This video is great for clarifying how the steering wheel turns the truck, not the trailer. Thanks for showing this example. I've been in less severe versions of this too many times and never quite understood what was going on.
a tandem axil trailer reacts different to a tri axil and every make of truck differs, 30 years of trucking and sometimes i still fook it up. so new drivers don't worry,,,if in doubt ask for help its no shame , 10 shunts are better than 1 bump
I've told myself since day 1 that if I don't hit anything it's a successful back whether I get it in 1 or 20 pull forwards. As a new driver of 4 months I can say my first 6 weeks were worrying of what anyone watching would be thinking but now I couldnt care less what anyone who may be watching would be thinking. Take my time and GOAL every couple feet in tight spots. Once I realised most drivers already parked are sat on their bunk watching Netflix I feel a lot better
@MyTruckingSkills Hi David, I am ACTUALLY doing this now !!!! :) I decided to try this and. . . IT WORKED for me. I'm that guy from Ontario Canada that you helped with backing up. I was TERRIBLE at it. I'm better now but still have a long way to go. The trucking company I work for delivers for a major grocery chain in my area. So two days a week I shunt trailers at the grocers warehouse. It's an old warehouse [probably about 70 years] when the company had all straight boxes and may some tractors with pup trailers. . . anyway, in one of their produce areas of this warehouse, they have 9 docks in an underground garage. And of course now there are no straight box trucks. It's now tractors and 53 foot trailers. In this garage, there's barrrrrrely enough room to back up into a spot with a shunt truck but it can be done. And if your jack-knife timing isn't just right, you end up with your tractor in a hard jack-knife. Not as bad as in your video but still at a considerable angle. I just could not get that timing with regard to "when to jack-knife" and I was struggling. Until one day I sat there and thought about your idea and decided to try it. . . AND IT WORKED !!!! Tell you what, I still have your email from when we communicated last year. So the next time I have to shunt there, I'll take pictures of it and send it to you. I have to say I'm pretty proud of my accomplishment, and I have you to thank for it. Thanks so much for that tip man, now I use it all the time. Talk soon, Mike
Second video of yours I have seen and both times you presented situations & solutions that I have been in/used, granted the rig I was driving for 8 years was a 1 ton truck and 16’ tri-axle cargo trailer and never had a problem in a yard/dock but out at some of the sites I had to deliver/service… example Power Substations built to fit as much equipment in as small an area as safely possible, sucked to service.
The best way imo was just pulling to the left as I said to begin with and just adjust backing. But I guess if you're newer this is better since you're basically in the hole
yeah normally just know where that left trailer tire is and hug the line and get under the trailer making small adjustments with the occasional pull up to finish the job
This happens to me a lot I think why this happens is because I do not know when to chase I think I'm chasing later than I should is there any videos on chasing that would be great
The only problem I could imagine is that you can't see the far side of your trailer when you're in this situation. You may have to get out of lot or use a spotter to to the shimmy safely
But if you do all that in an automatic freight liner you will have a warning beep popping up on the dash saying “ clutch is overheated “ and your steering wheel will harden up and will make it 10 times harder to correct it
@Conrad Coolerfiend I drove trucks since 1973 my 23 year old son could back in with that much space and he's never drove truck after going with me for years on the truck I taught him there was better careers then trucking
The trick is the schools just teach you how to pass the test. I learned very quickly that knowing how to off set and parallel doesn't help at all for getting into a dock

I wish I found your videos 3 weeks ago!👍👍👍

Thanks I'm new to driving and only mainly drive 3 axle trailer what would I have to do differently to this example
Thank you
I’ve seen a guy dock at a 90 degree angle like you Demonstrated. Tight dock with hardly no space, I was really Impressed
Thank you omg ive been having this problem at every yard to drop off. So embarrassing
Absolutely loving this trick!

That's awesome to hear, and I would love to see this picture. Great to hear that things are going to for you, and I'm that I was able to help you out.
Learned lot from ur videos when i was new. They always help a lot. Thanks a lot.

Shimmy the trailer back and forth in small increments. Need to try that with the pups.
I was expecting you to say to unhook and rehook with the truck straightened, but no, this works just as well and much less cranking

When I was doing it daily it came second nature I did it without even thinking about it retired now really miss it
How do I do it in 15 minutes
Thanks David, forgive me if I got your name wrong, your videos have really helped me
Sweet this will come in handy
What angle is the best to start chasing what degree?
Excelent!
Son of a biscuit eater! I just had that issue at Walmart DC. I should have watched this as soon as you uploaded
This happens to me a lot I think why this happens is because I do not know when to chase I think I'm chasing later than I should is there any videos on chasing that would be great

Absolutely, lots of getting out and looking
2:52 from here you could also just drop the trailer and rehook it.
Reminds me of that golf cart scene in Austin Powers 😂
Ya, I was thinking that too when I made the video
Great video bro
It helps me a lot
Keep it up
I think I saw this method in an Austin Powers movie!
Is the root cause of this because we are chasing late?
Hey, I think your Mts Eu has a bug. Can you fix it. (Iphone)
whats the bug?
I was going to download this game but the developers sell user's data, including location and Device ID.
But if you do all that in an automatic freight liner you will have a warning beep popping up on the dash saying “ clutch is overheated “ and your steering wheel will harden up and will make it 10 times harder to correct it
Lol what? I never once had this happen when I'm backing and I've driven dozens of different freightliner.
Never happened me either. But just because it never happened to us does not mean it never happened ever and could be a problem. I miss manuals.
I had the same thing happen in a old freightliner lightweight, after switching to a newer truck fixed that issue 😂😂
Dont feather ur brake too much and u won't get that clutch overheat issue you either not using brake or just fully press the brake when backing.
@@andrewdinh5428 I agree it has to be this you feather to much.
Austin Power
That doesn't work when you don't have all that space in front of the truck like about 80 percent of the vendors in california.
well it does, you just have to be deeper in the spot before being able to do it. So you need to do a better initial back in job.
@Conrad Coolerfiend I drove trucks since 1973 my 23 year old son could back in with that much space and he's never drove truck after going with me for years on the truck I taught him there was better careers then trucking
😂
If you need this advice you better mail your CDL in and find a job at McDonalds.

Ok super trucker
