I have a small home and live a pretty minimal life. I had people coming over last night and there was no cleaning for days or panic cleaning. I did a few dishes and dusted surfaces in my living room. Then vacuumed... on my lunch hour... with a half hour left to eat and relax. Love these tips!
That’s amazing! And I know that feels so good! 😍 living simpler means being in charge of your things I spread of the other way around! ❤️ thanks so much for sharing and watching!!
I started decluttering about 7 years ago, when I had just had my 4th baby. I am now about to have my 7th baby and I can't imagine how we could function if our house was as full as it used to be! Our house still gets absolutely trashed pretty much everyday with so many people and pets but we can all chip in to tidy up and get everything thing pulled back together in an hour. Having so few of things like dishes and laundry so that we physically can't get behind is a game changer. We can't go a week without doing laundry, so it forces us to keep up with a load or 2 each day. I don't have enough dishes to go an entire day without doing the dishes. It really helps when you know you can't get so behind that it will take hours to catch up.
❤ A decade of decluttering and now its difficult to come up with things to declutter. The one in one out method is a game changer for me and my husband.
❤ I'm soooo guilty of constantly moving furniture, swapping decor, buying decor and changing furniture, always moving my plants around, organising and reorganising kids toys and kitchen multiple times a year, etc 🤦 Also having problems with finding place for new incoming items (especially after holiday season)... And often being temperamental, anxious and overly dramatic when I have too much on my to-do list and always rushing somethere because I'm late (it's not about the material clutter yet about cluttered mind and schedule). And often feeling uninspired in my kitchen too 😢 Thank you for your observations! 🤗
Aww thanks! I wish I had documented this whole journey so I’d have even more pictures but it is definitely possible to have a minimalist house for me it just took time and practice ❤️❤️
I used to think about the “what if” scenarios. And then I told myself If I end up planning a get together, I’ll grab disposable items. In your situation, I’d have a stack of disposable solo cups for the ready if there was talk of them coming over. Doesn’t take as much space as keeping all the wine glasses around. Also, who wants to wash that many wine glasses anyway 😊 And you’re right, it was fine!! ❤
My husband is pushing back on me decluttering. He doesn’t understand, and he thinks I am going through a phase. I appreciate blank walls, and apparently, my husband does not. He says our house doesn’t look like a home anymore. I challenged him that a house filled with stuff does not make a home. 😞
I'm sorry that is your experience ❤️❤️ My husband wasn't receptive at first, but it was because he thought I would just buy all the things again. Does he tell you exactly what kind of things he would like to add?? I will say my husband doesn't care too much about decor, but he does care about his shed and our utility room. So, I do my best to just help him organize it and keep it tidy and challenge him when I can to ask good questions about his stuff ❤️❤️
Different people respond differently to sensory stimulation. Some people get easily overstimulated. Others require a lot of stimulation. Decor (and even actual clutter) provides visual stimulation. To a person who needs a higher level of visual stimulation a busy room will feel more relaxing while a more sparse room may cause them to feel agitated. For someone who needs lower levels of stimulation the reverse is true. There are extreme cases on both sides who have what are called processing disorders. Most of us just lean one way or the other. Unfortunately you and your husband may be on different sides of the stimulation spectrum. If that is the case then you’re going to have manage your expectations for how far you can take declutter. You can and should of course get rid of useless things, but that doesn’t necessarily mean trying following a minimalist aesthetic.
Consider having one or two decor or art on the wall/in a room to make it more inviting. There's no connection between blank walls and minimalism. Just do what works for you (both) and reach a happy compromise. The minimalist aesthetic is overrated but minimalism is life-changing.
My husband wasn’t supportive either the first time I declutterred. Leave his stuff alone and keep decluttering your own things. Keep talking to him about the benefits of decluttering - clean home, money saved etc… without pushing him. Fast forward 11 years, my husband now has a personal uniform (small wardrobe) and loves being a minimalist.
I had a friend who was a hoarder, and her attachment to things overwhelmed my space. Her "just in case" mentality led to clutter, making it impossible to relax at home. Eventually, I had to declutter for my mental health, but she didn't understand and became upset when I got rid of items. Realizing her negativity, I chose to end the friendship to prioritize my well-being.
I know that must have been so hard and I’m sorry you had to make that choice ❤️ at a certain point keeping things becomes a mental health issue and I hope they can seek out help when their ready ❤️❤️
I dread coming home because all i do is vacumn, cook, clean and laundry. We are a family of six and while my house is declutterred and minimal having a family is so much work. I just want to go for a hike for a week and not do one chore. Maybe when I am 80 years old. I get to clean my house because I am healthy and my family lives in a clean home ❤
When it comes to cleaning and cooking it can all be very overwhelming! Sometimes small thing a added can actually help like our mop I’ve talk about before and our off brand rumba that vacuums our main floor everyday really helps my daily life ❤️ hope this helps let me know if you have any other ideas I’m sure we have all felt like you ❤️❤️
@@minimalease I will look for your mop recommendation. And do you think the rumba is as good as a human doing the work. We have 4 kids plus their friends over daily after school. I swear they drop crumbs as they walk around the kitchen. I am thankful our kids love being home just after 16 years of doing this and I am older you get tired and a little grumpy about it. I know I am lucky to have a home to clean too. And we have very little in our home which I am so thankful for.
This is so relatable. I actually paid a lot of money for a life coach have me write down all these tasks and then circle the ones that only I could do. That turned out to be 3-4 things. Anyone else is capable of chopping veggies, sweeping, etc. Can your family share the load more: what can you delegate?
I love an eclectic style. I also love the idea of just making do. If people don't like it, maybe it's time to declutter your friends. (They actually usually love it. 😉)
The comment about shifting and moving things. So me! Working on decluttering and pairing down my house so it's more simplified but I didn't know this was a sign. Very helpful! Thanks
Iam so glad you posted this. My family member was so mad Christmas for not having a long stem wine glass. We have tumblers and unbreakable wine glasses and she was upset no espresso maker. 😳 I just blew it off. Also the just in case we are downsizing to a condo being 60 and I always say what if the kids need somewhere to go in an emergency well they own their own home. I am a pro at making scenarios in my head😮
Loved this video so much Becky! So many ideas and tips. The constantly moving furniture around really spoke to me because that I what I spent years doing and still find myself wanting to do. Time to reevaluate my why for minimalism ❤
my washing machine is broken... that's a good sign that I don't want stuff on top of the washing machine or around it. but it leaves me conflicted on if I need more clothes (already 50 pieces total) and more 'just in case' towels and paper towels.
❤ whew. The last few are hitting me hard right now! I have little energy to unpack a weekend suitcase because my closet is crazy. I liked the pictures of your house with all the furniture because it still looked cute, but like you said it didn’t feel relaxing or easy to maintain.
Thanks! My husband always said he didn’t mind it but it was a lot to keep up with hahah and I couldn’t agree more! Neither of us had the energy to keep up with cleaning all the stuff even though it was cute 🤣
@@minimalease what you said about picture collages really resonated with me too! I thought I was going nuts because a neighbor friend put her collage up in one weekend and never tweaked it!? 😉
I have ocd and add and my mother is most likely a hoarder I dislike stuff around bc I like to clean but I have a closet full of containers in various colors and need help 🙄
Keep working as you feel motivated ❤️ I found I would have good days where I could get motivated to declutter a ton and on those days I wouldn’t challenge my gut instinct and I got rid of so much quickly ❤️❤️
@@minimalease I’m so scared of doing it wrong and I am an impulse giver and tosser however we live out of town so I have 20 minutes to get to the donation cite and I cannot tolerate it sitting at my hom🙁
Give yourself permission to just throw things in the garbage rather than donating them. Telling yourself “but maybe someone else use it” will just be a roadblock. I used to live in the city and did not have a working car. I had to take public transit everywhere. This made donating things very difficult. My (soon-to-be) ex-wife always said it was wasteful to throw things out if they could be donated. The end result was that we never got rid of anything.
Are you able to tell me where you got your headboard and floating bedside tables? We are without bedroom furniture and looking for something minimal and simple

Good for you! What an amazing accomplishment😊 I can’t wait to get to this point❤
My mom always told me, at the very least, to clean the bathroom.

#4 was the same for me! Cleaning and organizing seemed to never work for me, until I got rid of our possessions by 75%!
Yes! I always felt like cleaning was impossible to keep up with and it was all because I just had too stuff 🤦🏼♀️🤣
