She is a snake. They used a python brought in from the wild to play the part. Had to have his lines read to him in Portugese. Deserves an Oscar really. A boy snae playing a Japanese woman. Walkinh human and all. You can see his tongue slide a few times. They CGI'd the faceon.
Lady Ochiba (Ruri) is so brilliant as a character. Her use of manipulation is in the way she talks and she gives off the impression that she is clearly playing the game of chess in politics. The actress just nailed it!
i was gonna say the same. I looked her up in Wiki and found she has won acclaimed awards including one of the four international film festivals' awards for young actress. she needs more recognition imo.
She also played Yodo dono, of which Ochiba no kata is based on IRL, in Taiga drama 10 years ago. But that one wasn’t focused on the Time period Yodo dono was active in history so she wasn’t able to display her full potential yet
Due to the challenges of her life Lady Ochiba isn"t behaving like a human being anymore, but has turned more akin to a vengeful spirit yokai. Which is wonderfully captured by the unnerving way the actress performs in her role.
She reminds me of Lady Kaeda from 'Ran', except Kaeda was on a long game to bring down House Ichimongi; she succeeeded but it was still a shock when Gen. Kurogane beheaded her.
In the book her solution was VERY simple. She stumbled about a peasant in the woods one night and came out pregnant the next morning. And she hates Toranaga, because he might have witnessed it. If I remember right, it was left open in the books, how much Toranaga actually saw or knew, but considering he knows practically everything, I go with "He knows that the heir is not the late Taikos son."
@@Mer_Bel_00Well they keep saying he has no heir even though he'd been trying with over 100 women, and there is never a mention of him having a daughter. I think it's safe to assume the Taiko was shooting blanks, Ochiba just got herself pregnant by some random guy and probably had him killed once she knew it worked.
Toranaga was certainly intelligent enough that a man that was unable to father a child with a wife and hundreds of consorts was probably sterile. Ochiba was just lucky that the peasant impregnated her with a son and not a daughter.
@KASDNLQUR oh don't worry, I was just gonna do the quote but in English! Believe me, I've heard the horror stories of people getting tattoos in languages they're unfamiliar with
In real life both she and her son are tricked by a truce, then sieged by Tokugawa/Toronaga again, and then forced to commit sudoku lol. They are literally no match for the cunning of Tokugawa. Just a much less experienced mother desperate to protect her son from a warlord that wants to be Shogun.
This show is a masterpiece. If it keeps this standard, it will be seen as one of the best shows ever made. The script, acting, story, cinematography, character depth. Has everything. The brothel scene, the Noh scene, this scene. You can see that so much thought and care has gone in to every shot.
The Taiko was probably sterile. So she got pregnant by someone else and claimed it was his son. I have to wonder if the kid's real father is Toronaga. It would explain why she wants him dead.
Well, the book Shogun by James Clavell describes the events exactly that way, Taiko could not have a clild, so Ochiba solved the problem behind his back.
Just I thought / read forgot from where… was a long time ago; she did not used drugs; she was drugged by the main wife of the taiko ; so they could replace the taiko by a peasant similar looking in appearance so they could pass the child as the taiko son, the taiko could not have son but at that time it was always the women fault. So she was drugged and made to sleep with someone until she had a son.
The historical figure that Lady Ochiba is based on has an unbelievable life, even more tragic and epic than Mariko's. I wish they will get into it more in the coming season.
To be honest with you. I don't think Ishido and the others would've done what's best to ensure Taiko Jr. would ascend to power. If they had managed to bump Toranaga off, then things would've eventually went south between the remaining Regents.

Cersei's father was the monarch's advisor Ochiba is the daughter of the ex-ruler, it's quite different plus ... she is a consort of an ex-regent (Taiko) and the mother of the heir she has the rightful power to claim from the start, if you want to compare ... she should be Daenerys.

The definition of cunning and poison. A snake 🐍
The coat really adds to it also, good eye
Every movement and word delicately precalculated.
She gives off that female/gender bender Orochimaru vibe

How is she the same actress that portrayed an introvert female lead in the show Eye Love You, her acting range is incredible.

I think there's some passages from Toranaga's POV that indicate he's not 100% sure
That would be the only solution. If the man is infertile, no amount of herbs the woman takes would make a difference. This show is full of nonsense.
It was a lesson for Ishido to take control instead of letting fate/bureaucracy decide
I think she had plans for Ishido...
and in the last scene he does... by outright murdering one of the regents
How is she so sexy, graceful, and so very scary at the same time
like handling a colorful venomous snake.
she is frikken terrifying.
Not she, the Wife of the Taiko used the drugs...in the novel, Ochiba sleeps with a peasant, and she hates Toranaga, because he seems to know.
The novel is full of harem fantasies and vulgar sexual fantasies. Is the author British-American?🤨
Really?? That means that the Taiko's son and heir is not really his biological son!

I also understood this way. This series does not follow the book entirely, I believe.
He was from the Nagasaki Province, all the nuke matter made him sterile.
If the heir was his son, Toronaga wouldn't have claimed the throne for himself tho...
