I walked into Kohl’s today and had the best time killing 30 minutes and seeing beautiful things. But didn’t purchase one thing! I’m on the hunt for a couple things but I am not buying maybes. I felt so free to go into one of my favorite stores and had zero temptations to buy! Yay for the little wins in the day ❤
Girl that’s amazing!! Having the confidence to walk into any store without the temptation and being in control is one of the best part of minimalism!! ❤️ I love having self control over my money and home too😍thanks so much for sharing! So encouraging
Yes that’s a good feeling! I unsubscribed to Kohl’s emails. So not being bombarded with their emails at least four times a day, has helped me not to be tempted to shop online or in person.
Wanted fresh flowers for table, always. Decided on a single stem vase (florist charges $3.50 for 1 stem and carnation lasts about 8 days). Instead of buying vase, used a glass tonic water bottle with labels peeled off. Now we have a fresh flower always for about $3 per week, all in.
My power of restraint was eating out vs eating at home. It took a lot of restraint but we decided to eat at home. I didn’t want to spend the money, I didn’t want the to go boxes in my house, I didn’t want to wait for the order to be ready for pick up. I know myself well enough now that if I’m tired or if I have a valid reason, I need to listen to that and just eat at home. There was no reason to eat out except that it was dinner time. But restraint said ‘no, you’re headed home anyway and there’s food there.’
My restraint comes in the form of my wishlist. Whenever I think I need something, especially when I'm home, save for groceries, I put the item down on my wishlist. This way, I can go to the store when i want to see new peices and appreciate them without buying. On the offchance that I see something on my list, I know that I gave myself permission to buy it. I've had an item on my list since sometime last year, and i recently found it when i was thrifting. With this restraint I appreciate beautiful things without the need to acquire them.
Hey Becky, I always find it so calming listening to you 😊 I remember a few months ago I was trying to store some clothes and almost convinced myself that I needed to buy a storage bag, when I realised that I already had a plastic zip bag that a blanket had come in & that all I had to do was to remove the things I wasn't using from the bag & rehome/donate them & I could use the plastic storage bag for the clothes. Before I started decluttering and minimising I wouldn't have gone through the same thought process and would've ended up just buying something that I didn't really need. I felt ridiculously pleased with myself after and always try to shop my home first for anything I might need, it's amazing how being frugal and mindful makes you more creative 😀
Love this story so much 😍❤️❤️ it’s so true! I find myself more creative and it’s such a thrill to repurpose things I already have! I think so many of us can relate to this story! Thanks for sharing ❤️❤️
I was driving here listening to you and I had a thought, might as well share it: Maybe our lives, our homes, our closets have to be like a beautiful antique jewelry box, with a ballerina on top and a lovely melody, every time we open it. That holds our most prized heirlooms. Instead of being like a glass jar you find at thrift stores, that is though filled with all kinds of “treasures” looks very cluttered. And tou need to toss everything out in order to find what you want…😅
❤❤❤Thank you , Becky! I vision my home to be a peaceful and clean place. It's still a longer journey, but I guess , I made it half way! 😃 That's why I enjoy our camping car so much. It's an easy living with everything on board and everything has its home. ❤❤❤
❤ I’ve been on my minimalist journey for about 8 years. We have let go of so much, although I don’t have a percentage to claim. Restraint is crucial. My family likes to tease me about it, but I think they’re a bit jealous that I don’t have any messes all the time. Now, I just need to find a cooking and cleaning routine that works for me. My house is peaceful! Thank you for this great video!
That is so wonderful to hear ❤️❤️ my family teases me too but they also talk about how they watch my videos and what they like about them 😂 so I can only hope I’m rubbing off on them! Thanks so much for sharing ❤️❤️
At Home Goods yesterday I was overwhelmed to the point of leaving. There out of need instead of want urged me to purchase necessary items and leave quickly. Relief ensued when exiting store. It reminded me of a messy house. So minimized compared to 10 years ago when this journey began owning what i need instead of having everything that strikes my fancy in the moment. ❤ true story …
Totally agree ❤️❤️I used to love any kind of home good store and now I realize I can’t concentrate in those stores which I’m sure is their point so I buy more without thinking!
The experience of overwhelm you described when shopping at Home Goods is akin to what I felt when I was shopping at TJ Maxx recently. I hadn't been in a TJ Maxx in several months and needed a few pairs of trousers. There were so many clothes to sort through and I wasn't impressed with what I found, many of which lacked the quality I was looking for. I left with nothing and then went to Kohl's (within the same shopping plaza) and could feel how my nervous system was put at ease as the store layout is completely different. I found what I needed and bought 2 trousers and nothing else. I love this concept of having restraint. It takes practice, especially for those of us who haven't always subscribed to this. I can honestly say that it feels amazing when I can leave a store with exactly what I came there for and nothing extra or leave with nothing because I didn't find what I needed and also didn't succumb to the marketing ploys.
I love what you said ❤️ not feeling the need to buy just because the marketing ploys means I have self control and power over my money and emotions! Love it 👏❤️❤️
❤ yes i need more restraint! 😂 I remember a few weeks ago when I was at Marshall's i saw these beautiful picnic blankets with beautiful colorful patterns and at first i was like "oh we need one of these blankets we love the beach and going out in nature." Then remembered i already have at least two blankets at home i could use for this. So i backed away and once I was back home i put does two blankets in the entryway closet so they're easy to grab and go. I was so proud of myself. 🎉
♥ I'm decluttering now and realizing how hard it is to get rid of all the stuff I really want to get rid of. THAT'S what stops me from buying more stuff.. Like you said, where will this big set go when you're done with it? I'm trying to declutter about 30 years (or more) of stuff we've built up. Art supplies, furniture, home decor, etc. Clothes are actually (to me) the easiest to give to the local charities. But the STUFF... cleaning supplies we don't use, tools, etc. Who will take all these things? OMG the list goes on and on. It's overwhelming. Thanks so much for a great channel! You give me so much inspiration!
This is a great topic and one that's been on my mind a lot recently. I've definitely been caught up in those 'time-limited' deals, fearing that I'll miss out on an item if I don't buy it there and then. However, recently there was an item I almost purchased but decided to step back and not rush into it. Unsurprisingly, the 'deal' was still going a few months later. Weirdly though, when I realised there was no urgency, I instantly relaxed and didn't feel I needed the item anymore! Thank you for exploring this!
Thank you so much for sharing! I can relate so much to what you are saying! It’s amazing when you put the breaks on buying something and take away the urgency often I don’t really want it in the first place ❤️❤️
This is a great lesson. I am becoming a minimalist. Actually I think I always was minimalistic but some how did not have the language for it. Restraint is such a great concept.
I so prefer 2nd hand shopping to a Home Goods store nowadays. I haven't been in one in years. Stopping to think and using restraint leads to much freedom, both financially and for our physical spaces.
I felt the same when i went into kohls the other day. It was so full and almost no one was there shopping. I had not gone into a store like that in so long that it really caught me off guard.
Hahaha Jordan (my husband) knows Kohl’s is my least favorite store partly because of just what you said 👏 it’s soo full and cluttered it’s hard for me to find anything 🤦🏼♀️🤣
This is the reason I never liked to go to Home Goods, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and sometimes even Old Navy. I can not shop like that. It makes me very anxious, nervous, I DON'T WANT TO BE THERE!!! As soon as I walk out of those stores I felt relief! Target has a lot, but for some reason I can handle the way they set up their things. Granted I only walk around the perimeter, and only go down isle where I need something, it feels a little less overwhelming.
Target does feel like less in a bigger area so I see what you mean 👍 home goods was the most overwhelming I’ve seen in a while and I was so happy to leave 👏
♥ The final decluttering step of getting things out of my home is so annoying to me that I have no problem with restraint. If I bring new things in, I know some old things will have to go and I actually hate that part of the process because I don't trust thrift stores not to trash some perfectly useful items. This means I hold on to items until I can find the best option for them, such as giving to someone I know, having a yard sale, giving or selling online, donating to a fundraiser, bringing them to a church that helps those in need, etc.
Yes today at homegoods ( I work there si temptation is really there everyday) I bought a pink pair of Reebok shoes it was only 40$, already regretting it … think im gonna bring them back
Return. lol. I follow the rule of -if there is even a slight hesitation then that means it’s a return or a no buy from the start. Gotta absolutely love and need something before the trigger gets pulled.
I think I will always be a sucker for beautiful home decor. But, I’m proud of myself because the past few months I’ve sold & donated quite a bit of home decor. I think a lot of it was looking kind of junky. I’m going to write down this Restraint theme to remember. Since I love home decor so much, why not just have a few really beautiful pieces out that I can really appreciate & enjoy. Thanks for a great video! I’d avoid marble it stains very easily. What about a metal tray or a different rock material?
What kind of rock do you suggest?? I think all of us have a different threshold for the visual decor we can tolerate and enjoy and I’m probably on the much lower end but I’m so glad I can help ❤️ thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!!
I’m a minimalist and I still LOVE home goods! Lol. I only go there rarely now and always know exactly what I want when I go in there. I use to go in there and buy so many random things, but now it brings me joy seeing all the things I DONT want. Several times I have come out not finding what I want and it’s the weirdest but best feeling then walking out with nothing. I still enjoy seeing all the pretty things, but I am now able to see things without feeling like I have to own it. Anyway, I wanted to comment though because I would second think putting your coffee on marble, marble stains sooooo easily. A white marble would get gross very easily with coffee on it and it can be such a pain getting the stains out of it. I would look into something not porous. Maybe you could find a way to get a nice darker quartz in a small circle or square or something else that doesn’t absorb liquids without having to seal it all the time, you could probably even find a nice tile to set it on :)
U can go to a kitchen countertop store & they can cut u a piece of marble that is precise to the measurements u want & u can also pick out the marble that u like.
@@minimalease You’re very welcome. My daughter’s fiancé is completely redoing his 1960’s kitchen before their wedding. He got all new countertops and the contractor cut a piece for him that is the size of a big cutting board. That’s how I found out that u can do this.
Im traveling quite a bit this year... i decided i had to have a travel jewelry case. Had to have. So i decided to look for something i had already. I found an ipod case that wasnt being used. Perfection. And its a neutral color, which is all the rage now. Even though im the only one who will see it. 🤦♀️
Now when I'm thinking of buying something, I think what it will feel like when I declutter the item. If I' excited to get rid of it before I even buy it, it's a definite NO. 🙃
Instead of buying a marble slab that will also show stains, why not replace your broken coffee maker for roughly the same cost instead of adding more clutter to your countertop? Just my two cents!

I had a similar problem so I found a very pretty melamine tray with a lip around it. That way any overflow was contained.😊
