I tell people that watch enthusiasts are basically like a cross between car collectors and art enthusiasts. We're nuts, we know we're nuts, we don't need you to explain why we're nuts.
I've been there and car and art collecting are far nutsier. There's a certain pathetic moderate quaintness to us watchies compared to many alternatives.
Absolutely, positively, no one ever *EVER* is going to start a conversation by saying, "hey let me see your watch box! How's the collection doing these days??" And all of your precious curating and thoughtful positioning is really, truly only for you lol
I have the money, and desperately tried to convince myself to buy a Daytona because that’s what many people told me to buy, but no, I just couldn’t like that watch. I ended up buying a Moser Endeavour and a VC 1921 because that’s what I truly love.
You are buying a watch cause you like it. It reflects your personality and style; you love how it catches the light. You do not care about the resale value. You are keeping it for life. You will pass on to your children. Suddenly, since you bought it, you notice more people's wrists. On the last health check, you were okay, with no mental problems. You do not care about resale value. In a month, you start hearing voices in your head whispering... Open Chrono 24. No, you are not mad. You have just successfully been initiated into the watch world.
It is a fun hobby for everyone to enjoy. It brings together (unlike politicians) people who can be strangers who love to get together and discuss this hobby. Like cars, there is a watch for all different tastes from inexpensive to astronomical prices.
Love the direction the channels going in ❤ You talked about the best kind of us, the good lot. There's also the despicable kind, the snob. The fellow who thinks he has taste because he owns the Daytona.
Love this video. So true. I do believe I am an exception. Borrowing Andrew’s words, I am not into the horse and buggy. And I have a cost limit and total number of watches in my collection I will never exceed. But yes, there is always a new watch to lust after, no mater what niche you are a fan of or what rules you make up for this game.
I can honestly say honestly say. The Daytona seized to occupy my mind once I found the farce behind owning one at retail. Now my own holy trinity is the GO SEA-Q, JLC Polaris Chronograph Q9028181. And Blancpain Bathyscaphe Chrono Ceramic edition.
Well met name sake. Why I would refuse to buy a Rolex is not for the cash value. Rather my values. Rolex used to be an aspirational watch for the blue collar man, symbol of hard work and achievement. Now it is a icon of elitist Peacocks. Feel free to enjoy any watch you want. Keep your Daytona but I'll be wearing a watch with more meaning than the Nike swoosh.
A couple of years ago I spent a massive $400 on a Casio Oceanus that's been accurate to the second ever since. Should have stopped then. More recently I bought a Longines Chronograph that runs very accurately for a mechanical movement. Should have stopped then. You know where this is going...
I am up to my neck with this hobby, but still no wish to own a Daytona. I did go through a Rolex stage, but sold it, and genuinely haven't looked back. But have started thinking about an El Primero.
I recently went out to buy an "entry level" luxury watch and got one twice my self-imposed budget declaring that it will be the only luxury watch I'll ever need. Six weeks later...I'm looking again.
I have 14 watches and the itch returned! I didn't want to spend thousands to scratch it so I bought a couple of antique pocket watches. Both are over a hundred years old and cost a hell of a lot less than my cheapest luxury watch . I don't feel the itch so I think I have a temporary fix. (I often wear 3 piece suits so I can actually use them.)
Yep!! After 10+ years away from the hobby I scratched the itch in buying 3 if the current gen of the Seiko 5. They’re my daily beaters - while the Swiss are just being sleeping beauties.
I love that no-one even notices my Longines H.M. as it is so ordinary looking. I dislike being asked the cost of my watches. And yes, people are shocked to find that price point means I'm really only an entry-level player.
I have a couple friends who like watches and we discuss our watches when we get together. Apart from that not a single person has ever commented on what I have on my wrist. I buy watches for my own enjoyment, it is purely personal. I rotate wearing them every few weeks and it is like falling in love again. I can sit and stare at my watch for minutes on end, lost in thought, admiring the beauty and appreciating the amazing commitment to mechanical perfection that went into its construction. Same thing when driving my cars (yes, I have a collection of those too), I appreciate their physical beauty and the amazing engineering to generate that performance from igniting an explosive chemical.
Get a Casio F-91W and be done with it..... maybe add an A168 for those other occasions..... possibly a G-Shock for when the going gets rough..... maybe a mechanical watch as it doesn't need a battery and perish the thought maybe won't get fried by an EMP from doctor evil. Oh dear... I just read my comment... that explains why watch collections grow, we find reasons from out of thin air to get another watch. Now where did I put my F-91W... oh it's sitting right next to my backup F-91W. I'll get my coat.
Every watch addict should watch this video. Because it is a kind of addiction. I just bought two watches in the last two weeks. They’re really affordable Orients because my rationalisation was ditch the small expensive collection for more watches I just like. But I don’t need 6 chronos, 3 divers, and 2 dress watches. Plus my casios.
I’ve been telling my gf I’m a one watch guy. I’m no collector. I own 5 watches. 2 of which I bought in the past month. And surely I have good reasons to justify those purchases 😂
agreed haha. plus if I need to time something, I would rather just use my phone's stop watch. I don't think a majority of Daytona owners even use their chronographs, since you would have to unscrew them first before using it. By then most of what they time might already have passed by then.
Great video!! Everything rings true. For me it’s the difficulty in producing a watch. Im in precision machining and its truly amazing how these tiny machines are made
Hilarious and heart breaking comment about being able to afford high horology yet diminised eye sight means you can't see what you have. Case in point - just bought, ( retail ), an Ed White. Everyone I show it to oohs and aahs over the back of watch view but I can only nod my head and smile.
I had 16 Watches mostly Swiss, one German and all big Brands from Japan. I mainly gave them away because if you did not use them, they broke over time. Now I'm close to 75 years old and have only 4 watches left. However, the Watch I use the most is a simple Fossil Pathfinder (SOLAR similar to ECO DRIVE) It is convenient no need to shake a Watch or Watch winding.
I was cured of the Daytona obsession when I acquired the Limited Edition Heuer Autavia Jack Heuer 85th Anniversary. In my opinion it’s a near perfectly executed panda chronograph. It has superb specifications, functionality, aesthetics and history. It gets even more wrist time than my Rolex and Omega. I have not coveted the Daytona since.
😅 this is all soo true- I would argue that buying a homage perhaps is a great way to scratch the itch should you chose to go for the real deal. I bought a Moonwatch for this very reason and now own a lovely second hand speedy caliber 1861. Banged it on a Bond nato and I’m as happy as a pig in mud. I think the watch obsession is very different for everyone. I look at the Daytona and just go meh…… I appreciate it. I appreciate lots about big but I’ve never warmed to it at all. You (we 🎉) are collector(s), you (we🎉) like watches and you (we🎉) have some kind of addiction. The only thing that matters is that next one, excitement about exploring it and joy when you (I🎉) buy it.
I almost bought a watch Sunday afternoon, fortunately a couple of hours deliberation (sobering up) realised that 50's retro dive reinterpretation may not be the best way of spending the kids inheritance
I bought a Grand Seiko Tentagraph Chronograph so I'd lose every single penny invested, be ridiculed every day for it, and find myself never wanting to buy another watch again. ... it's the only way 😂
Buying a watch is not a logical or practical decision, as much as I try to make it to be. It’s largely an emotional decision. I don’t want to pull the trigger unless I’ve fallen in love with a watch. So, it keeps me from the impulse buying, but it doesn’t stop me from falling in love over and over again.
I own a 116520 and at 39mm, to me, it's the perfect chronograph... but here's the rub... I prefer my Speedie. Voilà in a nutshell is the inherent madness of watch collecting. A CasiOak instead of a Royal Oak... a Citizen Tsuyosa instead of an OP... I could go on...
Everything here said are FACTS. 😅 I have come to the same conclusions and my only reason for buying a mechanical watch is for “looks” only. Even Mr Wonderful has said that if he needed to know the time he would look at his phone. 😂😂😂
"One is never enough"...i keep telling myself my IWC Mark XVI is the only one I'll ever need....12 leather and nato straps later, to suppress the terrible urge to buy a second watch, I'm still hanging in there 😂
@@drfathertime why? I had an early AT 2503.50.00... Very nice but I prefer the IWC More tool like, much more legible and I prefer it The AT 38 is too thick for my taste. I am one who really doesn't think about the Daytona, I hate the busy dials and don't like chronographs, if I were to buy a Rolex it would be a day-date or sub, but I prefer the Tudor Black Bay Heritage but has to be 2023 and up so it has the in-house movement certified by COSC, but my watch list is simple, Tissot seastar 1000 grey dial, Longines hydro conquests black or grey like both and a Omega Seamaster Jacques Mayol, oh ya the tudo black bay 58/54 this watches have something I can't explain it I just love them well besides the beautiful engineering
And don't overlook us bottom feeders. Of all my (relatively) high priced watches, I still love the carbon weave and titanium case boasted by my Skagen fashion quartz chronograph--which continues to run like a fine...well...watch. Before the golden age of affordable 904 stainless and double-domed sapphire I would have given a big toe for half as good fit and finish and a tenth the accuracy.
If you're on the fence with a purchase, blue ball yourself - you can always buy more watches or window shop for that last watch box slot, but can't always return them. Yes you could sell your watch, (likely at a loss) but I think to most of us it's too much of an inconvenience than if you waited to truly decide if you want to buy - plus if you can wait long enough for a sale then it's a bonus and if it becomes unavailable then it wasn't meant to be.
Oh Gosh, we're all talking about the Daytona ! Paul Newman made it famous (or notorious). I'm firmly diseased with watch collector-nitis. After the Submariner I thought "that's it done!". Alas I find myself wanting for a GS or Cartier. Question : How many watches does one need to own to be called a collector and if the daily wear is a Casio F91W which I love, can this be included as part of t he "collection" ?
Hi Andrew, Just want to bring to your `additional` attention to the biggest event in the watch industry after the release of the Moonswatch and ThriftyFathoms (you would likely to be living in one of Moonswatch's planets if you didn't realize, right? ), Jody from JOMW released a new micro brand Erebus with their Origin watch. I would love to hear your take on it, and also will be great if you can invite him and his friends like Madwatch, Timeteller and Justthewatch for a good chat on the watch industry ahead, especially on RUclipsr Microbrands/Collabs (also TVG x Islander) and the differences with Mean x WF and other mainstream microbrands like Zelos etc. Warmest regards, Kev
Hey there, why don't you join us today in a video on straps .. like Erika's NATO straps etc. Your opinion on good ones one the market would be very interesting

yes, but it is comforting to have a 3rd party affirm our nutivity.
Watch enthusiasts are car collectors who have filled up their garages and gun safes.

Everything you said about the Daytona is spot on. I’ve tried to convince myself to want other chronographs for years 😂

That’s true, when you have those hype watches in the metal they are quite disappointing. Not even close to the promo videos

The watch snobs will be upset; but the enthusiasts and collectors will love your choices. At least I will as they are 2 of my favorites.

Thanks that was very funny and dam the truth hurts. Say hi to Tom.
I don’t even know what a chronometer is for. Less is more, the best time teller I own is a Meistersinger. Manual wind.
No cure for Daytona fever, I'm aftaid
Hi Andrew,
Just want to bring to your `additional` attention to the biggest event in the watch industry after the release of the Moonswatch and ThriftyFathoms (you would likely to be living in one of Moonswatch's planets if you didn't realize, right? ), Jody from JOMW released a new micro brand Erebus with their Origin watch.
Warmest regards,
Kev
