Pack light but smart. The Mavic series are great in that manner. Also focus on finding the right music, as there wont be any other audio (sound effects yes, but likely not people talking). Cheers from Norway
I like getting the history and story of the place. Even on my camera 10 years ago, pre HD, one of my top videos is visiting a cocoa plantation in Trinidad. No great camera or sound, just a great tour guide giving us a private tour.
JUST DO IT... and tell a story - TELL A STORY!!!!! If not, it goes from a travel film to just B-roll shots.. Travel videos need a STORY, beginning a middle and end - a problem and resolution.
ACTUALLY ridiculous. Ive seen this now like 5 times over the past few weeks, and it makes me upset every single time. It's too good. Please take it down. Regards; the creative community.
does anyone else ever worry that the ease and ubiquity of capturing every moment on film takes us out of the present and out of ourselves and puts us into a curated fantasy of what never was?
It's not the same goal : either you enjoy the moment/landscapes/people by just contemplating them, or you enjoy them by capturing everything. You're missing out on one of them in both cases, and if you love filming and shooting, then you're probably better off enjoying things by shooting them, because it's what is going to give you the most joy
Maybe its a combination of both. Like, you need to enjoy the moment but at the same time if you enjoy capturing the moment, then do it. But, i guess it's all about balance. Not much or little of each thing ;)
I have the same question. I love taking video clips of my hikes and trips. Although sometimes I wonder if it would be better to just take photos and skip the video so it’s less involved and intrusive. But I love video so much. I still have VHS video from my childhood and I love being able to see those moments captured in time.
Maaaaaann I was travelling for 17 days in lofoten in July and watching you now walking near places where I camped, lived, filmed and droned makes me feel so nostalgic and I can't wait to let you show my EPIC LOFOTEN TRAVEL FILM haha. I think it would be fun for you as well to see how different people film the same places were you've been. Releasing it in September for sure, please god let my master @Matti Haapoja see this so he can watch his subscribers work and be proud of what he has taught them !! IT'S GOING TO BE EPICC !!
It's so true, if you don't master the camera at home you'll be a mess making travel videos! It wasn't until I finally stopped hectic traveling and chilled out at home that I learned SO much 👍🏼
Thanks Matti. I've been taking your advice and planning a lot of my days around sunrise & sunset shots. Though, the weather doesn't always cooperate so even the best plans don't always pan out. But I've been traveling for 2 weeks now and have been taking a ton of sunrise & sunset shots with my Mavic Air. You just can't beat the colors in the skies at those times. Though your trip looks epic! Thanks for inspiring... RG
Remembering to have fun and not just get the shot is such an important point. It almost feels forced to try and fake having a good time as opposed to experiencing the memory. 🙏
Norway is so grateful to film in..! We are just starting our Eurasian Vanlife vlog and we are doing more the cinematic look. We started in Norway and of course we got the first week of rain of the whole summer! But actually grateful because of the light.. We will definitely try some of your tips! //Evelina & Frederic, Scandinavians n hike lovers
Super super grateful, that your recent video posts are returning to your roots again. Sharing your knowledge and invaluable insights into planning, making and executing kick ass cinematography! Fewwww, Big thanks :)
I think the most important thing is think about the story. What story do you want to tell by showing those places. I think that's what makes a person hooked when watching a video
The story here on RUclips is always the same: An annoying person is rambling in the foreground while everything else is blurry. Nobody can see where he/she is. For some reason it is called cinematic nowadays. I think the proper term is extreme selfie mode.
Thanks Matti, I've learned so much from you!! I always take my drone on my hikes in British Columbia, I agree 100% with that tip :) LOVED your shots in this film.
That night when you guys flew the drone in henningsvear, me and my wife was also on that mountain, and I was flying some drone trying to get that awesome shot😄 Then me and my wife went to sleep in our tent next to that lake on the mountain:D lying there in the tent we could hear the drone abowe us hovering😄 I didn't know that it was you guys, if i had known that, i would have run to you and given you a hug because you are awesome! Keep up the good work😘 and i love Lofoten❤️ from 🇸🇪Sweden🇸🇪
Matti what's your best advice for making travel videos when you're not travelling? Like me, I'm starting to struggle for locations now because I've not travelled in a while but I enjoy making videos so I'm forced to try and be creative hehe
My tip, would be similar to your last part and to say, just take the shot. You can never learn from your own mistakes if you're to afraid to make them in the first place. Get the shot, learn from anything you did wrong, and improve next time. Life is about making the memories, not always about recording them.
Haha; «If you don’t know your settings inside and out, when you are home in your comfortable evironment, in your bedroom…» Great humour! I take it that Canadian and northern Norwegian way of thinking is quite similar! By the way; thank you for finding our part of Norway nice to be in when it comes to epicness!
Matti, I'm about to come to Full Frame world, you have work with both cameras. Shall I o for Sony A7 III or for Canon 6D MkII?. I'm on about video/photo. Low Light is important too, cause portrait fotography and Sunset pics are going to be taken A LOT. Cheers and thumbs up for you.
Awesome footage and tips! Matti, where was this recorded? More or less ;) I couldn't make the name out from what you say. I'm thinking about travelling to Norway and the views you show are bre-ath-ta-king!
Funny coincidence. I‘ll travel to Norway this or the next month and was thinking if I should make a travel video about the trip. I definitely will now. ;-) Hopefully I will have enough time to also shoot a short...ish short movie. Only been to Sweden for now but Norway looks amazing!
Pretty sure Matti could make the tutorial on this video.. 'tips on making a 7 tips on making cinematic travel films' film and it would still be super cinematic 😂
Bääääm.... subscribed! Soak up the channel right now. I am super interested how you achieve the motion blur inside the speed ramp at 00:14 :-) looks fantastic.
Hey Matti were the slight vignettes in the footage on purpose? Thought they gave a slight fish-lens effect haha which worked well here. Great job man, love your vids!
TOP 7 TRAVEL VIDEO TIPS: 1) Get a ton of random drone footage 2) Get another ton of that drone footage 3) T&O 4) Use every possible transition you can 5) Backflip into the water 6) Video without sky transition ain't epic 7) Girls in bikini 8) Bonus tip: There are aren't any other music genres than EDM/chillstep 9) PROFIT
Lets hear some of your tips for travel videos??? PS. I miss Norway... But its good to be home tooo
Pack light but smart. The Mavic series are great in that manner. Also focus on finding the right music, as there wont be any other audio (sound effects yes, but likely not people talking). Cheers from Norway

Where was that in Norway again???
JUST DO IT... and tell a story - TELL A STORY!!!!! If not, it goes from a travel film to just B-roll shots.. Travel videos need a STORY, beginning a middle and end - a problem and resolution.
Lofoten, a northern gem of ours :)
ACTUALLY ridiculous. Ive seen this now like 5 times over the past few weeks, and it makes me upset every single time. It's too good. Please take it down. Regards; the creative community.
😂 hahaha okay let’s plan the next one already 🙌🏻
If i have got a chance then i wanna met u once in my life.I love your vedio peter
This tips are precious !!! Thanks a lot !
Love all the sounds you use in this video, they are all from epidemic sound ?
Peter McKinnon 🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
does anyone else ever worry that the ease and ubiquity of capturing every moment on film takes us out of the present and out of ourselves and puts us into a curated fantasy of what never was?
Yeah like everytime!
I guess the secret is to let go of that fear and just not over doing it :)

Yes! That's why the first tip I would is observe and enjoy before starting shooting

That sunset in the drone shot on top of the mountain is EPIC!!!
Thanks for the tips Matti! Always trying to make my videos better each time. 😘❤🎥

Brilliant compositions within this vlog. The comp at 04:16 would make for an amazing photo
🙌🏻
Remembering to have fun and not just get the shot is such an important point. It almost feels forced to try and fake having a good time as opposed to experiencing the memory. 🙏
Yep for sure! That’s why I saved the best tip for last
One of my tips is: take only the footage you need! If there's too much footage to edit, chances of completing the video go WAY down!
Drivin' and Vibin' that’s kinda true tho. At least more than you think you need, but not too much
100% I’ve learned that with youtube
Drivin' and Vibin' about to finish a film I shot 1754 shots on. It is 5 minutes and it took me more than a month
But also don't film too little
Check out pancake timelines it’s supper dope to use this technique when you have a lot of footage
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, Matti has some of the best color grading I’ve seen on RUclips.
Thanks man! Much appreciated
Thanks for the inspiration and the education!
