  • The hockey community was saddened to hear of the death of hockey player Timur Faizutdinov, a defenseman for Dynamo St. Petersburg’s junior team, only days after he was hit in the head with a hockey puck. He suffered a blunt force trauma to the side of his skull.
I wanted to cover this case more for educational purposes on the risks involved with certain head trauma and things to look out for. I do this in hopes of providing the community with additional information and educating on the importance of head injuries and prevention.
While the details of his injury are limited, his tragic death was likely secondary to head trauma. As I have discussed in my previous videos, in the case of head trauma, we want to rule out intracranial bleeds and fractures. In this case, I suspect that Timur suffered a bleed in his brain that resulted in increased brain pressure. Usually we try to mitigate this by decompressing the skull by taking a piece off to help the brain expand safely. In some cases however, the increase in pressure can be too severe and surgical interventions may not help.
Many will ask, what could have been done to prevent such an injury. This part is tricky, mainly because hockey players wear a lot of protective equipment. There are cases of unfortunate accidents in sports including death following head trauma, paralysis after a head into the boards injury and so forth. While contact based sports put an athlete at higher risk for a traumatic brain injury, merely being involved in a car accident or falling and hitting your head can cause similar outcomes.
The lesson here is that in certain sports, we do our best to mitigate the risks, understanding that there are some cases we may never be able to prevent. Yes we can ask players not to cross check heads, but this injury to the head was a perfect storm of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
My condolences go out to the Faizutdinov family and the hockey community. This injury will hit home to many.

New information has come out that Timur was likely hit in the carotid artery. My thoughts about this are below:
The carotid artery is the main blood vessel that supplies the brain. As it goes up it can divide into multiple branches. If we add that information into the mix, there are a few possibilities (I am just speculating).
The trauma of the puck to the carotid artery could have caused a rupture/tear in the artery resulting in massive blood loss internally. The other possibility is that that blunt for trauma could have resulted in a carotid artery dissection where the wall of the artery which is a seperation of the layers of the carotid artery. This causes decreased blood flow to the brain and can be extremely dangerous. The last mechanism of injury, if he wasn't hit directly in the artery could have been a fracture of the skull which severed the carotid artery higher up (this would be the least likely scenario).

I texted my sister about this since she’s a PA. She hasn’t seen the video of the injury but she said it could’ve been a skull fracture that compressed or punctured the artery.

Yea the first two mechanisms are likely the most plausible. Really sad fluke accident :( a skull fracture can sever the artery up higher, but the carotid artery would have already divided into their respective divisions.

As a hockey fan I was following that situation checking Reddit for good updates and I was hoping to read that Timur made a full recovery and I was absolutely heartbroken and and devastated to find that he passed away the hockey world was absolutely shocked and heartbroken to wake up to that news

@@REDKRAKEN18 I completely understand. From the outside, that hit didn't look as dangerous as it eventually turned out to be. We've seen athletes walk away from worse so this was a very sad case.

Thank you for shedding some light on this. I have been extremely affected by Timur’s death and I am devastated. All of hockey needs to change their helmets to include more shock absorbency and coverage! I do not want to hear of any more deaths because of not having enough protection.

I agree. This was a very sad story. The unfortunate part was, once more details were released, it seemed that the puck impacted the neck between the guard and the helmet. This is such a hard area to protect fully without limiting full neck range of motion.

    Great video, terrible tragedy

The other thing to consider that I didn't mention in the video is that the ear pieces tend to be the weak point of hockey helmets. This could have ultimately resulted in increased force and trauma to that area.

Apparently the father tweeted saying he was hit in the Carotid artery. I am not a medical professional all I know is how to put a bandaid on. With the carotid artery information, what happened?

@@Dee-0015 Thanks for that updated information.

Yes! They look extremely flimsy and don’t really cover much! I hope they can figure out a better way to cover the whole head and ears while allowing them to play effectively

Do ear shields protect players from this type of trauma? Absolutely must prevent this

    • @SonamMD
      @SonamMD  3 года назад +1

So ear shields will protect the area over the ear and distribute the force. Unfortunately, given that we now know that Timur was hit in the carotid artery, protecting that area of the upper neck is so hard. If we protect up the entire neck, we will significantly impact head range of motion which could be a danger in it self. His head was turned away from the puck which ultimately exposed the side of this neck to trauma. I really don't think much more could have been done in this scenario and it was a very unlikely accident to happen.
