I traveled 7 weeks in Europe in the summer of 1982 with my best friend. 20 countries in total. I was 25 and he was 22. But a week after we got back his mom called and said he had died of an aortic aneurysm. It floored me... but at least he had that.
That's terrible, and I doubt any of that could have been foreseen. You both experienced it, and it was a great moment in a lifetime. I do have a question, though. To make such a trip, didn't you both have to be kind of skilled on motorcycles? And didn't it cost WAY more than $52 to get to Europe with your motorcycles, and pay for traveling and living expenses? What I'm getting at is the impossibility of this "trip" on the movie. Neither had motorcycles, or even could ride one as far as we know. And with $52 saved up, I doubt that would have covered all of the traveling and living expenses required to make that trip. Could you roughly tell us how you both had to be prepared to make it a reality? It doesn't have to be personal. Congratulations on your trip, and condolences for the loss of your friend.

We aren't totally estranged from each other but we haven't had a real conversation in about 25 years. @@derby2510 30 bucks an hour? And Ben is just a Teenager dayum.....he is set for life....Rocky shouldn't have been so mean to Ben....that could Be Ben only shot at success
Personally I always felt Ben was a false friend. Three things he did wrong which proves that he was never a true friend to Rocky. He didn't stick up for Rocky in the carnival scene, he threw Rocky under the bus saying that he was the only one that talked about the trip in a passive-aggressive and resentful way, and lastly could have come up with a way to preserve their friendship, stay in touch, help plan ways for Rocky to see him or vice versa, and lastly, they could have easily still got on the trip, but because Ben didn't put any effort into their friendship at all, he's garbage.
Instead of blaming it all on Ben, try to see it from his perspective. Ben is the scapegoat here for a dream that was an impossibility. To get to Europe? 5 digits at least. Who amongst them has that kind of money? And how about the motorcycles, where are they? I don't believe either one has a motorcycle license in the U.S. - let alone Europe. No way this dream would have ever happened. The way it was. Ben had to get on with his life, and he tried to be as human as possible. Rocky was a out of line there.
This scenes hit me hard cause I suffered from mental health issues as a kid and my teen years and seeing this reminds me how heartbreaking when best friends can't keep promises and stay loyal and they just walk away for no reason
In high school my best friend and I were together nonstop she picked me up in the mornings, we went to lunch, we had chorus together, she drove me home after school, well mostly I went to her house. Of course we hung out most evenings. Then she graduated and we lost touch I was so depressed.
This scene reminds me of a control freak friend I used to have that desperately wanted me to go to a theme park with him, I would ask him to give me the date and I'll request timeoff from work, he refused to give me the date and wants me to just get someone to cover for me, I flat out refused because I don't like calling in that I can't make it more than I have to, then I told him that I don't want to go to a theme park with him because I'm tired of him playing games with me, he unfortunately took it the wrong way and felt like I wasn't being a good friend for him, I didn't understand why he was so desperate for me to go to a theme park with him a couple other friends (who I've never met). Once I found a better friend I completely stopped hanging out with him, the other friend helped me get my self confidence back.
EXACTLY!! People are all calling Ben a "bad friend" when Rocky was the one being a control freak. So Ben couldn't go - on this impossible trip. Rocky could have made other plans but proceeded to insult him. Not a friend at all. I too had a manipulative friend. I had a Friday night off and wanted to go to a football game with my Dad and Brother to watch my youngest Brother play football. My manipulative "friend" wanted me to go hang out with them. I explained that I had plans and he went on an immature tirade tantrum much like Rocky's. I went to the game anyway, and glad I did. My Brother was tragically killed in an accident a year later. When the times came in the future from there to hang out with my "friend", I refused and continued to do so until it was understood that our "friendship" was over. Good riddance.
This really broke Rocky like things may break us, and he gave up on everything, including living.. Rocky had a lot of tough people around him plus the unconditional love from his mom and he looked over that and the fact that he was sick. When you have God ahead of your life things don't won't hurt as bad because he will show you one time that he will turn things around and he understands when we feel down and out but it doesn't please him when we stay down because he is the Truth and keeps his promises.. This was a really Good movie and if you have recently went through this cheer up things will get better Mask..God bless you Cher❤
True. He took a lot of undeserved crap here. That ride was an impossibility, and Ben had to get on with his life. He was as human as possible given the situation.
Yes, everyone says what a "bad friend" Ben was, but if you look at it objectively it was Rocky who was the horrible "friend". Ben couldn't go? Make other plans and wish him the best instead of going on that tirade tantrum. Not cool. If it's even true that Ben's "betrayal" was what led to Rocky's death, then he should be thanked for hanging around so Rocky could finish his senior year. That was too control freak and clingy of Rocky, and he was not a real friend.
Funnily enough that same actor who played Ben did a movie 3 years before this one where he was madly in love with a woman until he saw her kissing another guy which really really broke his heart and he was tearing up profusely till the movie ended
That was all Rocky's doing. Ben had to get on with his life, and was unable to carry on with that impossible trip. That's just life. Rocky could have been more understanding, and wished him the best. But instead of that he goes on that tirade tantrum revealing what a control freak he was. So Rocky was a horrible "friend".
I disagree.aybe Ben or Rocky's Mom didn't really take it seriously but Rocky did. Life expectancy is an estimation and that kid fought damn hard to live, even through the pain and loss of sleep! He was beautiful to everyone and brought beauty to the earth while he was alive. He deserved it being a reality as well as the respect anyone else would have and have received. I can relate to this scene many times in lifebin regards to people's word meaning absolutely nothing but a waste of valuable time as well as manipulation. When you say something you should intend to follow through exactly as you said you would, period. No one is guaranteed life tomorrow and we all have a life expectancy. Life is to short to invest energy and loyalty on folks that don't even intend to follow through on their word from the get go. On my opinion this is one of the greatest deficiencies in the world today and from actual experience of observation has forced folks to not trust in others. Also to be more solitary.
I was thinking of something else when rocky passed on I don’t think Ben ever came back to his funeral what a horrible friend Ben is could have worked it out with his mom and save his friendship with rocky he didn’t deserve this he was sick and could have passed away at anytime.

I would imagine he was hurt.
Why should he feel like shit? He didn't kill him. Ben had his own problems, and had to go on with his life. Rocky could have wished him the best, but instead of that he goes of on a tirade tantrum and insulted Ben. Rocky showed he was a manipulative control freak, and Rocky was the one who was not a true friend.
If it's true that Ben staying around was a matter of life and death, then he should be thanked for hanging around an extra year so Rocky could graduate.
One of the most amazing films ever made, if you have not seen it I strongly suggest doing so - RIP Rocky. ❤️
I love this movie
@80's guy agreed
I've been addicted to it ever since I've seen it
Wait did he die in the movie? Bc if so then u jus spoiled it
@@clarkyboii6333 Yes
Him moving away doesn't mean they can't go on a trip one day.
Tickle my Pickle They cant go on a trip because rocky dies in like a month from then.
@@wangotango5447, Rocky died because his heart was broken. First with the girl and then with Ben leaving. If you notice before all that happens he seemed healthy even despite his ailments. That is because he had things to look forward to and it kept him going. After everything with the girl and Ben you can see he looked much sicker. And he died after that. So it was kinda like he felt he had nothing else to look forward to and he was hurt by how he was treated by that girl's family and the World in general and his body gave out. Chance are that if the trip had still been on then he would have probably lived a little longer.
@@blaqwhole4998 It is sort of like what mickey said to rocky balboa about your body dying when it no longer has nothing to live for.
@@miyagikai617 this is true no matter what your condition
@@wangotango5447 I know that. I meant at the time when he was alive and he saying they won't ever go.
I'm wondering if all these stresses killed him quicker or any possibility he could've made it 🤔
It did!💔
He died of heartbreak😢
I wouldn't say Ben is stupid, he's selfish, then again aren't we all? At the end of the day Ben had his own goals in life, and going to Europe wasn't one of them. You can tell he hated to disappoint Rocky and knew he would be upset with him, and he tried his best to reason with him. Rocky had every reason to be upset, but overreacted and failed to see Ben's point of view.
The look on Rusty's (Rocky's mother) face is her basically saying, "Yeah, Ben. It's best you just leave. You got what you wanted."
my dad had a "best friend" who he was gonna join the marines with ... dad went .. washed out within a couple weeks .. friend never even bothered too show up to the recruiter .. i think hearing stories like that made me never wanna plan shit with friends ..
It is also a great point made in the fact that when your young, your friendships aren't really real! Your going through so many changes, that you just want company to fit in with someone it's not real.its to bad really because when you get older,"That is when you learn, that most people, really only care about themselves"
It's not really either ones fault. Maybe Ben should have gotten the word out sooner though.
Yes, it obviously was very difficult for him.
From how he tells it, it sounds like it just happened m
He said he had been thinking about it for a while, but sounds like he needed to be sure. He was at least a man enough to appear in person. He could have just left him a note, or nothing at all. I believe Rocky was being a control freak jerk. He could have just told Ben that he was sorry he couldn't make it, and wished him the best. But instead of that he goes on this tirade tantrum and insulting Ben. Not cool at all. So in truth, Rocky was the one who wasn't a true friend.
I'm 52 and SILL waiting on my "best friend " to go backpacking around Europe from the UK ... working in vineyards etc. For bed and Food and maybe even some to put aside for "essentials" I have lost the exact itinerary for I got sick of carrying it around...just like the illusion it might happen.....
Not to mention when the blind girls( a beautiful young Laura Dern) parents brushed him off,I believe that crushed him too.
Yes, definitely.
Seems like the parents were unfair. But what would you do? I don't think I'd like rocky around my daughter either.

I’m about to move to Michigan, but we’re gonna make the trip as well...
I'm sure ben could've came and visited once in a while.
true he may mention that or aaky Rocky come vist him sometimes but rocky blew up at him
i think Ben was Shocked how Rocky responded to the new his eyes like saying why you doing this. i mean ben apologized when rocky told him he talk ed trip too. thennon way out look at rocky as say i am sorry
Thats Karma on Rocky for conning Ben for Rube Walker ..
That damned Ben!
Really? He explained that he was having difficulty staying where he was, but now had the opportunity to live with his Father and make money. Rocky could have shown some consideration for Ben's well being, but instead of that he goes on this tirade tantrum deeply insulting Ben. That impossible trip was pie in the sky anyway. Rocky could have made adjustments and other plans. This scene reveals what a manipulative and clingy control freak Rocky really was, and that Rocky was a selfish "friend".
If Ben going away was what really caused Rocky's death, than he should be thanked for hanging around so Rocky could finish his senior year.

I get how Rocky felt, he was a little rough with the words, but sure understand how he felt. Being called dumb or stupid isn't fun, but being call can sometimes help you to get smarter.
Not only this but shortly after he tries to call the girlfriend AGAIN and can't get through.. so goes to see her only to break up or to find out she's moving away for her career. just sad. to say life's unfair is the biggest understatement I've ever heard of. It can be so cruel!

I'm familiar with both movies I was born in the mid-80s
And Friday the 13th part 4 the final chapter
I don't know when he looks sadder, the end if this scene or LAV.. it's a tie!
Boy can I relate. Had a friend who pulled the same crap on a trip we planned after graduating college. You can imagine how I felt. We aren't totally estranged from each other but we haven't had a real conversation in about 25 years. It taught me something of a lesson though and as a result the only trips I've taken with people who aren't immediate family members are relatively short, uncomplicated two or three-night jaunts a few hours' drive away.
Was your reaction similar to Rocky's?
@@Guamparrapo83 Well, kind of. I was really pissed off, especially since he proposed the trip in the first place. I didn't call him stupid though.

Yes that was another good movie
Always felt so sorry for Ben. He really loved Rocky
@@Terminatorfan-2016 rocky was also mean to him back he conned him out of a rube walker
@@Terminatorfan-2016yea I agree and I also understand Ben not being happy needed to move but could of still went on trip
Cher did so little in this scene, and yet, she was perfect
This scenes hit me hard cause I suffered from mental health issues as a kid and my teen years and seeing this reminds me how heartbreaking when best friends can't keep promises and stay loyal and they just walk away for no reason
this was one a good movie
In high school my best friend and I were together nonstop she picked me up in the mornings, we went to lunch, we had chorus together, she drove me home after school, well mostly I went to her house. Of course we hung out most evenings. Then she graduated and we lost touch I was so depressed.
Watching things like this makes me feel so guilty for feeling sorry for myself. There’s always someone dealt a worse hand than you.
It’s such a sad movie it almost makes me cry
it's a great movie but I always feel like garbage after watching it
Ben imagined all the pretty girls in Europe running away.
Yep
10-4
I'm a loner, have been all my life. I cannot stand having people try to rule my life.
Lmfaooo
Love how RUclips just randomly shows me a movie I forgot about lol
This really broke Rocky like things may break us, and he gave up on everything, including living.. Rocky had a lot of tough people around him plus the unconditional love from his mom and he looked over that and the fact that he was sick.
When you have God ahead of your life things don't won't hurt as bad because he will show you one time that he will turn things around and he understands when we feel down and out but it doesn't please him when we stay down because he is the Truth and keeps his promises..
This was a really Good movie and if you have recently went through this cheer up things will get better

I felt so sorry for Ben here.
he was the last american virgin

He talks like Michael Jackson a bit.
I never realized that.
I literally was thinking that.
Omg is true
