    Due to moving to a smaller home, we had to declutter over 10 years' worth of stuff. It was a difficult process, with lots of emotional highs and lows but I learned some valuable lessons through the process which I share in this video.

    I am what I consider a minimalist and what I say is the most important lesson is that when you get rid of things you don't like, suddenly everything you look at it is something you value or love. Sounds obvious but looking around and seeing only things that make you happy is such a wonderful sensation.

    This is a very thoughtful video. I recently lost a baby that would have been my 9th child. I'm rather old now , 47 and don't believe I will have anymore babies but im struggling with parting with baby items, it is very emotional for me. Also, You have very beautiful blue eyes.

      Thank you for your kind comment. I'm so very sorry for the loss of your child. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to even think about parting with baby items. I don't think that is something you can rush. We're all on different paths, so one person's process may not apply to someone else. I have memory boxes containing sentimental items relating to people (and pets) who have passed. They are a huge comfort, knowing I can look inside and "reconnect" at any time ❤️

    Now,finally I am clearing out all my ' just in case ' stuff, shoes,clothes, books, cd's.. etc etc I am feeling very liberated,it really is doing my mental health the world of good.xx

    Oh my heart goes out to you for the loss of your sweet pet. We also lost our 20 year old cat in January 2024 and it was just devastating. This hit home. We are gradually feeling like ourselves but it's a huge adjustment. They are members of the family.

    "I wasn't ready to let them go" points to the importance of decluttering at one's own speed. Sometimes, we need time to make the 'let it go' decision and no one else can make that decision for us. Time to stop feeling guilty when we are "not ready"...yet.

    • @ThisEditedLife
      @ThisEditedLife  4 месяца назад +2

      Yes definitely! Whilst some approaches to decluttering work for some people, they might not be appropriate for others and that's okay ☺️ If we want the changes to be sustainable we have to make them in the way that works best for us.

    I’m slowly decluttering my home. My parents left myself and my four siblings a six bedroom home to declutter after they both passed away in 2021. They resisted our efforts to declutter their belongings when they were alive and able to. They lived there for over 50 years and it felt overwhelming at times.

    Intentionality is my favorite term to use to describe my work, life and home. “Does this thing serve me?” That Is the question that immediately comes to mind when cleaning or organizing my self. As I replace necessities, I am taking the time to explore options for filling that need and often end up having better quality and often second hand items. Gifts for others are primarily consumables or experiences, but if I am purchasing an item for someone else, I will ask them specifically about what they need.

    • @ThisEditedLife
      @ThisEditedLife  Месяц назад

      Yes, I think being intentional reminds us to slow down and think things through, which makes such a difference ☺️

    I am so very sorry you lost your Cookie, and I really do know how you feel. I too had to let my Charlie dog go, over 4 years ago now, but I miss him every day, and shall always do so, as he was the most important thing in my life. I now have Madge the rescue greyhound, and I tell her about Charlie, and tell her that she is valued as a different dog, but again, she is the most important thing to me, as I live alone with her. But I have a HUGE amount of de cluttering to do - I had 5 shops in the past selling arts and crafts (one shop at a time) and have moved so many times, bringing everything with me. I can not afford to get anyone else to help me, and do not have a car now as my anxiety stopped me driving, and live in a very rural spot, and only go out of my house to walk Madge, or take the rubbish to the end of the lane. I know it is all linked, and that if I could muster up the energy to do clutter, I would feel so much better. I really find your words so true, and thank you for your helpful videos. I wish there was someone like you who lived near to me, to help me, as I find having someone else to de clutter with does help. Maybe someone on here knows of someone in West Devon who could help? Blessings and thanks from Jilly & Madge, from West Devon, England. xxx

    It is dreadful when you have to let your beloved pet go - my Charlie dog meant everything to me, and I think of him every day, he passed over the rainbow bridge about 4 years ago now. I now have Madge the rescue greyhound, and I talk about him most days to her, she is herself, and Charlie will never be forgotten. These are the most important things, as you so rightly said, and I have so much stuff I need to get rid of in my home. The only thing that really matters to me is Madge, and myself, and as long as I have food and drink, and a roof over our heads for the two of us, and clothes to wear, then that is all that matters really. Thank you for your clarity on life, and thank you for this video. Blessings from Jilly & Madge, from a sunny West Devon, England. xxx

      Jilly, your comment made me tear up! It sounds as though Charlie was a real blessing, and I absolutely love the name Madge for your beautiful greyhound. Thanks so much for this honest reflection on your journey so far, a really helpful summary, to encourage and inform others. I've been on a similar journey myself over recent years, and can identify with all that you shared. To me, minimalism is a way of living freely, generously and fully, holding things lightly, rather than just implementing a system/rules. It's not about living without, it's about living with enough. It has taken me quite some time to really discover what it means to me lived out in practice, in the day to day decisions. I am still enjoying learning as I go along. Helpful to know that you, and many others, are on the same path 😊 thanks again!

    Speaking of recycling through stuff: I realize I am just shuffling papers + items. I am not truly decluttering. I want to keep in control during decluttering. I have a hoarding tendency. It's hard to not ADD items. I have adult attention issues.

    • @ThisEditedLife
      @ThisEditedLife  4 месяца назад

      It definitely takes more effort to not add items - I find that, too! I guess moving things around can help us feel as though we're doing 'something', especially if decluttering makes us feel like we're not in control.
