  • Video: An afternoon spotting trains at Westenhanger station situated on the South Eastern Main Line with High Speed 1 (CTRL) running alongside. The station is a very quiet one with hardly any passengers using it, so it meant I could move about with great ease, on top of that the views are great. With the Channel Tunnel only a few miles away from this location, Eurostar trains can be seen dropping and raising their pantograph to change the settings due to the extreme height of the overhead wires in the tunnel. There was a fair amount of traffic from both Southeastern and Eurostar services including a GBRf 66 freight move from Hornsey E.M.U.D. I had hoped to see it drag one of the few stored Thameslink 700s from Dollands Moor or one of the night Class 92 HS1 freight moves but unfortunately some of the slots were delayed or inactive.
    A few clips from Ashford International are at the start.
    TRAINS INCLUDED:
    Eurostar Class 373 TGV TMST e300s & Class 374 Velaro e320s, Southeastern Class 375 Electrostars & Class 395 Javelins & Class 465 Networkers and a GBRf Class 66.

    Is it me.. though does the Eurostar 373 at 6.10, front power car no photograph up.. any reason why?

      By Westenhanger station, Eurostar trains have to drop and raise the pantograph as a reset procedure before entering the Channel Tunnel because of the sheer height of the overhead wires in the tunnel.

      @@CHOO-CHOOPlane thanks for the reply, super train the 373, Shame that Eurostar have scaled back on them to replace them with the valeros. Excellent video!

      How will they get their power then if there is no raised pantograph?

    • @belgianrail1
      @belgianrail1 3 года назад +2

      They just coast until the pantograph raises again

  • @ererire1128

    do u know why the class 374 has so many pantographs

    • @belgianrail1
      @belgianrail1 3 года назад

      Because the 374 goes to different countries (France, Uk, Belgium, Netherlands) it needs different voltage so different pantographs lift up

      The 373 has multiple pantographs too they’re just all on the power cars so it’s less obvious

    Didn't know the pantographs went down when the train goes through a neutral section! Is that usual?

      @Sicilian Gecko But aren't the new Eurostar trains overhead wires only ? Wasn't that one of the issues with the weight of the kit etc on the 373?

      Kekeli A it depends on witch direction the Eurostar is going

      @@kianthetrainspotter7777 The Eurostars are changing from HS1 setup to Channel tunnel setup. There's a different's in height between the two wires due to the Eurotunnel trains.
