Upholding the law means sticking to What Is, not What IF. It doesn't matter a solitary damn what might happen, that's gaslighting. Stick to the essentials ie what is the law, have you broken it, have the police any evidence/proof?
If you haven't broken the law, and no-one has any evidence to the contrary, there is no need to engage with the police. You especially do not help them with their enquiries, you don't have to correct their ignorance. I know it isn't easy, especially if you're a sociable person, but taking a leaf out of Focus Pocus's book would stand you in good stead. If police challenge you, question them in return. I've had to do it, and it's uncomfortable the first few times, but our servants must prove their knowledge and ability, not their ignorance and dependence on people giving information they aren't required to; can you tell I'm a bit peeved
