    I run my 2018 Harley Ultra belt real loose. About 3/4 inch total deflection with light finger pressure. Several reasons why are 1. less pressure on the rear axle bearings, and countershaft bearings, 2. the belt will give a little if a small stone gets in it, instead of puncturing the belt, and 3. when riding a passenger, it will not get excessively tight going over bumps. Also, after adjusting the rear axle alignment, I check that the belt is riding right down the center between the pulley flanges. If not, I adjust the axle accordingly to make that happen. Doing this for 15 years, and never had any belt problems.

My first alignment, I used the build in gage on the stock belt cover, yeah, accurate huh? My many times since have actually used a belt tension gage, works great and better peace of mind. My '02 Road King (a classic now!), which I have had since . . . '02, seems to wear out the front tire sooner . . . but have replaced many rears myself which definitely requires an alignment check. I like you brother. I want to share a methid I believe will be more accurate Than the swing arom frame bolt to the center of the axle bolt. You have two machined fat washer spacers and they have the notch in them in where the nipple of the adhuster bolts go into, and then 2 inches away from them you have the inner area of metal where the adjuster bolt screws into, and both of those pints are fixed and are machine true by the makers of these softal swing arms. So my method will be to get matching inner ID digital numbers between both sides that match, so the legend here is to adjust for your belt tension on the left side, then match you number to the right side, and that will be even more accurate than the one 17th allowance.
    I just purchased a 6 inch that is same as the cheapest one he is showing. Even if it is off, it wont matter in my case because it is to get a number for an ID and an OD of the area within a 2 inch adjustment for my rear wheel on a harley softail motorcycle. So its a matter of matching numbers per two sides is all I need. An OD and ID per side, then same for the other side. It wont matter what the numbers are at all, but rather matching numbers for both sides between two machined accurate points. I know my method will work, and when I show this on my channel many bikers are going to put these dealers out of money with their 2 foot long alignment tools that go from axle center of bolt to frame mount. The two measure points I am going to use that only sperate by two inched attach to two machined accurate points of fixed steel.

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  2 года назад +1

      Sounds interesting, ill have to check that out today and see what I can do with those points.

    • @EarlGuyton425
      @EarlGuyton425 2 года назад

      @@sikbaggers I hope I was descriptive enough in my comment, so you know exactly what I mean. The one spacer that has the notch for the nipple of the adjuster bolt, to the center of the inner area where the bolt comes through are both machined measured areas. So with a straight slide rule electronic mic you use the smaller blades that are for inner ID from the spacer notch to the inner of the other. For me being I have my belt tension perfect on my 02 softail custom, I will know its right when the right side matches with the left belt tension side. I also counted the outer threads of the adjuster bolts (being both are the same length) and 5 threads at present extend on both sides of the outer area and I previously wound up with that on an accurate adjustment on my 97 fatboy.

    To make sure your rear wheel is directly in line with the front wheel you can do overall wheel alignment of the back wheel in relation to the front wheel by taking a string line across the lower section of the back wheel forward to the front wheel comparing and adjusting the back wheel so that there is equal distance from the string either side of the front wheel. Two bits of 4 by 2 or similar equal size bits of wood either side of the front wheel will help keep the front wheel straight and allow a more precise measurement to be done. This will prevent crab like wheel tracking.

Your suspicion regarding the previous owner over-tightening the belt without rotating the wheel 90 degrees and rechecking for tight spots seems plausible. By using the deflection tool and referring to the workshop manual, you're taking the right steps to address the issue.

      From the few I have worked on I found there are 2 size Molex pins, .062 and .093, so be sure to buy the correct tool. Not sure about your wire snaking issue, but if you are trying to snake through a tube, I have found that if I start a string on one end and put a vac hose on the other end the vac will suck the string through. And now you have a pulling string. Not sure if this will work in your application, but maybe helpful to others, and for other applications.

    For rear axle alignment, would it be easier to go from the passenger peg on each side since your exhaust is in the way? Or is the idea that we can only guarantee that the swingarm bolt is accurate on both sides?

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  2 года назад +3

      Yes there are several different places you could go from but I would measure with a tape before removing the rear axle to those places to make sure they are in the exact same place on both sides...its not unlike HD to move something from side to side a little...however your swing arm has to be dead center so that, of course, is the best place to check from.

    • @steadyeddie7453

They did 1200 of labor to my bike, tires, were one of the repairs. Do you have any idea why the change and why they did not notice it during the test ride? It was obviously making a bad noise, like bad brakes, I thought, but it's the tire cutting into the guard dam it to he'll. The only thing I can think of is the delivery driver strapped it down to Tight, the guard is like a 55 Cadillac rear bumper hard steel I don't think it got bent.

    Do a video on belt tension on a touring model with air ride?

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  6 месяцев назад

      I have some videos that cover belt tension on the touring models but not specifically on the belt tension..any of the "wheel" videos I have will cover it...the only difference in doing it with air ride is getting it level, the bikes frame must be parallel with the ground. That is optimal riding position. As you know with air, if you move out that parallel area, it tightens and loosens the belt..so park your bike level, get the bikes frame as close to parallel with the ground and then use your belt tension too and sight window on your belt guard.

I do most all my own wrenching and pull the wheel to install new tires. i decided to reverse the axle so it comes out the left side instead of right. Since it has a safety c clip to keep the nut on the axle i see no problem with that. my big question is what change in your procedure to adjust the axle alignment do i need to make since i have reversed the axle. Or no change in procedure needed? i ask because the length it sticks out is different one side than the other.

    Ever tighten the belt with the left side bolt and then have the right side be too far back? I adjusted my belt to be in spec and am running into this it was on the loose end of spec and tried to put it in the middle.
    If the axle were too far forward, I’d just tighten the adjuster nut on the right side and it would push on the axle…
    But being too far back, if I loosen the adjuster nut, the axle stays where it is, and there’s just an air gap now between the nut and the axle.
