This scene really set the tone I would like to see a documentary on this culture more ppl just committing suicide and no way would I surrender my baby they would have a had to kill me to
In truth it wasn't that dramatic, people committed suicide, yes, but it wasn't all about honor, all this samurai mythology came at the end of their era, almost EVERYTHING is more a political thing. In fact, there was a whole culture of paying other samurai when they were losing a battle so as not to die. Honor ends when the fear of losing your life arrives.
That's easy to say in an individualistic society, try that in a collectivist society where you need everyone and anyone just to survive another day and you'll understand. The reason why this shit happened is because of the very philosophy that the Japanese had at the time. In other areas of the world, you can ask for sanctuary and forgiveness even amongst your enemies. Showing magnanimity is a power move and even Julius Caesar did that a lot. With religions like Christianity and Islam spreading it's values and gaining enough traction to influence both state and individual, it's generally viewed as superior to forgive and save another life rather than remove the scum. When your legitimacy relies on the grace of a God that asks you to be as lenient as much as possible, It is easy to see why. To the Japanese, leniency is only afforded when necessary if possible remove it. The Japanese had a do or die mentality due to their geographical location. It also doesn't help that they were extremely resource starved. To them back then and even now, the game is to be as shrewd as possible. You need to reach as high in the sky as you can because to them you have limited resources, and only had one chance. Not one single grain of rice must be wasted, not one opportunity lost because there's more who needs that koku of rice and they need their chance as well. If you consider their outlook, you can start to figure out why they do the things they do. Why they are prone to commiting suicide because they failed and entrance exam, why they would rather cut ties and leave home after losing a job. Even this situation on the screen, you can be sure that the lord might prefer that kid to be alive, but keeping that man's family alive can be seen as weakness. It's political suicide, he needs to show his bottom line or be abused by others for "Weakness". Worse is that he'll lose face which is not going to be a good situation as it's very had to recover.
For such an advanced society, you would think they would have found a way to change purpose in life without seppukku or someone telling them to. And she was lucky to only have one child, if the punishment was to end a bloodline imagine the sheer horror of having multiple children in the face of that!
Imagine growing up in a world where youre a second class citizen, sold to a man to be his wife, his property and you dont get a say (even the few that do usually just gaslight themselves to cope) and then having sex, its expected so consent isnt really a thing, and usually its never a pleasent experience for the wife because there is no sex ed or a desire for men to please their wives, getting pregnant, going through child birth, back then there wasnt much in the way of pain relief and chances of dying were pretty high and youre lowkey told to just shut up and deal with it and then immediately get ready to go through that all over again. The only good thing to come out of that is your child, because the husband doesnt really do much with the child when theyre young or female, so that child is the only thing in the world that is yours and that sees you as safety and home and then that child is taken away from you. Your whole life, all that pain, suffering, that was the only good thing you got and it was taken away. I would axe myself too.
Well, you have to compare the same period. You cannot compare 16th century Japan with 21st century Europe. There were plenty barbaric things in Europe/USA. For example, massive slave trade of Africa. I just saw the clip leading up to this. So bro's master was getting insulted in a council session, and he spoke up in defence of his master, but it ended up making his master look bad. At which point he begged for permission to self-delete, and after a moment swore he'd also end his family line because it was such a grievous insult to his lord's honour. She was so cool but what they did to her was insane t.t
This honor above all stuff still exists Japanese culture, and it is nowhere near a positive attribute.
As an American living in Japan for over a decade, it is infinitely better over here than the chaos and selfishness the modern West wallows in.
Agree. What a brutal time to be a woman.
The ruthlessness existing in East Asia is gravely difficult to overcome.
Well, you have to compare the same period. You cannot compare 16th century Japan with 21st century Europe. There were plenty barbaric things in Europe/USA. For example, massive slave trade of Africa. Massive invasion and killing of native North and South Americans as well as Russia expansion of the East.
ruthlessness existed everywhere and still exists now.
@@Chemicalkinetics this was victorian era Japan and European culture in the victorian era were nowhere close to this brutal as the contemporary Japanese were even up until the end of ww2
@@truthseeker-nv6ny Consider the brutality unleased by White Europeans to Native Americans (both North and South) and Africans, tough to say the massacre of Native Americans and enslavement of Africans are less brutal. As this book/film has shown the Catholic church (Pope Alexander VI) and The 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas simply "divided" the world among Spain and Portugal, and that they have the church blessing to destroy and conqueror the world in the name of Christ. It is really tough to argue what is more arrogant and barbaric than the world belong to the Whites and they can do what they like.
@@Chemicalkinetics”massive slave trade in Africa”. Who sold the slaves? And who were the first countries to abolish slavery? Japanese still killed and wanted to rule non-Japanese like when they tried to invade Korea in 1592. Yeah, we know all cultures have good and bad in them. But it seems hollow when criticizing one aspect of a culture for someone to pull a “what about ism”. The comment wasn’t comparing to begin with…
_These_ are the Japanese that China knows.
Read Iris Chang’s “The rape of Nanking”. A compelling read of the atrocities committed by the japanese imperial army. Horrific and sad.
@@jayzrat Not excusing that but why are you skipping what chinese and koreans did to japan together with mongols?
Well chinese are not that innocent though.. especially toward non han chinese (toward nanman people, uighurs, tibetans, etc)
@@Cyan_Nightingale You're talking out of your ass, there is no Chinese ethnicity, it's a constant melting pot of all who came and settled. Anyone who ruled China knows the political/power game in succeeding the 'Chinese-style' ruling of Mandate of Heaven. That's why you don't see Mongol empire/Yuan Dynasty nor Qing nor Ming in denying the legitimacy of their predecessors.
You should read up on more history if you're gonna comment on shit like this, Nanman is a collectively term for what the ‘Civilized' Chinese for Southern Non-Civilized groups. Most of them have been assimilated and are barely any different from the majority 'Han' Chinese. (Mind you there is no PURE Chinese).
@@BoonieDutchman It's always been known that Feudal Japan was the instigator in raiding/pirating Korean/Chinese. China and Korea never considered Japan simply because they didn't think much of Japan nor its worth, besides it being a tributary state.
I’m glad they didn’t do a house of the dragon style where we basically experience it….this was so sad
Damn Fuji should have marry me instead,.
You're gonna have to go through me first brother
Hey can you at least show the subtitles better

Context? Havent seen the show
I just saw the clip leading up to this. So bro's master was getting insulted in a council session, and he spoke up in defence of his master, but it ended up making his master look bad. At which point he begged for permission to self-delete, and after a moment swore he'd also end his family line because it was such a grievous insult to his lord's honour.
That's his infant son, and his wife doesn't want it to happen. The woman without the baby is the daughter (I think?) of the Lord that guy serves, whose permission he asked to delete himself and his son.
Did she delete herself with her son or no? The captions being blocked by the subscribe button is making life difficult
No she survived but the child and father were put to death after this scene happened. @@AC-iz7eh
@@AC-iz7eh Uh, as far as I interpreted it (because I haven't seen the show) the noblewoman said to let the mother be the last to hold the baby's hand...presumably as the father does what he volunteered to do to bring honour back to his family name...by ending it...
@@AC-iz7eh husband and baby got deleted. she was told to live on.
Sure would be nice to be able to read the captions.
these people love drama
I can’t read the script because it’s covered with text anybody know what’s going on?
Did they have to use the cutest baby they could find? That feels extra.
My whole thing is if she unalived herself what is he gonna do?!? Chase her into the afterlife ?? Lets be so for real.
These peiple are cray cray
I must admit I couldn't stop looking at the adorable baby. I have no idea what's going on in the movie, but I think she threatened suicide. If I'm wrong, then that just proves how cute he is! Many netizens agree. I literally clicked this short because it's the cutest baby I've ever seen - apart from my little girl. Yes admit I'm biased. Guilty as charged.😂❤
I would have died with my infant. Idc who ordered me to live and how that act might look, id refuse to live without my baby. Life would be meaningless and no amount of honor or obligation would change that
Bro... 😭

Yeah I wanted to start watching this show and this shit ruined it for me. Just had a son and couldn't watch a show like this.
Child be like : WTF is going onnn😮😮
Where can I watch this?????
This movie or I will ancient Japan didn’t value life at all .how can you kill an innocent child because of his father’s loyalty.
They absolutely valued life. They also valued honor and traditions and respect its easy to sit and critique when you dont understand something
Now the bastard must be afraid for hurting the baby.
