@@antknees I didn't get sleep token until I saw that drumeo interview, I regret to say. It clicked instantly. Gospel chops are all about following the singer which is what II does so beautifully it's crazy. He said probably 90% of the time he's weaving around the vocals. Very odd for a metal drummer, but those linear grooves need to find their way into more metal. So fucking cool.

II, the drummer of Sleep Token, said himself that he takes lots of inspiration from Gospel drummers! Pretty interesting to see it come somewhat full circle!

Gospel drummers and bassists have the most INSANE pockets. I've been playing drums for 8 years and I have a pretty tight pocket, but I'm always blown away by gospel musicians. They are on a different level entirely.
This is fantastic. Gospel musicians are so fun to watch when you can tell they enjoy the track they're playing. Their musicality/chops are, of course, off the charts. But it is the joy they can play with that is so fun to watch!
Sleep Token are from the UK. Gospel isn’t really a big thing here or at least I wasn’t too familiar with it. But I learned of it through their drummer, II (two). He says that he is inspired by gospel drummers and particularly Eric Moore. Well damn, I need to hear this stuff, if that inspires him. So I have been going down the rabbit hole as a result. The drumming is incredible and I love the playing here. I love finding a new type of music with so much history. Any recommendations from those familiar are well and truly welcomed.
@@azhaz578 I'm sure there are. That's why I said it was probably me. I'm in Scotland, where only about 1.5% of the population is black. That's about 60k people in the whole country. No one here is particularly religious either. Including the few black people I know that are my age.

Amazing job! These two absolutely nailed their version of this song and I found myself listening to this cover far too many times. You can really see how II took inspiration from gospel drummers. From the complex chops, finessed delayed timing (I don't know what else to call it), complex fills and just sitting in the pocket with the bassist.

I learned something recently because I used to be a Christian too, and I am a musician and music lover. Don’t ever let being a Christian hinder you, or your taste in music, if you like a band don’t avoid it, I missed a lot of great music growing up because I was scared of what people might think. most don’t care and the few that do usually aren’t worth keeping. Never feel shame for liking things.
I know ve the concept and everything about this and the concept that you guys are doing and the inspiration your getting it from. You guys inspire me to do what you guys and doing make music. Keep doing a good job and keeping up the hard work you're an inspiration to me and everyone else
First time hearing these two, absolutely PHENOMENAL gentlemen!!! Sleep token is not easy, but this drum and bass was incredible! It’s funny, Sleep Token did admit that Gospel was a major influence of theirs.
Drummin in the bionicle crocs though! When I first got into sleep token I was convinced ii was black cause of his chops/style but found out he is not just influenced by gospel drums. I’m a mixed drummer myself so took a deep dive 😂
