I'm sure there were reasons that they chose to deviate from Clavell's masterpiece, but I can't help thinking that, in doing so, they sacrificed a bit of the richness and nuance of the characters as written.

Mariko wasn't involved in the discussion with Fujiko. Toranaga did that directly as her liege lord. Why they made this change is beyond me, unless they wanted to avoid male domination over the women.
Well, Toranaga is still boss and Japan is still rather patriarchal hellhole, but perhaps the goal is to show us that Torunaga has this thing called social inteligence. By sending as his emissary Mariko he ensures acceptance of his will and preventing ill will between him and Fujiko.
It could be because Fuji would take it easier from someone she could relate to i.e. another woman. It could also be to avoid Fuji harboring ill will against Torunaga. IT COOOULD also be a storytelling device to show the intrigue of women's relationships and influence.
@@SharonVeeLee Could be. But the book shows a stronger Fujiko as she bargains Toranaga down to six months. Such bargaining with her liege lord shows how firm she was in her belief. It was wasted on Mariko.
@@SharonVeeLee Your last 'could be' is probably close to the truth. Toranaga delegated some things to Mariko in the book (e.g., conversations with Gyoko over Kiku) but these were not samurai to samurai events. Too, it may have been a way to combine two scenes into one. Toranaga ordered Fujiko's husband's death, so it was more likely that he handle Fujiko directly in this manner, vice delegating it to Mariko. Toranaga was her liege lord, so the job had to fall to him. BTW, don't you see how the change altered how we see Fujiko's character? It's one thing to complain to Mariko (her aunt, if memory serves) and quite another to argue with Toranaga face to face as she actually did. She showed real courage and character in her exchanges with Toranaga on the matter. Maybe they tried to make up for it in the guns episode. It was Mariko's idea to have Blackthorne give the guns to Fujiko, not Fujiko's. After Omi backed down, she did extend her care of Blackthorne by presenting him with her family's swords, bringing the question of his samurai status to the forefront. I fear in the series we will see Fujiko develop into the same kind of manly woman as Mariko. Too bad: in overcoming her fears and revulsion, she defines for us the meaning of being a samurai, even though she's a woman. And she does so using her brains. Women are so much more effective using female weapons, not those of a man.

And it relieves Fuji from having to do something she is unwilling to do. Dances with Wolves had a similar dynamic between Dunbar (Costner) and Stands With a Fist(McDonnell) who was captured as a child by the Lakota. She became an interpreter for Kicking Bird who wanted to find out information about the White man's military and government. Toronaga had in Mariko a similar informant, realizing the amount of knowledge about the Portuguese, the Spaniards and the Catholics keep secret that Blackthorn had knowledge of.

I don't think that any viewers can dispute that Moeka Hoshi has been able to put a lot of ' personality ' into her role, and so many of us consider her to be a little cutie lady....
Why the crap did they change this? This is a negotiation between Torinaga and Fujiko... and no one feels sorry for Makio losing Buntaro; only that he might have been denied the honorable death at the dock... and having her counter-offer? If you think you are smarter than the author of a book: don't adapt his book. I understand that some things will change from book to screen... the nature of the medium... but there's no medium-related reason for this change. The more I see of this, the more I think the people who made this show actively dislike the book they are adapting.
I’m good with it. More realistic depiction of who would’ve had the conversation with Fujiko. Hiroyuki Sanada mentioned the series shades toward Japanese cultural accuracy (vs. strict adherence to the novel).
considering the amount and quality of the effort they put into this series, with even die hard historians of Japanese culture and tradition praising it, i think they do justice to the book. a few alterations here and there is acceptable IMHO. but that's just my opinion of course.
The acting is fantastic. However, I dislike Anjin’s character arc. Unless there is a big reveal in the last chapters I don’t understand the need for his character.

She became an interpreter for Kicking Bird who wanted to find out information about the White man's military and government. Toronaga had in Mariko a similar informant, realizing the amount of knowledge about the Portuguese, the Spaniards and the Catholics keep secret that Blackthorn had knowledge of.
@@sanseiryu Lady Mariko also spoke Latin.
@@clare5one Ah yes...thank you, I forgot. I think that in the original series, Mariko and Blackthorne spoke in Latin to each other romantically since it was unlikely any Japanese around them understood Latin.
“She’ll give six months.”
“Ok, execute her for insubordination. Any other decent looking women around here?”
I’m sorry but the idea of Fuji daring to say that to her Samurai liege Lord is painfully absurd.
Why? What she had to loose at that point?
@@Jarni1979 Not supposed to do ANYTHING but obey Lord Toranaga...
It just sunk in to me that Fuji's actress is the soapland girl in Million Yen Women! So that's why I have a crush on her! XD
I can't believe she had a choice at all anyway. Good for her for the rebuttal.
Is there a chance for mariko to come back alive in s2? I dont mind if she becomes part cyborg tbh.
So sorry... No season 2.... Not even for a cyborg !!!!!
@@richardruff8712 season 2 has been confirmed so theres a chance for marikotron to appear.
@@Jinisinsane So... This will be of great interest to us all... Maybe a different storyline away from the book ?... I want to see Fujiko return to charm us all...
Fuji is destined to be Johns wife, unlike Mariko, who’s only destiny is to die by the sword.
No no no,, the filthy stinking barbarian Anjin does NOT get Fuji LMAO yes, she is forced to live with him for a while but she is VERY unwilling, she bitterly hates him, and he forced her into bed anyway,, and when she finds herself pregnant from the disgusting barbarian's she commits suicide by throwing herself off the cliff to join her HUSBAND in death, rather than being forced to give birth to her rapist's spawn.
Bomb, actually.
@@projektkobra2247didnt they imply that fuji commit seppuku after the 6 months in the novel? Havent read in a while.
@@Orange2Timess Its not depicted, but left open, esp. since she is pregnant with his baby in the book.
@@projektkobra2247 guess it depends on what the showriters will do here.
Fuji: The best Wifu.
Anyone else think the other actress, not Fuji's actress, looks a LOT like Lena Headey? Because she keeps making me think of her in this scene
Do you mean... Sarah Connor ?
私だったら天国の赤ちゃんのところに早く行きたい🤮becouse,I love my baby...
For anyone too lazy to read the source material. Fuji is 19 in the source.😂
For those of us who HAVE read the book several times, I cannot recall how old Mariko was supposed to be ? ... Anybody know ?
And 19 is considered old back then, if u were 16 , u were ripe for marriage
@@jessicaregina1956 Yes, that seems to be the case... So, if Mariko was about late 20's or older, then she would have been considered to be an older lady ?
Yes, its a thing in older chinese songs for the singer to lament not being married at 17-18 🤣
@@jessicaregina1956So probably the life expectancy in Japan, at that time, was probably no more than 45 to 50 years ?
Her husband killed her baby and himself and people expect her to bed another..
This scene never took place between these two characters it was Tornaga and Fuji. Mariko had no authority over her.
Yes, true... I guess that you have read the book, also...?
@@richardruff8712 Yes repeatedly!
@@virginiascurti5036 Yes, my good old Coronet paperback book has had all 1244 pages well read, since the 1980's... IMO, both the 1980 and 2024 versions, have veered away from the story, by having two rather pretty actresses play the part of Fuji or Fujiko...
Hiroyuki Sanada mentioned the series shades toward Japanese cultural accuracy (vs. strict adherence to the novel).
fuji doesnt feel sorry about her losing buntaro, she feels sorry about the dishonor felt by Makio over her family siht
considering the amount and quality of the effort they put into this series, with even die hard historians of Japanese culture and tradition praising it, i think they do justice to the book. a few alterations here and there is acceptable IMHO. but that's just my opinion of course.
waifu material❤
The acting is fantastic. However, I dislike Anjin’s character arc. Unless there is a big reveal in the last chapters I don’t understand the need for his character.
This reminds us that everyone regardless of skin can be a racist, even if it is a fictional depiction. Its still something very real
What
She is pretty paled skinned to be honest, so it should be consider as a subtype of white racism 😝
wtf she like jisoo blackpink twin xD
Shogun 1980 12 hours long. Shogun 2024 a little under 6 hours long. You decide.
Shogun 2024 is 10 hours long. Only6 have been aired so far. There are 4 to go until the end of April.
I rewatched the 1980 series before this show. It was very boring sometimes because there were so many unnecessary long scenes in the old series. I liked the 1980 series in the past but today I like the new version more. But both deserve a rank in TV history.
Oh God... i wish that there'd be a scene wherein these two would just kiss.
What the heeeellll
Good lord, new jav theme unlock thanks shogun
Don't think that was in the book ?
I Would've used her 24/7🥰😍to be a hatamoto☺
