My mom is 82 and after passing out from choking on a large pill… she went from fully independent living to the local hospital with no ability to swallow and vertigo. Amazing it wasn’t worse … after watching your video I can really appreciate the amazing abilities of the medulla oblongata/brain stem. Haven’t had Anatomy and Physiology since the early 90’s but always enjoyed understanding how it all works.
I hope neuroplasicity is a real thing and my mom gets the right therapy to become 100% again! Thank you again.. Great vid

@@Chiboza Life is definitely different these days with balance and visual issues being the constant daily troublesome areas. But life is good. Heck, could be much worse. I continue with physical therapy. They kick my bootie! I need it. Did you join the Wallenberg group on Facebook? This group has been good for me. Knowing we are not alone and have so many commonalities yet each has their own intricacies. The medical information has been limited. So having this group available has been very beneficial (hearing from the people that are living with this from around the world of all ages). Thank you for reaching out to me. Never give up. Small gains continue - even 4 years post.

Great job Prof Zach(and by extension the entire team)👍👍
    I would like to add:
Yes,the anterior spinothalamic tract joins the lateral spinothalamic tract forming the spinal lemniscus at some point in the rostral part of the ventrolateral part of the medulla but in lateral medulla syndrome,it is the:
▪️Lateral spinothalamic tract that gets affected(likely due to its lateral position) thus resulting in loss of pain and temperature in the trunk and limbs(i.e because of the somatropic organization)
▪️There is also loss of pain and temperature on the face( this is one is ipsilateral) as the Trigeminal nerve also gets affected.Affectation of the latter could also result in trismus(due to hyper contraction).

God has sent us his man to end our suffering and misery.
This man must be protected for the betterment of Mankind ❤.
The way u explained the brainstem strokes has finally made me understand it completely and really given me a sense of confidence. Lateral medullary syndrome has such a wide variety of presentations but with this i think i understand why its soo important for exams as soo many nuclei are involved and hence an exam fav.

I just want to make a point of clarification. Dysphonia should be a weakness of the soft palate not the larynx because phonation or guttural sounds are made by the elevation of the soft palate to obstruct the nasopharyngeal passage. But I'm just being too technical.
All in all, i love these lectures and it makes understanding all the long neuroanatomy books so much easier. It is so hard to read books like Carpenter's which is so deep or books by Snell which is so superficial without getting lost or loosing concentration. I wish my teachers in anatomy could teach like you. All praises sir and more power to your advocacy of teaching future doctors. Full respect for your knowledge and your love of teaching.

Indeed you are a superstar and a genius teacher with a very pleasant personality . I have learned a lot from your videos. Yet allow me to ask you a few questions 1) In the trigeminal ganglion loss of the medullary part why do we lose the sensation on the ipsilateral side of the face while the other nuclei of this same nerve that are present in the pons and midbrain are still intact. 2) What is Wellenberg syndrome . 3) A personal question ... why do you always put a hat on your head? Many many thanks from Lebanon.
