@@AndrewLonergan-sp1ec True, he didn’t have the authority, but with how much he respected Fuji at that point, it was sort of a ploy to hide him pleading for her to stay.
He wasn’t saying it in a bad way, it was the only way he could say he wants her to stay as he would miss her especially after losing his true love Mariko. He would be alone in the village.
It was a short marriage forced by the authorities with each other in the presence of another loved one, but in the end, it seems that they became true friends who respected and understood each other. From now on, Fuji, who will shave her head and become a nun for the memorial service of her deceased husband and son, and will leave the mundane world and live the rest of her life only in the nunnery temple, will never see Anjin again. However, the fact that they were able to find hope in the midst of a harsh fate is the only salvation for these two people.
Honestly, more the end of a business relationship - although even that's far from accurate. A Consort a title specifically to the legal wife of a lord, but it's more rooted in duty, service, and politics than anything romantic. At least that's how it typically goes when political marriages are the norm.
Usami no Fuji is, in my mind, the only character in the series who leaves the stage on his/her terms. She is more free than any other character, including Toranaga. I think the writers of Shogun found a soft spot for her and decided that she should leave with her head held high. Moeka Hoshi's performance will always stay in my mind. Quiet strength and dignity in the face of adversity. I hope that she finds other roles where she will be able to give us great performances like this one.
@@einezcrespo2107 I think that the writers wanted to give Fuji some poetic justice after all that she had been through. They also wanted to give the viewers one happy ending in a series where many men and women are either killed or commit suicide. Outside of Mariko and a few others, the women who die in this series are all innocent victims. Fuji had several chances to die before she came to serve the Anjin and she did not take them. I believe that a woman of that era would have chosen the security of a household, even if that meant marrying the Anjin, over the monastery. In those days, life in a buddhist monastery meant a change of name, shaving your head bald, spending hours in prayer and always begging for alms from the local population. It could not have been an easy transition for a woman, especially one coming from the same social class as Fuji.
@@vintibo Agreed... This has been a rather ' dark ' production throughout... I have a theory... There has been so much love for Fujiko shown in so many YT channels, and elsewhere... I believe this is extra, as there is nobody else in the scene, and so it was easy to make the production... Fujiko is such a sweet character, and we are all happy for her....
I would like to conclude with a historical story. Miura Anjin then served as a military adviser to Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) in the major wars of the Osaka Winter and Summer, and was used as a HATAMOTO until the death of Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) in 1616. He remarried the daughter of a local magnate near Edo Castle and had one son and one daughter. After the death of Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga), he was shunned by his successor, Tokugawa Hidetada, and Anjin's later years were unfortunate. Although he had several chances to return to England, he declined to return due to a conflict with the captain of a British ship that came to Japan. In 1620, in Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture, Anjin died of illness. And it is unclear whether a woman like Fuji actually existed or not, since there are no historical records left. And no one will know whether Anjin actually stayed in Japan of his own will "as a samurai" until his death, or whether he continued to have hopes of returning to England.
Shunned is a big word. "Not that interested in him" is more appropriate but Hidetada still treated him with respect and favored him even though he was growing more distrustful of christians overall.

Why is everyone convinced that Fuji is still going to become a nun? She was going to be a nun to be near her family's remains in the temple. Wasn't the whole point of the boat scene that Fuji can now choose to stay in the village by the sea, and still be close to her family? I thought it a was hail mary move by Blackthorne to get her to stay.
Her fate in the book is vastly different where Toranaga grants her wish to end her life. Fuji or Fujiko in the novel did her duty to Toranaga, her late husband and only child. Blackthorne is implied to marry someone else.
I dont know if it was a hail mary move by Blackthorne or just him being kind. but the whole boat scene with both them of letting go of their loved ones. The way it was shot/edited. To me atleast, implies she probalky chosses to stay around blackthone, instead of becoming a nun. best comparsion would be like in LOTR :return of the king where Faramir and Éowyn share glanses and you know something is gonna happen between those to in the future.
I think you got it backward that the family's temple the traditional resting place would be in a different place than a full fledged temple where she would go to be a nun and she was conflicted. When Blackthorne came up with a burial at sea ideal so she could just look at the ocean to be near her husband and child.
Is it not implied that Fuji may remain in the village close to the sea? I thought the whole scene on the boat was about Blackthorne trying to convince Fuji to stay.
In the book it is implied John marries Kiku. It does somehow fit since William Adam's Japanese wife was a commoner and a daughter of a highway official.
I honestly get a little cheery but sad when Fuji simply says “yes” to him. It’s like she is slowly learning English or Portuguese and can understand if he speaks it.
Somehow this was the most heartbreaking scene in the show for me. After everything that happens, you think "at least he's home with Fuji-sama now". 😭 I really wish she would have stayed. I think they would have been happy with the deep care and respect they had for each other, even if it wasn't love.
I haven't read the book, but I certainly didn't take it that way in the series, especially after she appears to make peace in letting the remains of her family go. Additionally, the characters in the show (and book) are generally built around the experiences of real people. Becoming a Buddhist nun, perhaps most famously in the case of Lady Sen, was certainly a realistic path considering her situation.
This scene brought me to tears...he lost Mariko, the woman he loved, he lost his ship and now he's losing Fuji, his consort. And though there was no chemistry between the two, he liked and respected her. She's a badass! And now she's leaving. 😟
If I remember correctly, in the book, she jumped off of a bridge, had permission to do so. She spoke to a watching soldier to tell Blackthorne that it was an accident.
@@BeeOppresion I still would recommend getting the book. Most of what was seen in both the 80's and current versions are faithful to the novel with some variant dramatic license. It's one of my favorite books.
I honestly can't fault the acting, the clothes are such a beautiful recreation of the time, and the story of the 2024 version skipped by the 1980's of the Spanish pilot and heavy religion that was mostly gone from this. My only gripe was the ending and nothing how Tokugawa Ieyasu became shogun and the taking of heads, also as if they ran out of money. If i was to give this out of 10, then without doubt it would be a solid 8.5 out of 10
It was the moment John lost everything that reminded him of the very short period of time he experienced peace & love with Mariko. 💔 he should have died with her in the explosion. 🥺
this was my one complaint of the finale. I’m not a fan of Fuji becoming a nun. Id like to have seen her remain his consort. I believe that would be true to history as well.
I think based on Blackthorn's Western civilities that it was somewhat out of character for him to try to "order" her to stay. I feel it would have been much more likely that he would clearly "ask" her to stay thus elevating her and demonstrating both regard and respect. I realize that some of us may feel that his newly acquired Japanese nature would call for the "order", but I think it feels unnatural coming from Blackthorn. I wish that he had asked her politely to stay and that she would have politely declined, perhaps followed by some small emotional token from both of them.
Given the context of this scene and the grief Blackthorne is experiencing, wanting Fuji to stay is not really because he wants her as her "consort" per se, but more of needing a friend. Because Mariko is dead, all he really has in his home is Fuji who can understand what he's going through despite the language barrier. So it would be natural for him to wanting her to stay so he won't feel lonely. But he did show her the idea of a sea burial for her husband and son, as a token of his gratitude.
It's about giving her an 'out.' If she was in any way being pressured to go to the monastery, she could use his order to trump that. Once she made clear that this was her decision, he accepted it.
The show's most charming character together with the weakest. For the life of me, I will never get over how badly they treated Anjin in the costume department - so drab and featureless. Though it is of a piece with the disrespect with which they treat him as a character.
Does somebody here speak Japanese? I often hear the affix “…masyry”, when actors speak but I don’t hear this in talks of modern Japanese people, usually just “-mas”. Is it because the actors spoke the old version of Japanese or what? Or is it my imagination…? I’m just asking, I don’t speak Japanese on any level…
I am Japanese. The way it is said in the drama is from the 1600s. In modern times, Gozaimasu is used as a polite word when serving customers, but Gozaimasuru is not used at the end. If you talk like that, you'll be laughed at (lol)
I am Japanese. If you are talking about "masuru", you are correct. "Masuru" is the old version of "masu". We don't use "masuru" anymore. We might use it jokingly in conversations with friends.

real anjin married a local japanese woman, and had two kids with her- he didnt have a love affair with Akechis daughter or got a "wife" by anyone.
Its been a while since i watched the 1980's version but Fuji or her equivalent hooks up with one of his samurai and requested his permission to marry; which he did he was mourning Mariko and was not really interested in anything
That was Omi-san and the willow world chick.
At the nunnery she will rekindle her fascination with fire arms and become a legendary gun fighter.
Mariko was great, but Fuji was my favourite from the start. It would be awesome if she sailed up as the primary female protagonist.
Yes, I have been commenting, almost from episode 1, that they should have switched the actors around for Mariko and Fujiko... Anna Sawai would have been a good ' Ice Maiden ' Fujiko, and Moeka Hoshi would have made a fantastic Mariko... I'm sure that Cosmo Jarvis would have had more interaction, if Moeka Hoshi had been in the leading lady role... Just my opinion...
@@richardruff8712 Another way to look at it is the "Game of Thrones" slow cooking switcharoo. They did kill Mariko off after all and reintroduced Fuji right after. IDK, I only know what I've seen so far. If The roles had been reversed, our favourite would be dead now.
@@QualeQualeson Yes, agreed......But, at least, for 9 episodes, we would have had regular, major appearance of Fujiko/Mariko for us all to admire and enjoy this delightful lady... ( if that makes sense )
@@DrJhengsman Well that does make sense. Sad though it is.
Anjin sama fumble the ball so hard
So happy she was able to find some sense of peace in all th tragedy.
I know she probably didn't actually exist, but I do hope she kept the gun.
Fuji has such an understated beauty
RIP to John's pillowing days...
In the book another woman was assigned to him.
He gets another wife.
No, he was taking her to the covenant. @@KK-fi6ms
藤様は可憐で綺麗だなぁ❣❣✨✨
I honestly get a little cheery but sad when Fuji simply says “yes” to him. It’s like she is slowly learning English or Portuguese and can understand if he speaks it.
Somehow this was the most heartbreaking scene in the show for me. After everything that happens, you think "at least he's home with Fuji-sama now". 😭 I really wish she would have stayed. I think they would have been happy with the deep care and respect they had for each other, even if it wasn't love.
Fuji sama cute ❤
Adorable.

William Adams, the historical basis for 'blackthorne' was married, sent his wife money, and wrote her letters, which are still preserved.
the only scene i heard Fujisama speaks English
"Presense is felt most keenly in absence."
I liked Fuji, the ‘Healthy and strong’ made me laugh, the ‘No Translator’ had quite the opposite effect. Great scene.
I like how Blackthorne is also using watakushi like the women :)
Like foreigners who learn japanese from a woman? lol
@@kansairobot2015
Exactly :). It was well portrayed
Yeah, I've noticed that small detail. Love it. : )
I was thinking about how and what they're teaching him, given that he's mostly learning from women 😂
When two introverts are left alone
I wanted them to stay together, but i like this outcome
The moment fuji appears in the final episode i immediately scream " fuji samaaaaa my waifuuuuu" lollol
He says 'I order it' because no one has been making requests of him this whole time so he'd never learn the words.
I hope Fuji will appear in season 2 as well.
Well at least he didn't get dumped by SMS.
Oh boy! If only you guys knew what she meant by "becoming a nun".
Fuji sama, best girl.

I like to think that Blackthorne would've visited her at her temple, only to be unable to recognize her without her hair.
I think she would smile to see him, and if he saw that smile, he would know.
I always assumed, even when I read the book, that her “becoming a nun” was an excuse for her to not tell John about her committing suic*de.
part of me wanted to ship them together but knowing her family that just wouldn't make sense... her perserverance is admirable
alguien sabe el nombre del soundtrack que aparece en el minuto 0:30
"Anjin-sama"😂😂😂
If I remember correctly, in the book, she jumped off of a bridge, had permission to do so. She spoke to a watching soldier to tell Blackthorne that it was an accident.
Welp... I was about to buy the book but my poor heart can't take that 😢
No she didn't jump off a bridge. It's not known how she ended her life. James Clavell left that open ended.
@@BeeOppresion I still would recommend getting the book. Most of what was seen in both the 80's and current versions are faithful to the novel with some variant dramatic license. It's one of my favorite books.
In the book Fuji arranges a capable, beautiful and strong samurai woman for a wife and Kiku as consort.
Fuji dying in the next episode while going to the convent will be hard to take
So sorry... No more episodes.... Finished now...
Ambushed by bandits... such a tragedy.
Best nun, more like best girl
I honestly can't fault the acting, the clothes are such a beautiful recreation of the time, and the story of the 2024 version skipped by the 1980's of the Spanish pilot and heavy religion that was mostly gone from this. My only gripe was the ending and nothing how Tokugawa Ieyasu became shogun and the taking of heads, also as if they ran out of money. If i was to give this out of 10, then without doubt it would be a solid 8.5 out of 10
These two are the most wholesome together. I really feel like they're bros.
Could someone please tell me what the tune at the end of the clip is called?
I kinda wanted them to uh.....you know...."one for the road".

I kind of wanted them to uh..."one for the road". I mean, she's not a Nun yet.
"How about that butthole for old times sake?"
His japanese got pretty good for a foreigner. Its an insanely complex language
It was the moment John lost everything that reminded him of the very short period of time he experienced peace & love with Mariko. 💔 he should have died with her in the explosion. 🥺
Fave character in the show!
Best girl ❤️
this was my one complaint of the finale. I’m not a fan of Fuji becoming a nun. Id like to have seen her remain his consort. I believe that would be true to history as well.
Fuji-sama deserved a good pillowing before starting her journey to become a nun.
why did they use the term ama and not miko if the translation was suppose to be nun?
She's going to be a Buddhist nun; a miko is a Shinto shine priestess. Different religion.
❤
It makes sense given both his limited vocabulary, and to show how desperately he wants her to stay. Fuji's affectionate smile says she understands.
The show's most charming character together with the weakest. For the life of me, I will never get over how badly they treated Anjin in the costume department - so drab and featureless. Though it is of a piece with the disrespect with which they treat him as a character.
Blackthorn was one of the most lovable characters, Cosmo did a phenomenal job with him, and he was relegated to a side character. It’s a shame.
Doesn't she love him?
The whole world let her baby be killed. Just can’t.
From Best Waifu to Best Nun

You should all read the book. It’s fantastic. And Fuji even gets her wish to commit Seppuku in the end. They made it more pleasant ending for the TV show 😂😂
Sorry but this movie is far from Clavell's work that it's an act of vandalism. I am perpetually amazed by how much movie goers are either ignorant of the original material and willing to accept whatever a less talented screen writer will put out over the author.
