    Maybe I'm a little bit slower than other people. I took a while to get the "your inside is out" line. It's like.... before the internet everybody had their private lives inside, but now everybody knows everything about what you do because of social media and this volunteered exposition... so your inside is out. Very clever Mr.Burnham

    My little sister actually brought something up that I thought was super interesting when I showed her this song. She said that she interpreted the lighting as kind of the space of the internet. The little dots everywhere resembled the universe to her and she said it made her think it was meant to show how the internet knows and has everything. Then when he brings up when the internet was first coming up, all that's there is the single spotlight because at that point, the internet didn't have everything (like he said, it was only blogs and like 2 chat rooms). Then when the lighting changes a 3rd time when talking about the 2 year old growing up with internet, it's super hazy. She saw that as the internet kind of hypnotizing people into unwittingly growing it and getting their kids into it. Then ends with both lighting because it has everything now and still is hypnotizing us to this day.
    I hadn't seen a take like that yet so I thought it was super neat lol

    Such a surprisingly deep song. I wasn’t expecting a song that’s just so fun to listen to would have such double meaning and depth. In this song Bo himself IS the internet. And he plays the role of salesman, deceiver, and ferryman. The internet is almost a living thing. It has power, and it is NOT necessarily our friend. Devices like iPads “did exactly what we intended them to do”, ensnare and create an addiction. Apathy has become a tragedy and boredom is now a crime. Humanity was never intended to have access to everything at any point in time.

    • @CityStarrzz
      @CityStarrzz 3 года назад +23

      I mean, I wouldn’t say it wasn’t “intended” as I don’t think nature has a plan. But it’s definitely changed how we’re evolving and changing culture in a way we can’t really predict with any degree of accuracy.

      Part of your comment reminds me of another issue the internet has caused; we constantly worry about what other people think (which happened before on a MUCH smaller level and scale). Anonymous strangers can post pretty much whatever they want about other people. I think its also caused many people to be overly-obsessive about many things as well.
      I'm not religious at all, but it makes me think of the tree of knowledge of good and evil; people are much more aware of "evil" in the world thats always been there. People try way to hard now to virtue-signal to the rest of the world and act as though theyre "good" people and they have the perfect life, when theyre really not any different than everyone else.

    As someone once said..
    “The Internet is the best and worst thing humanity has every created.”
    For example, the parents of this generation don’t understand why their kids are so absorbed in their devices because they didn’t grow up with that so therefore they don’t know how to help. They try to use the things that their parents taught them, but it doesn’t work because it’s not the same thing, it’s a completely different issue. Which leads to conflict and parents guilt tripping their kids and pointing out they’re addicted to their devices and making them feel like they’re the only people in the world with this issue. We are the very first generation with the particular problem and are the first of many more to come.
    *And that personally scares me.*

    One thing I think you missed is this song compositionally is genius for the reason of the accelerating tempo gives you the feeling of being constantly bombarded with information, which is exactly what the internet is. It's a constant bombardment of information from all angles. It's actually so fast that you can't think about it, and you even miss some of it.
    This song starts off with the sense of innocence and like navigating the internet is easy, and it soon becomes overwhelming. And then you find the sinister undertones of the effect of the internet toward the end of the song.

  • @impossiblyindecisive
    @impossiblyindecisive 2 года назад +79

    Burnham has always been upfront with how much of a perfectionist he is with his art. He started on RUclips where you can fix and perfect. I personally think that is why he would have panic attacks at live shows. You can't stop, delete, and retake at a life performance. His Netflix special, "Inside," also shows his precision. It shows clips of him working behind the scenes. I really hope him and his partner are doing well.

    • @LizaQuin
      @LizaQuin  2 года назад +7

      I can definitely relate! Perfectionism has good intentions behind it, but can often be an artist's downfall as well. In the end the little imperfections and differences in each performance are the reason why people pay to come to live shows rather than just listening to the studio version. It's about seeing that performer as a human, "warts and all".

    Something that I like about the ending is that there's not a stinger note at the end. I feel like most people have come to expect there to be one more note at the end, but Bo leaves this silence almost like dead air. Because people expect that stinger note that doesn't happen, it leaves more of that uneasy feeling that the song has been giving us the whole time.

    I watched this before to listen to the song in general, but I never really thought about it. He is literally symbolizing to us the stages in which the internet hypnotizes you. First stage, just trying to convince you calmly with a few reasons. Second stage, showing you more stuff so you go back for more and more. Final stage… it’s far too late. The best part of the middle section in my opinion is the perspective of it. I remember back in the early days of tablet and smart phone development the key focus was to develop an interface that a "baby could navigate" (I don't recall exactly where I first heard that but it stuck with me). It was amazing to see the first smart phone interface, and how easy it was to use. Back then I thought it was just another generation improvement of technology; something that would improve quality of life. But I think here in this musical segment he sees it another way, as an intentional, deliberate, patient approach at targeting Gen-Z youth and groom them to becoming content providers. The line "unstoppable, *watchable*" and describing them as "insatiable" is on the nose. The whole point was to groom the children from the early 2000's into the internet-addicted, content providing subjects they are today.

    Suggestion, get a headphone splitter so you’re both listening to the audio in stereo as intended. You’re both missing a lot of the audio that is hard panned left or right.

    I also feel like the speeding up and him throwing internet related things at you faster and faster and you trying to process the jokes while he's onto the next is also symbolic of how society is still trying to process all of this new technology that keeps coming into our lives and we still havent fully processed how it's effecting us and the next thing gets here before we're even ready for it. Or maybe not lol

Like when you and your husband asked if he edited the vaccination joke in one take or multiple. It's insane that he did all of this by himself.

    with the line "your time is now, your insides out" I believe, it means that peoples true self comes out on the internet, the "inside" comes out with no filter because most of the time there are no consequences like you can put on a mask in front of people but as soon as a thing comes in were they have no idea who you are their true self shows

    I like this movie because it’s just him making a Live show without it actually being live.
    He made this solo in one room the whole time and it’s great. Plus he kinda made it like if someone recorded a behind the scenes movie, and instead of using the movie he used the behind the scenes footage as the movie. If you haven’t watched it I recommend it

    The sincere sounding slow ballad in the middle of the song ending in an evil laugh really hit me. I think it was showing how even when you find a honest heartfelt moment in the internet, it's really just another ploy to draw in your attention.
    BTW, I think your analysis is one of the best I've seen so far and I've been on a binge. It's insightful and fun. You caught most of the things I did after several playthroughs and still had new things to point out.

    The speeding up for me comes across as scrolling faster and faster. And the cutting starting at “He’s a healthy Breakfast Option” is like pop-up ads.
    Also I love that the zoom was matched perfectly on both sides with the “vaccinate your kids” keeping the pace of the shot pushing in on him.

He's obviously incredibly talented but your video really made me think about how much had to have gone into this. We already know he is kind of a one man show but understanding that he's like a master at lighting, piano, writing, singing, videoing, choreography... it's just mindblowing.

    You are already better than most reaction tubers, and I have only seen this video. You mentioned this is the 1st/2nd reaction video you have done so here is the shit sandwich (compliment, criticisms, complement) [assuming you want critique, if not then ignore the rest of this post and know that I think you are doing a fantastic job]:
    1) I LOVE the way you do the subtitles above the video.
    2) having multiple people in a reaction video is a good thing because it allows you to bounce your feelings off each other. Yall do a good job of taking advantage of that.
    3) rewind after a pause. when you go back after a pause rewind a few seconds so the audience (and yourself) are reminded where we are in the video
    4) don't talk over the video. I know it is organic but the audience wants you to see the whole thing and not miss a second
    5) I really like how you focused on the whole production (lyrics, the "set", music analysis, and stagecraft). most "vocal coaches" channels focus on just that aspect, this is a great changeup from that.

    My favourite part of the the quick juxtaposition is how it represents the actual internet experience so well, but in a way that you don't really think about until they're put together like this. "Here's a tip for straining pasta here's a nine year old that died" sounds shocking (when your brain catches up) when put together in song, but we really do scroll past dead children and buzzfeed food videos right next to each other and never really think about it. The fact it's so fast it takes a second for your brain to catch up and you miss half the things he's saying on the first pass are also very representative of the way it feels to be scrolling on the internet. So much information that you literally can't take it all in. Somehow he both makes the song feel like what the internet feels like, but also presents it in a way that communicates the shocking nature of the internet to the viewer who is already numb to it. It's a really delicate balance and he manages it so well.

    Yes absolutely pause and commentate , nothing to get triggered over ...it shows the difference between analysing, "reactions" and sitting there like cardboard just staring blankly at the whole content. And Bo's work is so dense with references and analysis food that people can talk about it for hours...great vid.

  • @Lucifronz

    I'm fairly confident he did this all in one shot, not just because of the quality of it, but because at this point he probably wanted to do a live show and likely wanted to do the preparation that's involved in it, such as getting it all in one take for the best performance possible (since you can't edit good takes in real life performance).

    A little background: Bo wrote and directed the film Eighth Grade in 2018. In his award speech for the screen play he talked about the struggles Gen Z is facing. He mentions that Gen Z was given these tools and have had to conform to this life that we created and judged them for. Obviously his actual speech is better but i think Welcome To The Internet is probably talking to the kids he wrote his film about
