      Humans/the consumer, is ultimately shallow, you looked like a dork...and while that might be puerile and rudimentary, it's also 100% true, people like what looks sleek and cool. Ala the Ray-bans with speakers, while bulky, still look like Ray-Bans. They need to find a way to make it look like aviators or anything currently in fashion.

      @@possiblyinsane6995hat price tag is way too high, at least with a new iPhone all it takes is for you to upgrade your contract so it's easy, that isn't an option for the vision. Also apparently the headset is heavy. I just don't see that thing catching on like the iwatch or earpods. Enthusiasts will like it, sure, but your average consumer wants light, easy and cheap.

      Apple has adjusted expectations with the $3500 Vision Pro. This would be a great opportunity with the stigma removed for Google to get back into this space. I just don't think the current leadership has the vision to take the risk now.

      With the Apple Vision Pro, especially the real world reviews by Casey Neistat, the strength of the form factor is back into focus.
      For AR, Google glass was infinitely better for interacting with those around you. A snow goggles form factor just isn't natural when you're outside of a ski resort.

    I have my grandsonś first steps on video, thanks to Glass. I video recorded my daughter's first fashion show on Google Glass. I used to make photo albums during my long car trips. I never had to stop the car and get out of the car to use my phone. Of course todayś cameras take better quality photos, but because of Glass, I at least have photos! This was a magical device for recording the pedestrian miracles of trivial lives! I have been searching for a replacement since my pair stopped working. Nothing even comes close when it comes to utility, form factor, ease of use, and comfort.

      @ThadStarner Месяц назад +1

      Many people report getting their baby's first steps with Glass. Glass was also the first time Google did computational photography on a camera - which is now common on smartphones. That was why Glass's camera was better than most of the smartphones of its day.

    • @AlanUnis
      @AlanUnis Месяц назад

      @ThadStarner I have been following start-ups in the smart glasses-AR space ever since the Google Glass Explorer program ended. Not a single product comes even close to Google Glass. They either over reach (Meta's Orion) or under reach (Brilliant's Frames). I know there is great potential in this area, but, for now, just bring Glass back. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. The technology is in a state of rapid development. But Glass successfully hit the mark more than a decade ago. We all buy tech that we expect to be obsolete in a year. But we settle for the imperfect and will buy next year's improved but imperfect device. I guess that Google owns all the patents but lacks the grumbah (Star Trek reference).

      I'm guessing a lot of the functionality such as moving pictures over, etc, were done so on a backend server that google was hosting, so they were paying to host and maintain a server for a depreciated product. The software wasn't 100% localized, it relied on google servers.

I still admire the idea and I still would love a pair and seeing the concept fade away was one of the biggest technological disappointments of my life. As someone with mild face blindness, I needed those glasses, and have been looking forward to something similar, with a camera for face recognition and a see-through display to see who I'm talking to, to no vail. Intel also had a project going but canceled it too. There's a limited amount of people whose faces I can remember and recognize with certainty and wearing Google Glass at all times woupd honestly been less awkward than my status quo, plus I loved the design and am hella excentric anyway.

  • @13thCP

    I still yearn for the days of glass! Although I wasn't able to get a pair until 2014-ish, it made my digital life so much easier and smoother. Google, IMHO, has gone backwards. Calls, video conferencing, pictures and videos of my kids and even texting was completely hands free. Being an IT Professional, this would be a game changer! I was able to snag an EE2 for almost nothing and will be doing some cool stuff (hopefully) with it and using it for some niche stuff at work and in my personal life. Thanks for the walk down memory lane! I think we don't have these now because they are so focused on getting the newest and greatest phones out. It's all about money and profits. Google would be stupid not to pick this back up and continue to work on it.

The other thing is I think there is a lot of latent financing of Kirigami research for prosthetic retinas, which would be enabled I surmise with geometric deep learning for all sorts of detection, such as processing better resolve, muon- or other standard particle detection, Wi-Fi signal-detection (see DensePose), and of course… Tik Tok, YT, Youku Tudou within the Cartesian theatre itself. thanks for the video, I really agree with all the points you make. I still own my original google glass explorer edition and did really enjoy using it (especially for stargazing!) - my friends and I were talking about the Apple goggles and it made me think how much less cumbersome the google glass seems by comparison. I can't imagine that it would be terribly hard for google to reboot this project and backend services but I don't know. My friends in the tech industry seem interested - imagine this thing with updated components at a more afforadable price point and a big national ad campaign just like you might do for the newest iPhone! I think society might now be ready for this kind of device which really was ahead of its time in a lot of ways. There were privacy concerns initially but now it seems commonplace for people to film practically everything they do with their phone so I think people will be less uncomfortable. Anyway, thanks again for the thoughtful video and cute photos of your kids!

    I really wish they were usable nowadays :( I got them used just months before they pulled the plug... Was fun while it lasted.
    It was truly ahead of its time, I hope a new product comes out like this in the future- or some way to revitalize it (like spoof google server?).

    Google (Alphabet) has no culture, it is a company with no visionary experience. Sundar Pichai is essentially an MBA who only focuses on Balance Sheets and Income Statements (that's all an MBA is, a course in Window Dressing).

    Google realized that this product would ruin its business with Android because everything that is done from a mobile phone could be done from here. I believe that this product had a very high potential and even more so now with artificial intelligence.

    You are right , Google with everything in its ecosystem can come up with comprehensive solution to facilitate real life.
    One that resonated with me, for instance, was my recent travel to another country.
    There could be headset including glasses to help you in real time translation , reading signs and boards or if you are looking at the art piece or monument. The info projected to your glass or read your earbuds.
    The usage is endless for these glass while give you independence from screen phone.

    Honestly I don't know it should be possible it's just all the companies capable of doing it are focused on the flashy Metaverse and not what needs to happen for internet 3.0... Which is a device for everyone at any price point. Which in Shadowrun you can walk into a convenance store and buy a dozen different kinds of device that don't look outlandish even by a decade ago standards to connect to the "matrix" aka Internet 3.0 we need that future not one where a single XR headset rules the world...

      There was a HUD app for driving that showed direction, speed, and altitude. The Google Assistant would show and speak directions. I went to New Orleans for the first time, picked up my rented car, and asked the Assistant to get me to a specific address. It worked like a charm.
