Assault in the UK includes recklessly or intentionally causing the victim to fear that they are going to be attacked. There doesn't have to be any physical contact for an assault to occur, neither does the person who commits the assault have to act deliberately. You can defend yourself against an assault at any point, including BEFORE you are physically touched and 'self-defence' is what is called a 'total defence' in law. You do not need to demonstrate that you were actually about to be attacked, just that you feared an attack. You can also defend yourself however you wish, as long as you can demonstrate that YOU think you acted reasonably at the time. So that's not if another person thinks you acted reasonably - only that YOU did. You'd also be justified in using force to try and leave.

The council are a PUBLIC BODY which means you can also use the Human Rights Act 1998 ! Your unlawful detention was a criminal offence under English Common law. They took away your liberty for half an hour which is ondeed wrongful arrest and false imprisonment. Issue civil Tort law proceedings in the County Court. It will be a Human Rights issue too because the council is a public body. The council can be sued under vicariious liability - their security guards may be employed by a third party but your action needs to be against the council itself.

The police have literally done this to me in the last month. Security trapped me in a basement and refused to let me leave. It was bizarre.

This is a perfect example from the police of inherent bias. They had already decided which party they sided with, and then proceeded to victim blame repeatedly. They lacked the objectiveness required of a police officer. Very, very disappointed with these two.
Biased policing clearly evident and they failed to recognise that you were falsely imprisoned via an unlawful citizens arrest as they were only interested in whether you had been assaulted.

The council are a PUBLIC BODY which means you can also use the Human Rights Act 1998 ! Your unlawful detention was a criminal offence under English Common law. They took away your liberty for half an hour which is ondeed wrongful arrest and false imprisonment. Issue civil Tort law proceedings in the County Court. It will be a Human Rights issue too because the council is a public body. The council can be sued under vicariious liability - their security guards may be employed by a third party but your action needs to be against the council itself.
