    I met Jim at a meet and greet. I was so shocked when I saw him because he was one of my favorite guitar players. I was so taken back that I forgot to get him to sign my copy of .5 The Gray Chapter. I went back up to him after he finished signing everyone else’s things and asked him if he could sign my album. He said of course and talked to me a bit more. Right before Surfacing played, I was in the pit during their set and Jim noticed me in the crowd. He pointed at me, gave me a head nod and flicked me a guitar pick. It went the other direction and he tried one more time. It landed somewhere in front of me but the song was about to start so he mouthed “sorry” and shrugged. The pit started opening up and I saw his pick on the ground. You bet I snagged that and have it to this day. That is one of my favorite memories ever. Jim Root is legendary and changed my life from that day on.

      @@markmcdonnell I blame fan expectations more than I blame Corey's comparison, all he said was that he feels like the new album has "Iowa levels of heaviness" on it. That doesn't mean the whole album is going to be just like Iowa, just that certain songs or certain parts have a similar feel. But some fans hear that and expect the whole thing to sound just like it.
      But I do agree, that Jim's vague way of talking about new music is better to keep people's expectations at bay.

    Jim is absolutely right, there will never be another Iowa.
    That snapshot analogy was completely spot on.
    Even though they may not be as "Heavy" now, they are WAY BETTER musicians now than the Iowa days.
    So there are pros and cons either way.

      @Ikon What do you mean by "heavy" and what do you @Liam mean by "NOT WAY BETTER" ..... to me, they sound just as heavy as Iowa on certain needed songs and others not so much... but they definitely are writing and playing better(evolving) to a new and always improving Slipknot

    • @ArcticChonk
      @ArcticChonk 5 лет назад +14

      Also, Slipknot doesn't have the same kind of "mystique" surrounding them anymore like in the old days, so I think in a way it wouldn't make much sense making such an album, because as Jim states himself: "..to try and re-create that I think would be contrived and our fans would see right through it".

    • @Liam-fs5fe
      @Liam-fs5fe 5 лет назад +4

    Definitely have experienced him going out of his way for fans first hand. Slipknot were playing a date in my country and it was the first time I was going to see them. I got surprised with a VIP ticket so I got to go to a meet and greet. I was super nervous, as I was about to meet the band that had kept me above ground during my darkest period. I had gotten a poster with the VIP package, and I brought my Iowa CD for them to sign.
    People who were running the meet and greet told us that we could only get ONE item signed, and then move on. I panicked, and didn't know what to do.
    So, when it's my turn, Jim is first in line. He shakes my hand with the firmest handshake I've ever felt. He asks "So, what do you have there?" (I had all my things in a plastic bag)
    I go: "Well I don't know, I have a CD and a poster, but we could only get one item signed.."
    He immediately grabs the bag from me, takes out the poster first and signs that. Then he grabs the CD and signs that as well. After which, he passed both items on to the others and leaned in towards me and said "If anyone gives you crap for this, tell them to blame me" and then gave me a pat on the shoulder.
    One of the best moments I've experienced in meeting someone who means so much to me.

    Addressing the Iowa topic: Iowa came out 18 years ago. Music industry changes. The members of the band change both physically and mentally. The audience grows, demands fresh, sperimental new sounds, not the same old stuff over and over again. Music is an art, therefore is inevitable that is going to evolve, just take a look at how many art movements rotated just in the 20th century. We need to understand that if they kept their Iowa style and attitude they would have ended not only Slipknot, but some members (Corey first) their whole career a decade ago. But here we are, in 2019 and waiting for a new piece of art. We should be grateful!

    Jim said it best - we went back to what made Slipknot Slipknot. Playing and writing as a unit like we used to. And that’s where the chemistry happens naturally.

    Jim Root, staying with his roots and still as humble as the day he got into the business. Knowing that he would go out of his way to change one fan's live for the good and remembering that he was once in their shoes. That's a true gentleman!! Much respect, Brother!🤘🤘

    I'm glad he actually said their will never be another Iowa because it's true. Corey can say all the new stuff is heavy like that but It wont match the anger and intensity of that album which I like because that's what makes it unique from the rest of their albums.

    Jim has always been my fav member. Always honest and sincere. Talkative yet truthful. I like his little, “well there you go” comment when being told Corey is making the comparisons to Iowa. I always feel like those 2 have an interesting dynamic. I always wonder if they are like rival siblings? Anyway, Jim is highly underrated. And I love his Tele and Jazzmaster. Great instruments in my collection.
