The Great LT1 & LT4 Oil Confusion // When to Use Which Oil & Filter // Breaking It All Down

  • Have you ever wondered why your 6th Gen Camaro owner's manual tells you to use a different oil viscosity based on what year your car was built? Why does the 2023 say to use DexosR, and earlier years tell you to use 5W-30, 5W-40 or 0W-40? When should I use 15W-50 and why? Why is the PF64 the right filter and the UPF64R is not recommended? I answer all of these questions and more in this video. This information applies to the LT1 & LT4 engine in the Camaro, but also has applications on some Cadillac's, and any other performance oriented, track-used vehicle.

    The 2023 Camaro track prep guide says 15W-50 for ZL1 1LE only. Does give the option of 15W-50 if 0W-40 not available for SS1LE. I can’t find anything about 5W-50

    • @FollowMyLine17
      @FollowMyLine17  Год назад +8

      Technically, it’s “required” for the ZL1 1LE. This is taken directly from the high-performance supplement, linked in the description when talking about the LT1 and the LT4:
      *15W-50 full synthetic engine oil may also be used for track use and is required on the ZL1 1LE, but after track use must be changed back to 0W-40 dexos2 for street use.*
      This was confirmed by the GM small block ACE as well. You can run 15W-50 in the SS for track use, and it’s recommended if you will be running a more aggressive tire like the SC3R or a slick tire, since G-forces will be higher.
      The 5W-50 is not in the manual because it was introduced and developed for the C8 Z06. This was also highly recommended by the small block engineer to replace the 0W-40 for 3-season vehicles that see a good amount of track use, but use street tires like the OEM SC3.

      Agreed. Did your dealership actually use the Mobil 1 0W40 Supercar oil?
      I wanted to take advantage of the included first service we all paid for when buying our cars, however when I called them they seemed clueless. I fear many dealerships may just throw in some of their bulk 5W30 or something to cheap out. May just spend the money about a $100. or so for the 10 quarts and do it myself which I do anyway.

    • @FollowMyLine17
      @FollowMyLine17  7 месяцев назад +1

      @cardo1111 on my 2018, the dealership I took the car to did not, and I made them drain it and refill. I had to show them all of the addendums to the 0W-40 for them to do so.
      When I bought my 2022, I worked with an incredible dealership out of Detroit (Matick) and I was there long enough to have them do the 500 mile change. They showed me the 55 gallon drum of Mobil 1 0W-40 they had for the Camaro and Corvette, and even walked me around the service shop while they changed my oil.
      Some dealers know exactly what they are doing and care about their customers and unfortunately, some don’t.

    With oil and racing, I have learned a lot through trial and error, analysis, and friend experiences. I have a simple model and myself and all my lt1 and lt4 friends follow it for track use. I'm talking time attack and some medium length practice sessions. Really never more than 15 to 20 minutes of hard track drive at a time. Keep it simple.. for the Lt1 and lt2 0w40 m1 euro spec with best fram filter (disagree or not it's the best option) or if you can't fram then oem filter and for the lt4 15w50 racing m1 and best fram filter. Street use just use 0w40 x3 all the time both engines. Change after every big weekend event or 3 auto cross events. Really what I watch for is how hot it gets. If in cool weather and temps never get above 260 then i run a little longer. If i see 270 to 285 i change it before next eventb. I have 12 oil analysis doing this with a few oils. 15w50 wins every time in c7z and 0w40 euro spec in lt1 cars. Although I did just buy a bunch of the 5w50 supercar. Scared to use it in my time attack c7z. 650 wheel hp e85. Btw fram xg12060 is 19 to 25 psi. Switch and do an analysis back to back. I did 4 times cause the ac delco was brought up so much i was doubting fram xg12060

It says ZL1 and 1LE meaning ZL1 1LE due to tires and suspension pulling more g's. Same for Z06. Thanks for a 1st class video on this stuff. I'm definitely changing to 5W50 supercar as well.

      Hey! Your 2023 SS 1LE calls for 0W-40. A 30 weight oil is too thin, even for regular street use. I’ve updated the description and a link to the track prep guide is included. Factory fill and everyday oil should still be 0W-40 ESP Dexos 2 -OR- 0W-40 Supercar Dexos R. The differences in Dexos 1 Gen.3 and Dexos 2 are really certifications for oil manufacturers to be suitable for use in GM engines. The Dexos 1 Gen. 3 is a newer variant designed for the smaller turbocharged engines.

    I think as long as you change your oil filter every 5,000 miles or less... It should never get clogged. I have rotated back and forth between Mobil 1 and Fram Ultra... You can't beat the price at Walmart.

    • @FollowMyLine17
      @FollowMyLine17  3 месяца назад

      The chance a filter gets clogged is fairly low, but in cases of extreme heat (track use) this can happen more frequently than it would ever happen street driving. The biggest thing to take away from this is that you don’t want a filter with too low of a bypass rating, because it can cause dirty unfiltered oil to go back into the engine. This wouldn’t be a huge issue if it happened once or twice, but repeatedly it could lead to extra wear and tear on the engine and possibly premature failure.

    I did not know about Supercar 5W-50. I have been running 5W-30 and the Mobil 1 filter because I thought it was better. (2018 owner's manual I did not know about the update!)
    I will be changing.
    1 question that is somewhat off-topic: do you run a catch can? There seems to be endless debate online. I track my SS 1LE a few times a year and had one installed, but the car was smoking at the end of long sessions. I took it off and have had no issues since. But according to the forums we need one to save the intake valves.
    You are very knowledgeable and well-researched, I'd just be curious what you do. Maybe you could make a video to share your thoughts.
    Another video idea would be to go through your garage. It looks like you have a sweet setup!
    Thank you for your fantastic videos.

    • @FollowMyLine17
      @FollowMyLine17  11 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you! I definitely have an opinion on catch cans. They do not belong on the car, ESPECIALLY if you track your vehicle. Some catch can manufacturers call that out, but most do not because they just want to sell you product. The intake valves will stay clean if you drive the car hard every once in a while. You made the right move by removing the catch can. I’ll have to think about making a catch can video, because I am not sure I can handle all of the misinformed comments about having one being better 😅. My garage is decent, but maybe once I get some sort of lift installed I can make a video about the garage! Thanks for the insight and support!!

His answer has always been we ran LT 1 and LT 4 engines an equivalent to 200 k miles and there was no significant carbon buildup on the valves. Catch cans are unnecessary.

      It could be, but there are so many variables to consider with a modified engine. I would recommend talking to your engine builder and see what they suggest, since they would be the most familiar with your build. The 50 weight oil may be too much, and they may recommend something more like 0W-40 or even 5W-30.

      The older Euro formula had much higher levels of calcium and wasn’t great for direct injection engines (LT1/LT4 are DI) but since the Supercar formulas have been released, Mobil 1 changed the formulation on the Euro ESP to meet Dexos 2. @@FollowMyLine17 Yeah, the Euro FS formula is a separate thing, it's been updated to SP now so has half magnesium. The high calcium wasn't a problem for DI alone though. The high calcium is only an issue with small engines that are highly turbocharged in combination with DI. It would have actually been fine for an NA engine. The ESP X3 is also a development of a separate program funded by Porsche separate from the other ESP Euro oils. I spoke with the program lead on that briefly. I can't conclusively say it is better than Supercar but it is higher HTHS and I do believe it is likely to be better overall. Still, we're splitting hairs here. If you are using yours on the street primarily, I would stick to the 0W-40 and switch to 5W-50 for track use (or 15W-50 if it’s a ZL1 1LE.) If it sees more high-G loads than grocery store trips, than running the 5W-50 full time is not an issue. I currently run 5W-50 full time, but it’s also not my daily driver. I think the Mobil 1 engineers built the lower bypass pressure into the filter to allow flow under very cold start conditions. If you change your at recommended intervals oil bypass due to plugged filter media is not an issue unless your engine is coming apart. The cold start prtection is much more important to reduction of engine wear.

    • @FollowMyLine17
      @FollowMyLine17  7 месяцев назад

      They may have, but it’s still far too low for the safe range in the LT1 and LT4. Too high of a risk to get contaminated unfiltered oil in when the filter isn’t necessarily clogged. If the bypass is opening for cold starts, I’d argue that isn’t a very good design to begin with and you may have something wrong with your engine anyway for it to build that much pressure in the filter on a cold start.

    • @jamescherney5874
      @jamescherney5874 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@FollowMyLine17 Thanks for your reply but I just don't follow your logic. If the filter is not clogged there is no danger of the bypass opening and the engine getting any unfiltered oil. Only if the media is clogged or the oil is so thick it builds up pressure in the filter will it bypass. At this point it better to have unfiltered oil going to the engine than little or no oil. A high bypass pressure setting may severely restrict the oil and ruin you your engine even if that trickle that gets through is "filtered."

      You absolutely could as long as it’s the newer PF63. The older version only had a 12psi bypass rating. It doesn’t hurt to have more filtering capability, but as my oil analysis’ have found, it isn’t really needed. As long as it doesn’t hang below the oil pan, it should be fine.

    Its not just about EPA, its about internal clearances where oil need to get in for lube. For instance a 50 weight oil in a normal LT1 is overkill. You will get better lube with a 30 weight rather than a 50 weight.

    • @FollowMyLine17
      @FollowMyLine17  Год назад +2

      For regular street driving, yes, 50 weight is overkill. If you start tracking the car hard, or on slicks or a competition tire like an SC3R or Cup 2 R, the 50 weight will save the engine from unscheduled rapid disassembly.

      This is a myth. As long as you’re not in bypass and the startup temperature is ok for your winter grade then the thicker oil is fine. Oil is pumped by a positive displacement pump, if the oil was too thick for the galleries you would have super high oil pressure.

Super interesting that the ESP oils or low - mid SAPs oils are becoming popular for the latest GM products. Ooil chemistries are getting magical with the lower sulfur fuel.
    In theory as thin as possible, as thick as necessary.

    There is some bad info in this video. I don't know how the notion that high viscosity is important because of "high-G" turns, but that's just ridiculous. It doesn't matter how many Gs you pull for how long - if your oil pickup becomes starved your engine is in trouble, and higher oil viscosity won't keep it from getting uncovered. Higher viscosity generally provides more kinematic viscosity at high temps and in high-shear conditions, which IS a thing during track use! That's the ONLY reason a higher-vis oil is often recommended for track use. The downside has a lot less to do with gas mileage (honestly, it probably makes no measurable difference in an LT4) and a lot more to do with cold startup protection. The 5w50 oil has about twice the viscosity at 96F as 0w40 ESP or Supercar (it has almost as high a 40C vis as the 15w50!), so it will literally take twice as long to reach all the important parts of your engine on a cold start on even the hottest summer days. In addition, the 15w50 is not Dexos 2 certified and does not play will with your catalytic converters or especially your intake valves on DI engines like the LT1/4. That is why you shouldn't keep it in your engine for regular street use. At least the Supercar 5w50 doesn't have that problem. But yeah, if you keep 5w50 Supercar in your car all the time and use it for regular street driving, every cold start is creating more engine wear than if you used 0W40. If you only drive your car once or twice a week, do a lot of track time, and have a different daily driver; then maybe 5w50 is a good option.
    Finally, the x3 version of 0w40 ESP (the "European" blend) has better specs than the old ESP or Supercar 0w40. You can see that in its higher 100C kinematic viscosity and its higher high-temp/high-shear viscosity. So it will do a better job on track than Supercar 0w40 but still give you much better cold-start protection than 5w50.

      It’s not “bad info” it’s just information you may not agree with. I’ve put as much of this info into terms most people understand and giving examples that make sense in real world conditions. I know you have done a lot of your own research on this topic as well, so I don’t want to sound dismissive of your comment.
      The information I am providing came directly from the small block team at GM. I didn’t pull this info out of a hat, and the examples given in the video were examples given to me during the several hours of calls I have had with that team in the past.
      Yes, 5W-50 will not offer as much cold weather or startup protection as 0W-40 and “could” take twice as long. The time you are referring to here is fractions of a second. Not minutes.
      While I absolutely appreciate your info, I will stick to what I have been told by the engineers at GM who designed and built the LT1 and LT4.

      @@FollowMyLine17 there are opinions that are open to agreement/disagreement. What I'm talking about is facts, which are not open to disagreement (unless one does experiments to disprove them). Viscosity is _literally_ the measure of how fast a fluid flows through a given orifice. So when M1's own data shows that 5w50 Supercar has a 40C kinematic viscosity of 111.8 mm2/s and 0w40 Supercar has 69.0 mm2/s, that means the 5w50 _literally_ takes 62% longer to reach parts after a cold start at 104F. That's not a matter of opinion. And if you think it only takes "fractions of a second" for this to happen, then I invite you to let your engine sit overnight, remove a valve cover, and time how long it takes oil to start flowing through the rockers after you cold-start the engine.
      As to the stuff about uncovering the oil pickup in hard cornering, apparently some GM engineer did say that. I've seen that conversation referenced elsewhere. But that's just plain silly. The higher 100C and High-temp/High-shear viscosity of the 5w50 or 15w50 is preferred for track use in the LT4 because of the extreme heat, pressures, and shear forces inside that supercharged engine during extended lapping sessions. Again, these are just facts.
      I want to emphasize that I agree that even an LT1 car driven mostly on track days will probably benefit from 5w50. But if it's a daily driver that sees occasional track use, 5w50 will allow more damage at startup than it will solve on track. The best option for those cars - other than changing to 15w50 just for the track day and then changing it out again right after - is to use the "European" 0w40 ESP x3, which has a better HTHS viscosity than the Supercar 0w40. It at least gives you better track protection without sacrificing cold-start protection.

    100% wrong on the filter bypass setting. The setting is what the media can stand, it has zero effect on oil flow. With a positive displacement pump, you will never lose flow or pressure, it will collapse the media if the setting is too high & that will never happen because that is taken into account when the bypass value is set. GM has specified higher bypass values because the oil pump relief is no longer at the pump, it is at the other end of the galley, so the pump is pushing full volume/pressure through the filter until the relief sees pressure & opens to relieve it. In all cases that filter is taking everything the pump is outputting, no relief valve at the pump to stop it. Most every filter will bypass on cold startup due to thick oil not passing through the media & opening the bypass. The fact that the Delco Gold is set so high is a testament to the media being able to withstand that amount of differential pressure. It could also mean the efficiency is not as great as other filters because it allows for more flow. You are making it sound like the bypass valve is regulating oil pressure & flow, it is not. It senses the differential pressure between the inlet & outlet of the filter & allows bypass if that gets too high.

    • @FollowMyLine17
      @FollowMyLine17  23 дня назад
