Great to see younger people discovering my favourite band. I strongly suggest that you wear headphones while listening to PF. Especially the studion versions. But anyway: enjoy!

This was actually a guest singer called Roger Harper singing this. Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour weren’t happy with their singing versions so Roy Harper who was an acquaintance and was working in another studio agreed to sing the song.

Slow funk is always a nice surprise. Especially when done in such a complete way. Lyrics, groove, production...everything in the right place. And, the keys...holy crap the keys. I love how they hold the foundation of the song. Great record too.

I used to be obsessed with this song. One of my favorite afternoons ever was back in 2008 when I drank an entire bottle of vodka while listening to Have A Cigar for about 20 strait times, it was quite a day.

Lead vocal is Roy Harper (not of Pink Floyd). Roger wanted David to sing it and David didn’t think he was right for the song. They went down the hall and a good friend helped

Oh man I saw your "Welcome to the Machine" reaction before here, ok so you're doing the "Wish You Were Here" album, great! I'd like to recommend "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", it's absolutely a Masterpiece!
Funny story about the singer on this song, he'd not a member of Pink Floyd. The two main singers of Pink Floyd were David Gilmour and Roger Waters, and neither one of them thought either one of their voices fit this song. One of their good friends, who happened to be in Abbey Road Studios when PF was recording this song, was British singer Roy Harper.
So he offered to do a take of the song, and the band loved it, so it stayed, the "Wish You Were Here" album was released in 1975. Two years after their iconic "Dark Side of the Moon" album.
This whole album is about their good friend and bandmate Syd Barrett, Barrett was one of the co-founders of Pink Floyd in 1964. Unfortunately, his massive use of LSD and other mind-altering drugs led to him being forced out of the band by 1968, it was also reported he was schizophrenic.
Besides Syd Barrett, (guitar, lead vocals), there was Roger Waters, (bass, vocals), Rick Wright, (keyboards, vocals), Nick Mason, (drums, percussion). This was the band from 1964 to the end of 1967, in 1968, David Gilmour replaced Syd Barrett on guitar and lead vocals. They stayed that way until around 1987 when Roger Waters quit the band.
From 1987 to 2006 Pink Floyd consisted of the three remaining members, Dave Gilmour, Rick Wright, Nick Mason. David Gilmour continued on performing Pink Floyd music as well as his own, under his own 2016, ha was 70 years old.

Awesome Pink Floyd song. Brutal guitar by David Gilmour. Excellent choice. Another proposal for the future: From the Beginning, by Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Just a note for those of the younger generations.
Pink Floyd is supposed to be experienced as an Album. As tracks on DSotM, Wish You Were Here and Animals albums, flow cohesively right into the next Track on the Album.
I consider those entire albums as a Song not so much the individual tracks.
Here is another awesome Rock band from the 1970s

Led Zeppelin did a song called "Hats Off to Roy Harper" the man drafted to sing this as David and Roger could get their voices to work with the feel of this song.

  • @robertjewell9727

David Gilmour (,guitar) and Roger Waters (bassl sang lead vocals for Pink Floyd and I'd always thought this was David singing, but neither Roger or David thought their voices were right for this song so they got guest vocalist Roy Harper who does a positively superb job. The song is about all the management that beseiges creativity when you're a rock and roll band and I like how the music has a rising and falling structure in its chordal structure that reflects this heavy notion of success or failure.

There is a very good reason why it goes 'whoooosh!' to mono at the end, its a transition into the next track, Wish You Were Here. Reactors puzzle over this because listening to individual tracks with PF albums as you generally cut the transitions out. Listen to the whole album in one go, it makes more sense. Think of PF albums as one track, different moods.

The whole Wish You Were Here album carries two main themes. In this song, and in Welcome To The Machine, it is the the real nature of the music business. Hard nosed greedy corporate executives. Pink Floyd rose so quickly, after Dark Side of The Moon, from being a relatively unsuccessful arty-cult band to being huge megastars, with all that entails. I think they were not ready for what 'hit' them'. Roger Waters, the lyricist had to quickly come up with songs for the next LP (WYWH) and wrote about what he was feeling. Some of that was the pressure of rubbing up against the expectation of big business.
The other theme of the album was how much they missed Syd Barrett, the original band leader and songwriter, and the sad story of what had happened to him. Mentally destroyed by too much LSD and not helped by record execs who wanted hit singles back in the late 60's. So, the Floyd were sad, pressured and a bit angry when they made this. Waters was airing his grievances, backed up by the wonderful emotional musicianship of his cohorts and Roy Harper did the vocals as he was a friend of theirs, was in the studio complex at the same time and solved a problem as neither Roger or David could quite deliver a vocal take they liked.

The guy singing this song is actually Roy Harper who is not even a member of Pink Floyd. The band has always been unafraid and experimental to try out new stuff, even if it means having a non-member sing lead vocals and it shows! You only need to look at the entire history of Pink Floyd to know that their music has changed three times, what I like to think of as, the three Eras of Pink Floyd (the Syd Barrett Era, the Popular/Mainstream 4 Band member Era, and finally the Post Roger Waters Era). Ummagumma is said to be their most avant-garde, experimental album ever. So yeah, Roy sang Have A Cigar. The only other Floyd song to my knowledge not sung by a Floyd member is The Great Gig in the Sky which is sung by Clare Torry (there are no lyrics in this song, she just uses her wordless vocals).

The album was , wish you were here, and it was written in rememberence of Syd Barret, a previous member og the group. The albums needs to be listen to from start to finnish. At least Dark side of the moon-Wish you were here-The wall, and you also need to listen to the pulse consert from 1994 an the live Echoes from 1972. It`s hard to pick, but these are some of my favorites. If there is some issues on the spelling, well , in my defence, english is not my native tung.Take care nd listen to much more PF.
