Extremely Dirty Air Canada 777-300ER Post-Rainstorm Takeoff from Frankfurt Am Main!

  • As we boarded the aircraft we started hearing rain trickling down the ceiling of the cabin and as I arrived at my seat it started pouring. The luggage handlers who were busy loading the luggage were forced to wait until the rain stopped about 30 minutes later. If you skip to 21:33 you will see a clip I recorded of the rain pouring down the window with my digital camera. What made me even luckier was that by the time we pushed back, the rain on the window had basically dried and didn't obscure the view! So please sit back and enjoy watching this dirty AC 77W pushback, taxi, takeoff and climb from a shiny Frankfurt Airport :D
    DISCLAIMER
    Even though the outside of the aircraft was dirty, the inside was very clean and pleasant. I had a great flight with Air Canada as always.

    Fantastic as usual! People might talk of the 747-8i vs A380, but the 777-300ER is the real King for me! AC needs to give this beast a bath!

    Keeping an aircraft clean is considered routine maintenance. Buildup of dirt and grime entraps moisture leading to corrosion. Not only that but it needs to be clean for routine inspections and maintenance. In extreme cases it can change the way airflows over critical flight surfaces. People saying the interior cleanliness is the only thing that matters has it the other way around.

      Thank you Kyle. Sounds like you might be an aircraft mechanic. I'd like to see that trailing edge washed, just to see if there it is a small leak, or a big one. If the trailing edge looks like this after one flight across the pond, there is a problem which needs to be addressed. Those who don't work on this side of the house, don't understand why it is necessary to keep things cleaner.

    Another fine video there. Can't go wrong with the characteristic two-stage startup of the GE 90-115Bs. This video also reminds me of my last trip via Frankfurt am Main airport, I saw the ANA 787-8 and an AC 77W.
    Also quite likely the slowest entrance onto an active runway by a pilot!
    And I counted four 747-8Is in the video-three during the takeoff roll, one during the immediate climbout (on one of the west remote stands).

    I was on that same plane December 26th 2013... about 4 months ago as well. I noticed the dirty wings too.... I attributed it to all the de-iceing they where doing...that's when they had that huge ice storm back east. That was the first time I flew on a 777... it is now my favourite plane ...fast, and roomy. :) The interior was spotless....

      @arj-pn8fk 3 года назад +2

      Not entirely sure if this is right, but I read somewhere that the flaperon is allowed to move freely up till 80 knots, I imagine that there is no hydraulic pressure through the actuator, likely to prioritise other systems. Maybe it's just the airflow under the wing that causes it to move as the plane speeds up, until the aircraft reaches 80 knots and it retains the same positions as the inboard and outboard flaps?

      When sitting in front of the wing generally the only noise you get is during takeoff and climb. For me, It's fun to sit there occasionally. I prefer sitting on the back half of the wing because you get better engine startup sound and you get to hear all the hydraulic noises and the flaps.

    LOL going off what the plane wing looks like and if I didn't know better, I'd guess the plane takes off and lands regularly on dirt roads and such :) Also the engine start up sounds that sound a bit ghetto and probably reverberated in your body further adds to the character the wing appearance created.

    Holy crap, that bird takes like 50kg of dirt with it. LOL

  • @Hopeless_and_Forlorn
    @Hopeless_and_Forlorn 8 лет назад

    Most of the dirt seen on the wing flaps in this video is there because dirt adheres to oily surfaces. There are a lot of hydraulic actuators and associated plumbing under the spoilers and speed brakes forward of the flaps. Tiny leaks of hydraulic fluid mix with lubricants on the mechanisms, dirt and tire particles, and spread over components behind, particularly the flaps. All in all a clean airplane is preferable to a dirty one, but in fact the dirt in the places seen here has negligible effect on aircraft performance. It is a different story if you are talking about the leading edges of the wings, stabilizers, engine inlets, and so forth. Any roughness or ice on those surfaces can cause added drag and undesirable changes to wing flight and stall characteristics. Airliners are workhorses and washes are expensive, but this airplane could certainly stand a good scrubbing, although it is undoubtedly perfectly safe to fly.

  • @320ifly
    @320ifly 4 года назад

    The 777 has a huge wing. I guess that explains the range these things have.

  • @Euzifyy
    @Euzifyy 10 лет назад +1

    The wing isn't dirty, the aircraft is coated in paint covering metal, which reacts with friction an can be eroded by rain. Even a little dirt build up could have a big impact on the drag and aerodynamics of the aircraft. It could even impact lift produced by the wings and tail section, same with ice and snow build up.

    • @philopfries6432
      @philopfries6432 11 лет назад

      The square part you are seeing is a mix of a flap and aileron, it is called a flaperon

    • @SimNico
      @SimNico 11 лет назад

      Technically it's the main aileron - the other (outer) aileron is not used at high speed to reduce the load on the wing's structure.

    Can somebody who really knows, explain to me why the middle flap is moving so much during takeoff? Haven't seen such big changes in middle flap in other videos

    • @FGCounter1
      @FGCounter1 9 лет назад +3

      Actually that's a flaperon or in other words an aileron which functions as a flap as well. They are free to move anytime as compared to the flaps and in this case, it constantly moves up and down to provide the aircraft with more lift whenever required. So that's why you see it drop when the aircraft rotates and climbs to provide maximum lift alongside the flaps. This is a very innovative technology as it doesn't need to always move alongside the flap as there will be more drag induced but it can cleverly move to provide lift whenever required. Hope this answers your question.

    who cares if the plane's wings are dirty, what matters the most is that the plane is clean inside, thats it.....

      Yeah the dirtiest wing I ever have seen is on an old 757. The whole flap pice had a yellow stain on it.
