medical conditions that might make someone feel like an “outcast.” If you ever find yourself going to school/work/in a social group with such a person, please treat them with kindness, and see where that kindness leads. Maybe a lifelong friendship, or maybe you’ll just make their day a little easier.
