Hands down, the best analysis I've seen for Dragon Quest personalities. Finally locked in my party, ready to start my journey. Been eagerly awaiting this game since I finished DQ11 years ago. Cheers!
Great video, well done! I’d like to add another factor to consider regarding personality rankings: I created a chart converting the letter grades (H to SS) into numbers (1 to 10) and calculated the total for each personality. The highest totals are Vamp (37), Lucky Devil (36), and Lone Wolf (34) ex-aequo with Charmer and IronClad. On the other hand, Klutz, Lazybones, and Mule are at the bottom with 24 points. Regarding agility, while it's crucial for casters, I think it's worth mentioning the Meteorite Bracer accessory found in the underground of Ibis Castle. It doubles agility, allowing players to prioritize other personalities with lower agility and compensate using this equipment. Finally, based on my understanding of the game mechanics, aside from the Hero, players are encouraged to max out all classes for their companions to learn all skills and spells while boosting stats. So unless you’re planning to constantly change personalities after reclassing, it’s best to stick with all-rounders like Vamp, Lucky Devil, and Lone Wolf. After that, reclass your team into a full party of thieves (that will have all skills and spells) to farm seeds efficiently after battles, especially using the Whistle skill. This strategy keeps you versatile while optimizing late-game progression.
Want an OP Tank? I went Priest Mage Warrior Sage. On Priest go Genius. On Warrior go Tough Cookie (learn all abilities lvl47) and Sage is Genius. What do you get? A tanky Sage with a bunch of HP and MP as of right now she's at 600+ HP and 600+ mp with 300 str and 360 wis ☠️ she's stupidly broken no magic? DPS on the go. Speedy mage is really strong too because they have Kabuff which is a plus for a speedy mage and Oomph to boost your allies before they act.
I started my priest as a tough cookie and job changed to thief with bat out of hell after she learned kazing. You can coast most of the game witb it but i found its been fantastic. Plus its cool thinking of a priest going thief. Currently at my 4th orb ill give an update later how I proceed with her.
oh yeah definitely, that sounds like an amazing plan for a fast healer. Make sure to keep his wisdom high with some seeds to make sure u dont run out of MP too quickly.
I have finalized the build for my party, dukey03 recommended that instead of going from a mage to a thief to a martial artist I should swap the first 2, and I instantly realized that he was right. So for that character I am starting out as a lone wolf then equipping the specs to give her the wit personality for her stint as a mage before going back to lone wolf for a martial artist. I am making my merchant turned priest turned warrior into a lucky devil, and I am giving my gadabout turned sage turned monster wrangler the vamp personality simply because it's a nice balanced option. These characters will all have these personalities naturally thanks to a guide I found for using the starting seeds in the right way, so I won't have to worry about keeping certain items equipped all the time.
thanks for not being one of those "content creators" that just records and uploads gameplay with minimal editing. there's so much lazy content out there. its nice to have somebody actually talk about the game. lol
I've played hundreds of hours of Dragon Quest games but this is my first time playing 3 so many of these systems were unfamiliar. Your video explained most of my questions. It sounds like personality is about growth potential instead of a stat limiter so if I had 100% strength growth and change it to a class that has 90% growth that doesn't mean that my already obtained points get cut by 10%, it just means future points will be given 10% less right? I am now much more willing to experiment with personalities now I know changing it doesn't eat my previously earned stats. Thank you!
IMO, the best personality for Warrior is LAZYBONES. It gives a pretty sizable boost to Strength, Resilience, and Luck (all key stats) at the expense of both agility and wisdom. If you don't intend to go the Priest route with it, Lazybones is the best.
Interesting, yeah I could see that being a good option. Thanks for sharing. Now, im not a big fan because of the 70% growth rate in resilience. Which can make you very squishy. But it could be a solid option before you get a better book
@@whitewolf3051 I believe "Amazon" is now called "Bodybuilder" and "Valiant" I know is now "Paragon." Both are just giant strength boosts with not much else (+40% for Paragon and +30% for Bodybuilder). They both have a flat 100% modifier for Resilience and penalties in everything else. I would personally rather Lazybones's 115/120 rather than Pargon's 140/100 or Bodybuilder's 130/100, especially since the other two have a penalty to luck on top of that (Bodybuilder is 80% and Paragon is 70%).
I ended up getting the clown on my hero, but due to how many stat seeds we are given I just keep chucking them on the hero and the game play is just fine.
I’m shocked that Lone Wolf is so good… because I got it on my own Personality test. I may as well have gotten Lucky Devil for how much lined up perfectly for me in my playthrough.
I couldn’t get vamp to pop up for anyone. Even the female characters. I eventually gave up and settled. I started my hero with tough cookie, intending to make him the tank. Figure I’ll just dump all of the seeds of agi, wis and luck into him to try and offset the lack of growth. For some reason my thief is leveling a lot faster than the rest of the crew. Gave my Monster wrangler the whip you get for two mini medals and he’s shredding enemy groups. Rounded it out with a priest since I’m new to III and naturally cautious in jrpgs.
Even without those Thief/Merchant/Gadabout lv up faster then all the OTHER jobs classes but even with those at lv 50 it could still take 30+ hours of Liquid Metal slime farming with a full party TO hit lv 99 your better off trying to SOLO those slimes from lv 50 to lv 99 but don't use Puff/Be Dragon the LMS's tend to not stick around for the full 2 turns. Solo just killing one LMS gives you the full exp in this case 50,000 exp solo you just need the lv 48 Martial artist skill to kill them solo Hero can't really kill them without critical hits.
game8 website has a 'How to Change Party Personality with Seeds' page that shows what stats to give your new party members to get the personality you want. It's a bit of RNG so you might have to try a few times. To get Vamp for example you allocate: 2 Stamina, 1 Agility, 1 Wisdom, 1 Luck.
Paragon is definitely a decent option for physical attackers. Buuuuut, its multipliers for almost every other stat are kinda bad... It can be funny to just go full attack Bonk build tho. Just make sure to look up the hidden multipliers of the personalities before making a choice, I left some sourcea in the description. I hope you enjoyed the video!
@acwano most of the stats don't matter for physical attackers. MA and Warrior will always be slow and need stuff like Meteor Band or just be slow. Luck doesn't matter as crit chance is super low at level 81 with over 800 luck you only get 30% crit which Warrior can never reach as even getting to 999 with Gadabout and switching to Warrior no way Warrior ever gains over 400 luck leveling up. Luck has like a threshold depending on your level and if you are higher you get a small damage bonus and if you reclass at all you are basically guaranteed hitting that threshold. Defense on enemies has crazy scaling and Strength is the only way to overcome it so Strength is extremely important for any physical class. Game is very different from original and physical classes got mega nerfed. You need the best equipment with the highest strength possible to compete with spellcasters or Monster Wranglers. Especially before endgame Strength is super important.
Martial artists are not slow... they have a good agility growth, second to only the thief. Luck DOES matter, just not as much as some people think, so you're kinda right about that. Anyways, paragon is viable but definitely risky and not the most optimal choice in my opinion. But I think we just prioritise different things so its fine. Enjoy the rest of the game!
Honestly what was kinda funny I just answered the starting quiz honestly and the game told me I was a lone wolf. Again I didn’t know ANYTHING about the starting quiz personality determining stat boosts. Imagine a personality quiz rewarding you for just being honest to yourself.
So, apparently turns out you *need* to reach a certain Luck threshold or your physical damage is not just unbuffed, but actually nerfed. And that threshold increases with every level you gain. So you may actually do less physical damage at level 60 than you did at level 50, even though your strength did go up. Tl;Dr : All personalities that reduce your luck are toast for physical attackers. Lone wolf is dead, Tough Cookie is dead, the warrior class *needs* the lucky devil personality if you intend to take it to high levels, since it has very low innate luck growth it's the only personality that can compensate. For everyone else, Vamp is pretty much still king. Or queen, I guess.
Vamp is the best yes, I have it on everyone. Tough cookie is far from dead, but I do agree that I dont like the low luck. Its good if you want a tank supportive party member tho, not all warriors want to do dmg. Like the priest-warrior. Thanks for the sharing the info here! I learned about that while making research for todays video, and its very interesting. Lucky devil might be one of the best in the game, with vamp and genius/wit for (spell casters)
@acwano Yeah I used some harsh words, also I do have to nuance that all this talk of stats this will ultimately not matter that much for people who don't care about the postgame and intend to stop after defeating the regular final boss !
No worries man, I love hearing about different perspectives. Im starting the post-game soon, havent had much time to play with making videos and college.
This been a very helpful guide. Does open my mind that you want to use the most balanced personalities to raise each class. Heck, I made the mistake in the past using certain strength personalities like Meathead on physical classes, but they lower too much on other stats you need. Also, it is good to know when you are changing classes or what a class was previously depending on spells/skills. Right now I will be changing a Mage to a warrior. Thinking of having Lone Wolf (skull ring) to keep wisdom up or Ironclad to keep it balanced. Not sure of tough cookie. Does anyone have a suggestion?
Yup, if you want balanced stats, ironclad is better than tough cookie for a tankier build. Lone wolf is also solid, but the low luck could hurt someone like Martial artist so keep that in mind.
I said in the video that I'll leave some sources in the description. One source gives you the multipliers for every personality and the other even compares them with the old remake.
Show off is a a solid choice for an all-rounder, just not in the top 3. It gives +10% in 3 stats but also -10% growth rate in 2 stats (stamina and luck). So not that crazy, only an overall 10% boost (cuz +30% -20% total). If you watched the part where I talk about descriptions being a scam, some personalities look like they have no drawback but actually have some hidden multipliers. I wish the game told you about this.
Stat growth is the same yeah, but initial stats at lvl 1 are different for men and women. Not a big diff tho. Armor could make a difference in the long run yeah.
The best personality for the merchant are Idealist, Lone Wolf and Drudge. Idealist because High STR and RES stats for durability and boosted stats matches Merchant's needs .
it depends on the skills, I noticed that some of them do and some of them dont. In this remake, all spells scale with wisdom and abilities scale either with strength, with smth else (like friendly monster count) or have a preset dmg.
Going by the guide book for the GBC version of DQ III, Amazon was the choice for female warrior, valiant for male warrior. Don't know what HD 2D Remake equivalent of those personalities are, or is considering that vamp covers lewd as well as sexy, which were for male and female respectively.
Keep in mind that some personalities have had their multipliers changed. Look up the differences between versions here: www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/comments/1gqgheh/dq3_hd2d_new_personalities_and_other_things_ive/ . Its translated info coming from japanese forums.
Are these stat multipliers correct then? I'm seeing different bonuses on this one website. Just wonder which are correct. Edit: Half tempted to just slap Vamp on and call it a day. I got 3 books atm and I can get more fairly easily.
@@RetroFanatic-Trapster2 Vamp is by far the best persobality. Slam it on every female party member honestly, if u dont wanna complicates things. These multipliers are correct, the ones u saw might be the ones from the old version of the game. There is a source in the description that shows the differences betweem this remake and the old one.
Nope, unless its a drastic change. Also, you can see that a lot of these personalities are top 3 for a LOT of classes. So if you see that a personality is good and can work for both, you dont need to change personalities after job change.
Nope, all vamp works just well honestly. only downside I could see is there is better options for a tank, like tough cookie and ironclad, in case you want a tanky healer or just a tank sub-dps warrior. Both work for the latter but if you want a tank that uses spells, ironclad is a lot better because of its good wisdom growth compared to tough cookie.
Really appreciating the effort here, most sites were putting the math for each base stat growth and the personality stat growth without the interactions, now is way clearer.
I want to change my monster wrangler(lone wolf) to martial artist after getting all the abilities, so what personality would you recommend or the one in this video is fine?
The ones in the video are the best. MW and MA share the same best personalities. except in the early game where MA wants more luck but you dont wanna play MA too early anyways.
Kind of since in every single DQ game that HAS job classes some skills are limited to the actual party members so while they can for the job classes the skills the Hero learns in any version of DQ3 NONE of the job classes the others can use any learn those.
I would go vamp on the hero to be able to do anything and everything. But you need to be female hero (or body type B). if u want male hero, go lone wolf.
Hey therse 1 thing im not sure about hope any one here can help if my chracter started wiht a personalaty like lone wolfe and i lvld him too lets say 10 and then change his personalaty too lets say vamp do the stats move around or does it only influnces the future lvls? ^^
I don't actually think Vamp is the best personality for every vocation. Not every vocation uses every stat, so there are quite a few that benefit more from other personalities. Based on my calculations, Tough Cookie is generally the best personality for physical classes, while lone wolf is the best for magical classes. The obvious exception is Hero, which is a true all around class.
Vamp. Period. Next topic. No seriously, my Mage in HD 2D is better than the one from my Switch version of the mobile version. And the only change was Vamp, instead of Wit. My Thief has been having slight attack issues, but that's because of the weapon selection, and focus on speed above all else naturally. When she becomes a Warrior later, she'll be a block of Tungsten launched from a Canon, with how bulky, and fast she is. And my Priest has become a Sage, who can hit almost as strong as my Hero. And I've dumped ALL of my strength seeds on him.
Vamp isn't just the best anymore with the stat caps being increased. a Sage that was genius will hit much harder than a Sage that was vamp. You can also fix any holes in the stats with seeds and class swapping.

Hey, is there a document where we can see how to get each personality ?
I said in the video that I'll leave some sources in the description. One source gives you the multipliers for every personality and the other even compares them with the old remake.
I'm curious why not go with show off for the hero? show off raises some pretty good stats and as far as I know it doesn't have any drawbacks.
I made everyone Vamp because I plan on having everyone go through 3 classes and finish on Warrior / MA
If I pick a like a male thief or a female thief do they have the same stats? Will the gender exclusive armor make a difference?
Female characters generally have access to more equipment/accessories. Stat growth should be the same.
Stat growth is the same yeah, but initial stats at lvl 1 are different for men and women. Not a big diff tho. Armor could make a difference in the long run yeah.
The best personality for the merchant are Idealist, Lone Wolf and Drudge. Idealist because High STR and RES stats for durability and boosted stats matches Merchant's needs
.
Idealist and drudge are not that good honestly, their other multipliers are not that good. Lone wolf is very good tho, I agree.
Does strength really have any impact on skills? In the old dragon quest games the skills and spells all had pre set damage ranges. Has that changed?
it depends on the skills, I noticed that some of them do and some of them dont. In this remake, all spells scale with wisdom and abilities scale either with strength, with smth else (like friendly monster count) or have a preset dmg.
I think paragon is pretty dang good for warriors.
Its okay. before you get better it does the job. But its hidden multipliers are kinda bad. Ironclad or tough cookie are the best for warrior.
Look up the differences between versions here:
www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/comments/1gqgheh/dq3_hd2d_new_personalities_and_other_things_ive/ .
@@acwano Ah, game8. I was checking the english one.
Ya tough cookie monster wrangler is awesome.
Do i have to change personalities every job change?
Nope, unless its a drastic change. Also, you can see that a lot of these personalities are top 3 for a LOT of classes. So if you see that a personality is good and can work for both, you dont need to change personalities after job change.
are the books that change personalities in DQ3 HD2D remake one time use or can be use multiple times?
One time use sadly, but you can find multiple copies of the same book. I think I found the genius book twice in the very early game.
I have a question. Do you know what seed to get bat out of hell for my priest.
I think its 5 seeds in agility, but im not sure. Try that!
Best to make them all vamp? Any downsides?
Nope, all vamp works just well honestly. only downside I could see is there is better options for a tank, like tough cookie and ironclad, in case you want a tanky healer or just a tank sub-dps warrior. Both work for the latter but if you want a tank that uses spells, ironclad is a lot better because of its good wisdom growth compared to tough cookie.
DPS? Damage per second?
Indeed, its a term used to talk about damage output. A DPS is a character who's job is to simply do dmg.
Really appreciating the effort here, most sites were putting the math for each base stat growth and the personality stat growth without the interactions, now is way clearer.
I appreciate it! stay tuned for more content like this, im not done with dq3💪
Is it possible for a character to master every class and learn every skill?
Yes you can I learn the whole class abilities then change to a different one
Technically, yes!
Kind of since in every single DQ game that HAS job classes some skills are limited to the actual party members so while they can for the job classes the skills the Hero learns in any version of DQ3 NONE of the job classes the others can use any learn those.
You say that Lucky Devil is good for the Hero-- but from everywhere i looked there is no way to get it for the hero (not including accessory)
Yeah, it would be with the accessory. If you dont like that, you can just go with lone wolf or any other good personality for an all-rounder.
@ that’s what I did- lone wolf.
I beat the game with lone wolf MC, it worked pretty well for me dw!
So for my Hero would Tough Cookie be best for Draconian playthrough or Lucky Devil, Vamp, or Lone Wolf?
I would go vamp on the hero to be able to do anything and everything. But you need to be female hero (or body type B). if u want male hero, go lone wolf.
What seeds do I have to give Priest to give them bat out of hell?
all 5 in agility im pretty sure. But idk if its 100% chance.
Hey therse 1 thing im not sure about hope any one here can help if my chracter started wiht a personalaty like lone wolfe and i lvld him too lets say 10 and then change his personalaty too lets say vamp do the stats move around or does it only influnces the future lvls? ^^
it influences future growth! Hope the video helped.
@@acwano yas so much^^ i was wondering why im strugling if been using realy bad personalatys the whole time^^ keep up the good work
Will the personality will be changed when reclass?
@@amenomurakumo9428 Nope, personality is not affected by class changing whatsoever. I hope the video was helpful!
@@acwanoThx
No problem!
Yeah its more like its VERY good for every single one. I agree that its not necessarily the best
another great vidfeo alot of the books over lap thoe
Yup, the game intentionally gives you books for good personalities, because what would be the point otherwise. Good game design.
and here i am using Paragon on hero 😂
Paragon is not bad, definitely usable before you get better ones!
Better to change other classes into merchant.
I personally like having the merchant as a starter to help with money and service call in early dungeons. Then I just transition off.
Vamp.
Period.
