His special “Inside” shows Bo’s slow descent into madness over the course of a year of total isolation. It’s fascinating and terrifying in equal measure.
it shows a characters descent into madness. Bo himself was chilling inside his mansion at the end of the day of shooting you muppet. People take this shit way too serious.
He wasn't in full isolation... it was still a movie, an amazing one, but still you gotta realize it was an art expression
He gave up stand up comedy due to anxiety. Then he pulled himself back up and planned a new tour.
And Covid hit.
This music comes from that place.
@@simset5875 he was in near full isolation for 3 years before having also taken a hiatus 5 years before for mental health issues, then he got the special signed january 20 2020 just as the pandemic hit, causing it to be another year in near full isolation making the special in his house
You gotta realize that he has a wive and had her also during that time. He wasn't alone during making of the special. But the character he depicts, was. He's showing someone who was locked in his room, and also in his head for a long time. It's not necessarily Bo himself, there are a lot of these people out there. He's just playing a role.

I would HIGHLY recommend these 3 if he had to choose only 3 songs, but I personally recommend you start with his early stuff then progress with him. He details a lot of his mental struggles and you can almost go on the journey with him

I feel like the line “Apathy is a tragedy and boredom is a crime” is a line that gets skipped a lot by these reaction channels and it is just a powerful line. It describes the internet perfectly and how society as a whole approaches internet/media/technology. We are only interested in a thing as long as is trending and its talked about. As soon as it stops being mentioned, it’s boring and we don’t care for it anymore.
I watched Knox Hill react to this and he went into depth about that line among others but yes, most reaction channels totally overlook it.
The worst was one reaction where I saw the reactor agree with the line, thinking that it was sincere, not from the perspective of the internet.
To me, it describes how if you're on the Internet , you HAVE to take a stand on this cause or that to the point of blind devotion or fanaticism, and it reinforces the "us v. them" mentality. Like, "If you don't agree 100% with US, you're one of THEM!" And this isn't a left or right thing, VERYONE does it, and the Internet enables that.
How I see it is:
If you’re apathetic about something, you don’t care about it, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You can’t care about everything in life, otherwise you’ll go insane. But if you’re apathetic about an issue someone cares about it (which is going to be literally every issue in existence) it’ll be seen as a tragedy that you can’t bring yourself to care or you don’t care about something that someone else does.
Boredom is not a bad thing. It’s usually an indication that something has to change in your life. It gives you the opportunity to reflect to make to appropriate decisions and take necessary steps to better yourself. But if you constantly distract yourself to avoid boredom, you push all that aside and become complacent. Nothing will change for you.
I interpreted it as the personification of the internet. "Apathy is a tragedy" means that the internet doesn't like when you don't care about what it has to offer you, and "boredom is a crime" means the internet doesn't like when you get bored of it.
A thing I think Bo says in "Welcome to the internet", that I love is the phrase "It did all the things we designed it to do" because a lot of the times people look down on the younger generarions bc they're so addicted to all these devices but at the end of the day the previous generations are not only the ones that designed them but also the ones enabling the young kids to use that stuff. It feels so hypocritical when they look down on them :/
that's the thing I love most about this song. he doesn't go into this usual trap of "oh these youth exploiting and corrupting the internet and each other". like, no. the internet's goal was always to reach and communicate with as many people and things as possible. in our effort to overcome the boundaries of living in small bubbles and the struggle to communicate with a wide array of people, we created a new type of vice that is as vile as it is revolutionary. now we have to put in conscious effort to not be fully engaged in something (even if it's not the internet) 100% of the time. we have a mental health epidemic on our hands because now we have to train ourselves how to slow ourselves down. the culture that we live in also breeds this need for constant engagement.
Reminds me of a bit from another comedian (can't remember) talking about how adult generations love to make fun of the soft youth and all their "participation trophies" and "loser prizes"... as if the kids, and not the adults, were the ones behind all that.
in one interview he's having a sort of upset rant, and he sais, "well look at what you turned the world into, of course they bury their head in the sand"
So true, you always hear about the focus being on "audience engagement", but then act surprised when that constant push for more content and more user interaction results in younger users being totally engaged all the time with the content and features.
It's a really great commentary on today's internet, it's a fantastic way of sharing creativity and information but it also enables the worst part of ourselves at the same time.
Then again, most people from that time didn't exactly support it at first. The only people who really supported it were the people who created it. It was after it got made public that people started getting addicted to it. I suppose you could call it an infection, with some people being infected completely, and some others partially (hence the bit of toxicity), and some who weren't infected at all (hence the complete disapproval from some people. Though the most addicted people are the current generation, there are quite a bit of people who approve of it from the older generation as well.
Another point could be that the older generation isn't used to the things we listen to/watch, and so they don't approve of it. Which I'm not saying is our fault, or anyone else's, I suppose it's just an "evolution along with the times".

Left Brain Right Brain (a literal argument about Bo’s 2 sides of his brain, incredibly creative and therapeutically fun to analyze)
Lower Your Expectations (a song about unrealistic love standards)
Art Is Dead (an eviscerating self critique and his struggle with the importance of art in general)
We Think We Know You (a response to I requested feedback and hate from others)
That Funny Feeling (existential dread)
All Eyes On Me (better if watched in context of the special because based on why came before the meaning could be 1,000 different things)

Yep, that sums up "That Funny Feeling" pretty damn well. More like "casual existential dread" but pretty existencially dreadful nonetheless.
hopefully he doesn't miss all the clear flags even a 10 year old would pick up on. should take out the expectation of psychoanalysing which he isn't doing whatsoever.
OMG! I so hope he sticks with reacting to Bo. This might not be the best 'starter' song, but damn I sure hope he continues to explore this -- Art Is Dead - Left Brain Right Brain - We Think We Know You - Can't Handle This - All Eyes On Me -- In this order, would be ideal. This order will 100% help paint a story from the progression of his mental state imo

In other words, you’re not allowed to not have an opinion or feeling about any given subject, and you’re not allowed to not be perpetually engaged with the infinite sources of engagement.
I love that the song is portrayed as if the internet is a villainous Carnival Barker, trying to draw you in and sell you on the mysteries and oddities behind the curtain, which were often falsehoods, deceptions, and tricks that were created for the sake of profiting off of people’s curiosity.

That's not at all what apathy is tragedy means, imo. It means the inverse, really... You aren't allowed to not care or hold off on forming an opinion until you have more information. Snap reactions or get left behind.

I know this is 2 years later but this is terrifying. The field is called consumer neuroscience.
What I REALLY like about this song is that it perfectly shows that dopamine rush you get on the internet at the end, like you were talking about, with all the sound effects and amped-up music, only to end it so abruptly you feel disappointed. Like what the internet does to you once you get off of it.
Bo burnham has a song called K*ll Yourself which is actually a lyrical masterpiece even if it’s very serious sometimes. Amazingly made
His best wordplay songs in my opinion are New Math, which is really good, but the absolute best is Words Words Words. It's basically him flexing how clever he is
Bo Burnham got internet famous very young and has felt intense pressure, resulting in a mental breakdown. He stopped performing for 5 years before he made Inside. ALL BY HIMSELF BTW. Inside was done entirely by him and only him. It was nominated for 6 Emmys and won 3. The man is a damaged genius.
Yeah, there are several speed bumps in this song that he just blows right through without hesitation, which really REALLY fits with the internet. The insidious and uncaring nature of it also shines through as the song goes by.

This entire special "Inside" that this comes from is utter genius.
He talks about the anxiety you mentioned. He was having panic attacks on stage, and stopped performing live for several years. And it has informed his content in the most meaningful way.
He quit stand-up for 6 years or so now.

The song "How the World Works", from this special you're watching, involves a sock puppet and political theory. It's my favorite by far, because it is a rare example of a commercially successful piece of entertainment that is outwardly critical of global capitalism. I'm surprised it was allowed on a big corporate media streaming service like Netflix.
"it's like he's going deep" lolllllll my man, Bo is a genius in every sense of the word. Start with his old material and watch chronologically!! age 16ish-30ish, to see the progression of his work-and progression as a human growing up under the spotlight of youtube in its earliest days mixed with honesty surrounding his mental health-is pretty incredible.

I feel a bit late to the party, but I remember reading that part of what was really afflicting Bo, in his own words, was that he'd started to come around to beating his anxiety, or at least getting better at managing it, just before Covid hit. Can you imagine that? Really. To be starting to come out of your shell and feeling like you can be your own person, and then something so horrible of that magnitude stuffs you right back where you were, and the only safe thing to do is to... Isolate yourself.
Yay!!!! Getting to watch someone witness Bo for the first time is just…the fucking best. And also watching someone who seems to really “get it” is a breath of fresh air.
He’s about as close to an auteur as it gets and on a whole other level in terms of self awareness and societal commentary.
He’s always been very open about his struggles with mental health. If you want to start down that specific rabbit hole (yes there are multiple rabbit holes with Bo) I recommend reacting to these songs. They’re listed in chronological order but don’t have to be viewed as such:

Also, completely unrelated…but another artist with Surprisingly deep lyrics is Rammstein. They’re an industrial German band and the Vocalists is an incredible poet/vocalist. A couple songs that are well worth looking into are Deutschland and the piano version of Mien Herz Brennt.

I urge you to watch Inside, in full, before reacting to the indivual songs. It is a deep dive into the Covid isolation, commercialization of damn near everything, and a look at someone who is, at the moment, not OK. The special builds slowly over the year and while each song can stand alone, watching the full production just hits in a completely different way.
If you watch the movie it puts all these songs in a different perspective. It’s truly heartbreaking but brilliant. A must watch! Give’s me a TØP feel.

The entire INSIDE special on Netflix is a masterpiece. The Inside Outtakes on RUclips is almost as golden. He talks about his mental state. He acknowledges his problematic past which is indelibly inked on the internet. Old videos when he was starting out just trying to be funny he would take down if he could. It's chilling, but to me the brilliance of it makes it very positive!
I finally watched Bo Burnham inside and it was a great.
I was not wowed by the outtakes, I actually thought most of it deservedly was cut.
I heard someone say something a long time ago that has stuck with me, and it’s in the back of my head anytime subjects like this come up - For the first time in the history of our species, ideas can travel farther, faster, than bullets and army’s.
I don’t bring this up as a counter to anything Bo said in Inside, or your reaction for that matter. I’m just saying, it can be an interesting thing to consider

The entire Inside show that Welcome To The Internet is from is a therapist field day. He goes deep and gets darkly honest.

2. I definetly agree with you on the absurdity of how much technology has taken over. I’m GenZ, born in the year 2000, and it’s so strange seeing how large a jump it has made even from 2000 to 2010 and now further to 2020.
Like I and all of my peers didn’t get our first phones until we were at least 10 (not smartphone, just a phone, just for calling, you’re lucky if it had any other feature)(my first one was a Sony Ericsson W200i which I got from my mother after she got her new Nokia, it’s nothing compared to the iPhone I have now, but it served me well, and I kinda miss its simplicity/limitations), got my first smartphone and pc (the only computers we had in the house was my parents work ones) at 13.
And now, there’s kids that are born and seemingly get a tablet shoved in their face as soon as possible and it’s utterly tragic, like yes times change and you at this point can’t shut that off completely, our society doesn’t allow that, but there’s way to limit it, and hopefully as long as possible.

Bo Burnham has some really, REALLY "afterthought" songs. They have some insanely deep meaning. "All Eyes On Me", "Can't Handle This" and "Art is Dead" is 3 really, really good ones.
"Left Brain, Right Brain" is also pretty good. "We Think We Know You" aswell, first time I saw it I got goosebumps through my entire body.
This is a small portion of a larger picture for sure. You MUST watch all of inside to get the depth of brilliance Bo has. It's truly masterful.

11:10 I’ve seen it with my niece. Even had to dive across the couch to stop a video she was starting because I recognized it as the music of Minus8’s Ankha video. Apparently RUclips Kids thought it was for kids since it was animated. Its like when they thought Happy Tree Friends was for kids.
This song is so perfect, not only is it an amazing statement on the toxic relationship we have with the internet, It's cinematically fantastic. The use of scale, color and tempo. The camera stays zoomed out as the pace stays semi constant, you can hear Bo breathing between the sentences as he's not getting too crazy.
Then it zooms in, you start getting almost Clastrophobically close as Bo keeps moving along, Not even taking a moment to breathe. It's almost overbearingly close, the words keep coming and the camera keeps moving in. It starts moving around fast, not disorienting but neither is it helping you keep track of where you are.
Then everything stops, no movement or noise. Bo takes a breath, the camera cuts back out to a wide shot. He starts up the chorus calmly like none of that just happened, not slowing down but not getting back in your face again.
Bo is an absolute GENIUS. This song is funny, but so real and absolutely terrifying at the same time. I love that man.
I'd recommend for the deep really intrespective: Are you happy, Can't handle this (Kanye rant), All eyes on me and That funny feeling.
All his stuff is thought provoking though some of it is also just silly and fun especially some of the early stuff but even then he had a way of making you pause and think. I just subscribed and I am here for this journey ❤️
Yeah he left in 2015 because he was having panic attacks on stage. In the song, "All Eyes on Me," he addresses it. I am happy he is doing what he thinks is best for him mentally.

This whole show is a masterpiece, but the song 'Funny Feeling' is especially poignant. It invokes this slow feeling of inescapable dread when I listen to it.

Hearing you break down the message early in the song while knowing what was coming up (even down to the exact age he mentions) was truly something special. Liked and subscribed!
I love how when he started talking about how the internet used to be the tone of the song slowed down just like our lives do when we get of the internet. Then the Disney villain ahh laugh could be a metaphor for how even though the internet was created to be a good thing it got out of control and it's pristine internations where dragged across the mud. Then when he did get on the internet once again the song sped up and became even more crazy.

he literally takes the "snake oil scammer" persona in this song , musically and in his acting, so accurate.
It's very interesting to see how differently people react to this song and it's message. He says "Can I interest you in everything, all of the time?", and my neurodivergent brain goes "ohoHO- Absolutely you can!"
I very much agree that there are issues with how some people interact with the internet (especially children), but for me, personally, the internet - or more specifically, the access to content - is honestly one of the greatest thing in my life.
I like being around people, but it's incredibly draining and often stressful, so I require a lot of alone time. In that alone time, I still need stimulation. Without the internet, the options for stimulation are pretty limited without going out into society, and if I can't get my brain to accept one of those options, the need to find something interesting gets so overwhelming and stressful, that knocking myself out just to stop feeling it starts to seem tempting.
Luckily, I do have the internet, so I can let my brain do the happy-thing, rather than the please-god-give-me-something-to-do-or-just-let-me-die-thing. Actually, using the internet - watching youtube, looking at memes, reading fanfiction - is one of the most relaxing things I can do, because I can get that stimulation while being passive, allowing my body and mind to rest, since I'm not stressing out about it or expending energy to create that stimulation.
Aw man, Bo's songs aside, I think you'd really enjoy his interviews, specifically the ones about the internet. I think you'd agree with a lot of his talking points.

I think the part about having "the world in your hands." Can take a darker tone than most would think. When the song slowed down it was almost like bo changed who he was speaking to. So think about it like this . Bo telling the internet that from the beginning having the world dependent having it relying on you was what the main design was of you the internet was. And look at you now look how you grew.

It is interesting how you reacted to the phrase "everything and anything all of the time" with mentioning "boundaries " like a store closing. I am a tattoo artist next to being a nurse assistant and I set boundaries to my clients sometimes. Like Sunday I don't always answer or when I have shift. I have lost clients because of boundaries.
he was actually playing as the internet (as a living character) offering you these different topics in a sadistic and extremely unusual manor,
so this is his latest special he shot, "inside". which took placer during quarantine, shot, directed, and edited in his apartment. he explains in another song, "all eyes on me" he had bad panic attacks while on stage, took time off for mental health and actually over the course of a few years, got better! decided to start doing standup/performing again and COVID hit.
A very cool special to watch. shows what some people dealt with and how they handled being stuck inside.

You really need to react to Left Brain Right Brain by Bo
This video means a whole lot to me. I first got internet access at age 8 and I've seen firsthand the awful horrible things it can do to a child's brain, heck, I lived it. I'm 18 now, I've been addicted to it for years and I wish so badly I'd never gotten into it. Recently, I decided I'm going into therapy as a career. I want to help kids slow down and process all of the chaos that we were much too late to stop. I'm so scared for children who won't know anything else.
For some reason the fact you called the way this song was gonna go less than halfway through told me I would like your stuff. Just found you, I feel like I’m gonna like it

You should watch his movie. If fact you 100% need to if you’re watching the clips. This movie was born because of the Covid Pandemic. It’s nothing like a normal movie, since he produced all of it by himself, it’s got all the emotions in it. but it would be an experience for you to watch it.
I'm so proud of my son because he's raising my 7 y/o grandson without social media. And if he does let him watch a RUclips video, it is always supervised. I've been listening to Bo Burnham since 2010 and I'm so glad to see you reacting to his content. I think he is one of the most intelligent comedians. Absolute genius. Side story, he began singing on RUclips songs that he would send to his older brother away at college (songs like: "my other half" and "my whole family thinks I'm gay" and "new math"). Then slowly he got more popular and began making specials. Recommendations: Art is dead, Repeat Stuff, God's Perspective, Sad, and Rant. The Rant song from his last special really touches on his personal struggles and it discusses whether he is truly happy. It ties right into the "Are you happy" song also, just saying how he puts on performances to please the audience, but he is slowly trying to not lose his sanity. Deep stuff for sure. Keep up the great work Tom!

I'm sure someone has already suggested it, but Burnham's song "Kanye Rant" has some subtle implications about how Bo was not coping well at the time with the anxiety and fame. In this special (Inside) he has a song called All Eyes On Me that goes more into the subject.
I think the post poignant thing he says in the song is "apathy's a tragedy and boredom's a crime". Everyone _must_ have an opinion, and everyone _must_ be doing something... all of the time.
That’s been human opinion for decades it just became more or less apparent depending on the subject. For example no one really cares about your opinion on new car technology but everybody cares about your opinion when it comes to something involving politics

Good reaction. I also found the line about “all the things we designed it to do” really chilling. Without going full conspiracy theory I think Bo is right that in some sense the tech people who got in at the ground floor with the internet very much planned this, at least some of them. Probably no one in 1999 was specifically imagining RUclips or Twitter but they saw the potential for monetisation and that was what drove the advances in the tech, and now here we are. We have walked with our eyes closed into a really weird and dangerous place, and these Silicon Valley “salamanders” (as Bo calls them) led us here on purpose.
Watching this in my hand sure shows perspective. Communicating with only my thumbs and everyone understands is more interesting than others can understand what you think by sounds coming out of your mouth.

Not only is the song itself speeding up, there are more and more background noises as the song progresses, and also the background becomes more and more clustered, just like the internet is becoming faster and more clustered. In the end of the song, there is everything, we have the full background noises and every light he used in the song turned on, and the song has became very fast.
"Apathy's a tragedy and boredom is a crime." You're not emotional enough, that drives user generated engagement down. The more hyped or angry people there are, the more hyped or angry people they breed.
It really does everything "we" designed it to do, which is to grow like cancer. We set the code for it to grow, and that's all, creating a feedback loop, influencing people to influence it into growing faster and faster.

I've only seen a few people talk about the hysterical laughter that gets louder and louder at the very end of the song. To me, that's the creepiest part. It's like the crowd at a circus is laughing and you're the clown
Even those of us who didn't grow up with the internet or anything like it we've got to admit we've become slaves to it. This isn't just young people. It's you and me as well my friend. If my connection goes down I don't even know what to do and I don't even participate in any other social media than YT. Apathy and boredom has become a crime.
You have no idea that you've gotten yourself into another rabbit hole... This song is part of his most recent special he has written, shot, edited and produced for Netflix all by himself, in his place during the pandemic. It's called "Inside"and definitely has some bangers and laughing-out-loud songs, but the overall tone and concept of this project is very self-observing, dealing with isolation, mental health and self-esteem on all scales. This special is an work of art and has to be seen in its entirety, but "comedy"+"goodbye" as a follow-up is a good start. "all eyes on me" is also essential, because it ties in a bit of his back story.
He started out on RUclips before it became a thing, has shown his musical talent and comedy writing from a young age, but also tested the boundaries with some content, that would have been cancelled, if posted today. I hold them dear to my heart nonetheless. So, if you'd like to go back a bit further, let's start with something more "Tom approved" stuff. Overall, I'd love to see your take on "From God's perspective, "Left brain, Right brain", "Sad", "Lower you Expectations", "Kill Yourself" (song title), and the list goes on (not a particular order).
My personal favorite, but kind of for advanced Bo listeners: "Can't handle this (Kanye Rant)". Anyway, you can't really go wrong with any of Bo's song, if you prepare yourself for some twists and turns.

You might like the show Crazy Ex-girlfriend. It is a hilarious series and a musical but also one of the best, most nuanced treatments of mental illness and mental health treatment that has ever been on television. Songs that are specifically mental health related include "A Diagnosis" and "Antidepressants are So Not a Big Deal".

First time watching your videos, but really enjoyed listening to your analysis. Would definitely recommend doing more Bo Burnham reaction videos, as I feel like his videos are SUPER thought provoking. A couple I would recommend would be "Left Brain, Right Brain" about the creative and analytical sides of the brain and how they work together, and also "Can't Handle This" also known as the "Kanye rant." Both amazing songs that are a very philosophical art form in my opinion. Keep doing you!!
