2021 BMW M850i Review: Sports Car Or Muscle Car ??

  • This week I got behind the wheel of a 2021 BMW M850i coupe, and boy oh boy was thing a blast to drive! While the Porsche 911 commands your attention and feels like an occasion, this German beast asks nothing of you but to take a seat (in exceptionally comfortable seats) and GO! While I must admit, I do love a car that requires your attention, and recognize that this is a dying art form in the automotive industry... there's something so satisfying about a big and luxurious Grand Tourer. Especially when that GT happens to pump 523 horses out of a twin-turbo V8 :)
    I loved the driving position in the M850i, as well as all the creature comforts it offered as opposed to its predecessors... I just happen to think that: Burly V8 + Heavy + Leather/Comfort = Muscle Car !!
    Call me crazy, but this was a refined Camaro, not a heavy 911... they stem from two completely different philosophies, and likely polarize consumers. If you enjoy the light and playful nature of a rear engine Porsche, you might find the M850i, regardless of its power, to be obese. If you believe the Porsche to be unsubstantial and too "go karty" then the M850i is the 'sporty' coupe for you!
    Watch the video to find out more and see just how poorly this large coupe does in the Tall Boy Test!!

    As an owner of a 22 M850 Gran Coupe, I looked real hard at the "real" M8 and here is the math I came up with. The 850 is 95% of the car that the M8 is at 71% of the cost. I could afford the M8, but why pay that much more for so little other than bragging rights. I'm old enough to not get caught up in pissing and ego contests and I'm not here to put more money in other's pockets.

      Thats the issue I was having as well. I’m going to buy my M850i this December but one if my friends kept saying give 30k more and get the M8. I checked the M8 out but just because it has a bit more horsepower and is a “real” M car, I can’t justify myself paying that much extra when I could be saving it for something else even though I can afford it.

      The M8 only has 94 HP more than the M850...its the same car for the most part with better suspension and a rear wheel option. You can easily tune the 850 for an extra 100 hp. M8 not worth it in my book. 850 convertible is unmatched.

    To equip the BMW 850i with a level equal to the Carrera 4S, the Porsche will cost over $30,000 more, yet it's much less luxurious. I have owned both, and the Porsche is louder, performs marginally better, bottoms out occasionally due to poor pavement in the real world, and the Porsche is downright spartan compared to the luxe, Merino BMW interior with glass controls and carbon accents everywhere-including the carbon roof. I love the Porsche, but it's so loud as to be tiring for any trips over an hour. Tougher to enter and exit. Yes, the Porsche is a sports car and the BMW is a GT. I bought a loaded M850i and absolutely love it.

    I picked up my 850 Grand Coupe two months ago. My two favorite recent cars were the 911 S and the G12 7 series I owned. The 911 is just a waste of capabilities where I live (Texas. All flat, no real driving roads) while the 7 series is just not sporty enough when you`re in the mood (which is rare again in Texas, but every now and again you just want the excitement of a sporty car).
    This is where the 850 comes in. It`s comfortable enough for daily driving and eating miles; but sporty enough when you want to step on it and have some fun without dealing with the harshness of the M8. But I agree, it would be better without the M badge (BMW should have just called it the 850).

    Just got this EXACT vehicle last week. Do you know if the paddle shifters need to be used in Sport Plus mode? Or can I turn sport plus on without having to use the paddle shifters? Tried searching online and couldn’t find anything in this.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 года назад

      You can leave the car in normal 'D' mode while in Sport Plus and do NOT need to use the paddles.
      I would however suggest using the paddles while in Sport Plus because the throttle is going to be more sensitive and the car will hold gears for what may seem like too long if you're not giving it the full beans... that way you have more control over the shift points.

    • @PlayafromtheHimalayas
      @PlayafromtheHimalayas Год назад +1

      I'm sure you've figured it out by now, but while in comfort mode you can hold the left shift paddle for a few seconds and it'll go into the best lowest gear to allow you to pass or start using the shift paddles.

      All such different beasts, I think the ZL1 is a pretty phenomenal driving experience, probably better than both the other options, but not as luxurious.
