The octopus of drumming the way he plays his solos it always looks like his two hands on the high hat and snare and 6 more arms come out of his back and play the rest of his drum kit . A true legend

He is the father of modern jazz, that is understatement because failed jazz drummers usually become rock bands.

This is the first time I have seen Buddy play in a "funky groove". There have been people in my past tell me "Yeah Buddy Rich is a great jazz drummer but he can't play funk". Now I know that is a falsehood.

    I don't hear any funk!
Buddy was a phenomenal drummer, but funk was not a part of his repertoire. I've listened to him play chameleon by Herbie Hancock. And it had no feel to it whatsoever. But he was great at what he did in terms of playing big band jazz. However, there were other drummers who were more versatile than him and definitely had more feel for playing other genres of music

I just listened to Chameleon. He had plenty of feel. His absorption of funk was remarkable. This was a big band arrangement with a lot of brass, not a small group with bass and guitar where he could lay down more punctuated stuff. Listen to what he plays during the Fender Rhodes solo on that track. He knows exactly what funk is. He plays the Cobham "1 &" funk beat better than Cobham does.

Great drummer no doubt, but somehow he always failed to move me , I have listened to him for over sixty years and.always found him much to frantic and dare I say it predictable, I have listened to the slobbering hero worship over the years , ie the best drummer ever , or best that ever will be , such hero worship did.not sit to well with Buddy himself , he did not share those views , not through false modesty but genuine knowledge of players past and present many of whom he knew well and indeed took inspiration from , he was.a very great player but , no one can be truly the best ever ,past and future , everyone has their own idea of what they like , mine ,it seems is.at odds.with the many Buddy freaks , most.of whom I.might add never saw.him play but persist in repeating the popular myth.

Every one is entitled to their opinions I most assuredly listened to what you said? Sorry Sorry Sorry I disagree with you one hundred per cent. Buddy Rich was and still is the GREATEST HUMAN to ever play a set of drums period. If he did not move you? Thats not something I can understand you saying?????? Buddy Rich did more outstanding drumming ever ever than any other drummer. Krupa said this and this still makes complete sense. Buddy Rich Greatest Drummer to draw breath. Gene was right Louie was Right and so was multitude of drummers that feel the same way. Buddy Rich the Legend. Enough said.

@@rayszymarek2920 many thanks for your reply and opinions which like my own are personal and not set in concrete, I do not wish to cause any offence but your reply highlighted exactly what I implied about over the top emotional views , you are.a.fan of.B R., as am I , but there our paths diverge , it is both obsessive and unrealistic to ascribe to any person musician or otherwise the blanket title of greatest , past., present or future .by the way did you have the good fortune to see and hear him play ?I did , on several occasions and can vouch for his brilliance but I would stop at.the sort of obsessive hero worship that yourself and others, indulge in , he was great , but of his time and type and that I believe is a fitting tribute and one I think B R .would agree with , he did not have an over inflated opinion of his own talent , he was believe it or not a modest individual.

@@karlmylnere5712 Buddy was Joe Morellos biggest fan. And I have to say I really do like Joes style more so than Buddys. I also like Gene better than Buddy. This said, all these guys said Buddy was on another level. Who are we to argue and more importantly why should we!! I'm just glad they are there for us. Peace man 😊

I agree he kinda overdoes everything and it feels like he’s always rushing slightly. I’ve never seen him just hold one groove and play within the pocket before.

@@kingdavidike-elechi9707 He is very unique. It's true, what is the greatest? We have no occular proof of people in the past before camera's and it's all subjective. Buddy was set in his way but here is the thing. If you gave him enough time, he could probably master most if not all styles of music on the drums. He was that naturally gifted. I agree in wanting to hear one grooves and be in the pocket. But this song shows to me he could do it quite easily . ruclips.net/video/HcuKdzs1zc8/видео.html
