You especially have to appreciate the dynamic changes throughout that entire roll... So smooth... . And in his late sixties AND ..not even winded ... I had the pleasure to see him play about 18 times
It's fab mate. A very rare mess up at the end, some uncertainty from a couple of musos, early entries from I think a bone and horn and some just didn't come in, so the chord wasnt there, hence Buddys: "What happened?" He would have been spewing afterwards...it happens.. I spent 15 years as a pro clarinettist and sax player..my old boss would go nuts if there were any screw ups..fair enough, we were pros..screw up in rehearsal man.. My fav is Ronnie's Scott's 1980. I think the slap bass edges it for me. .Steve Marcus, man he was so so good... Oh, that funny bloke on the drums wasn’t too shabby as well.
@@SiFiClark You seem to know your music pretty well. I noticed the mess up at the end too. And the slap bass on the Ronnie Scott’s version is also well noted.
Doesn't matter which drummer you listen to, nobody can entice you in like Buddy, absolutely out of this world band and undoubtedly the greatest drummer of all time.

I’ve been searching for this song (and this concert) for years! Thank you so much for uploading!!! An amazing and clear performance with superb solos and the master himself giving it all he’s got! Awesome!
Buddy Rich is a great drummer and the band follows him. Sonny Payne is a great drummer, and he compliments the band. Buddy, in this regard, is like Gene Krupa, who was a great innovator. Perhaps Joe Morrello is the greatest drummer for a small cool jazz ensemble? Is Elvin Jones the greatest drummer in the Afro-Jazz movement? I get nervous when people like Andrew make absolutist statements about the greatest.
I get nervous when people can't answer a simple question without equivocating: Buddy was the best, period. You're afraid of making a choice. It's people like you who have taken the USA to new lows. Afraid to take a stand.

I think you are right. I've been wondering for years what he said at that point. Any idea why he calls out to Steve Marcus beginning at 9:16? He yells "Steve!" twice and then says something once Steve turns around.
@@rodbartd I did hear him say both of those statements at seperate times during the chart's performance. Why he said what was said I am unaware as to why.
Yeah, Buddy was such a perfectionist and like all great bandleaders could 'hear' in his mind what perfection was supposed to sound like, he could get pissed off easily. This performance sounds terrific to me, but one never knows if he chewed out the guys later. He was kind of a hot head that way, as you can hear on the infamous bus tapes!
Did I hear that Steve Marcus wrote this tune? Buddy mentioned something along those lines on a British TV program, but the name was muffled....any thoughts? it has a haunting melody. and did Steve work his butt off in his solo!!
When I was on the band, Buddy asked Bob Mintzer to write a new "suite" along the lines of "Channel One" and "West Side Story", so we'd have a third choice as a closer. "Good News" is what Bob came up with. Bob brought his own drummer to a rehearsal, we played the arrangement once with his drummer reading the chart while Buddy listened, then Buddy sat down on the drums with no chart & we played it again. The next time we played it was at a gig.

This is in my humble opinion the
best live performance of this chart. Just love Steve Marcus' solo and Chris Pasin and Dave Stahl's trumpet work.

Steve Marcus in strong form.
Awesome to listen to .. also he was quite a character as well on Johnny Carson
Simply put: there are many great drummers out there, and then there is Buddy.
And Saint Peter said, no, that's God playing...He only thinks he's Buddy Rich.
And that's why he was the king ..
A rare shot underneath his ride cymbal, showing how much tape he had on it! 😲
nice playing. I like it. Very good...
Trumpets- Chris Pasin (solo), Dave Stahl(lead).... Steve Marcus Tenor sax (solo); Andy Fusco Lead alto sax.(solo)
Pasin and Stahl really cook on the first part of the chart, and Steve Marcus and Fusco just take the cake for superb soloing on saxes.

Fantastic
So, Buddy sits down and listens to this new chart once, maybe twice and then gets up and pretty much plays it down like he owns it? Wow.
I believe there's a full version of this concert with Lee Musiker doing Summertime solo piano
Awesome
Awesomeness!

Control! Buddy's tight roll on closing solo - could've continued two more hours.
