Serious Water Pressure - We are always looking at a new and improved version of a tool. Sometimes it is a new battery power tool with more power or an upgrade for more user protection. In this video and article, we take a look at a DEWALT 4200 PSI 4.0 GPM Direct Drive Pressure Washer that has been on the market for some time. This pressure washer has been built with quality products and it is meant to last.
We want to note that DEWALT makes this version with a direct drive pump or a belt-driven pump. As you get up in PSI, belt-driven pumps are more popular because the belt does not transfer the vibrations from the engine to the pump, allowing for longer pump life. Direct drive units, like the one in our video, are more popular with consumers due to then being less expensive and more compact.
The DEWALT 4200 PSI 4.0 GPM Direct Drive Pressure Washer is one of the most powerful models available at The Home Depot. DEWALT used an AAA triplex pump made by Comet on this unit and it allows for the user to adjust the pressure by turning a knob on the pump. We estimate the output to be from 2,800 PSI to 4,200 PSI. Along with that adjustment, the Honda GX390 engine has a working RPM range of 2,000 RPM to 3,600 RMP, allowing you to decrease the engine RPM to reduce pressure also.
These adjustments are awesome and allow this very powerful unit to be used in many different cleaning applications. If you are new to pressure washers, we recommend that you start slow and ramp up the pressure over time to save any destruction. With the 0 degree tip, one can write their name permanently in concrete at full power.

DEWALT Quality
When a company like DEWALT has its name on a product, they want it to be quality! Honda has a proven reputation for some of the best commercial engines on the market and the GX390 is an awesome engine with almost 12HP and 19 ft. lbs of torque. While there is no oil filter, it does allow for 1.16 quarts of oil and it is easily changed.
The AAA Triplex pump has ceramic coated pistons and a thermal relief valve to allow for water flow when the pump is not in use and the engine remains running. The oil level can be quickly checked through the sight glass on the rear of the pump. The oil should be changed with a 15W-40 oil every 200 hours. Хобби
I appreciate the demonstration and information. I decided to purchase it and it is everything you mentioned.
I bought it to pair with a 22" (3 nozzle rotary bar) General Pump HAMMERHEAD surface cleaner and it is a perfect match!!!
I also use it for soft washing and this machine allows me to shoot my solution up to appx. 35' to reach roofs and peaks without leaving the ground.
My philosophy is don't buy an 8/gpm machine for several thousand dollars unless you've got the big contracts like hotels and parking garages, etc., because it's overkill for residential. I've made $8,231 in 4 months with this machine and the surface cleaner. I bought a 100' of extra HP hose and a 100' of garden hose, 2 hose reels and mounted it (to a steel diamond-plated skid I fabricated) in the bed of my F-150.
Take care and God Bless. M. Meier

UPDATE:1 year and still cranks within the first 2-3 pulls. Probably will buy another when this one finally does bite the dust ruclips.net/user/postUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX . No issues at all. Very happy with it.UPDATE: After 6 months of use and over 70 uses I would still highly recommend this pressure washer. It does vibrate a decent amount but never had it “walk” like others have mentioned. No oil leaks, still seems to run like the day I bought it. Still cranks within 2-3 pulls every time. Very happy with my purchase!Have used it about a dozen times now. Plenty of power, cranks up on 1-2 pulls every time. My only complaint would be I wish it was a little taller to make it easier to walk with it (hits my ankles a lot) and that the two hose connections were a little further apart but it hasn’t caused me any issues. Seems to run a good 1-1/2-2 hrs on a full tank, overall a well built machine and definitely worth the money in my opinion.
I bought the exact same one and it’s excellent for doing hydro excavation. If you ever need to dig small trenches to run small cooper lines or cables by using the zero degree tip or a turbo rotary nozzle you can dig a perfect trench in seconds.
Excellent thorough review from a professional who knows his stuff. All the pertinent facts and direct to the point with an excellent demonstration. Thank you.
No matter what year is, just make sure is for gx390 engine.
I have this pressure washer. And I have to say as a contractor and developer I’ve seen 1,000’s upon 1,000’s of videos on how to use something (Bc I’m like a black Tim the Toolman Taylor 😂)! But this is the most informative video that I have ever seen that completely covers all basis. I appreciate it. 🙏🏽
I’ve been looking for a higher pressure one compared to my 1800psi washer I have right now. I’ll be going to the hardware store today to look at them up close, thanks for the video 👍
Especially like the maintenance cleanup at the end cuz most people won't think about that, Thx Man!!
That looks great! Thanks for the review
That was an excellent review.... Your a great salesman ! .... the voice , the way you explained it , every bit of information was taken in with no effort here... great job ... Kind regards from a professional cleaning service from Germany...
Thank you kindly!
I purchased this unit in 2019 for my house - not commercial use. When I can get it to start, it works great. It’s extremely temperamental and it takes forever to get this to start. It normally takes me about 30 to 60 minutes to get it to start. I normally walk away for 10 to 20 minutes.
Ive had this washer for about 2-3 years now. still starts on first pull. i use mine for commercial work. remember to prime it by doing 30 sec to 1min to get rid of all air in water system before each startup.
All in all i give it 5 stars
Where do you pour the oil
how do you prime it???

Good review.
I had a job where the foreman bought one of these, we mainly used it for greencutting concrete piles, cleaning rebar, tyres and excavators before transport or road use.
Was a really excellent washer, it generally started up right away without issues, the fuel tank was a little small, lasted maybe 4hrs.
The handle was a little short when pulling it and the 2 wheels rather than 4 was both a plus and a minus, but overall it packed a punch and was fairly well organized (hose, wand, etc.)
1 BIG point, In Australia these units have a 'dewalt brand' engine (NOT HONDA) so I would have my doubts about its lifetime.
very easy to understand and helpful. Thank you so much!
I absolutely agree about the ergonomics on the handle there's no reason why they can't make it like a truck dolly just fix it so handle Bends in the middle.
i dont mean to be so off topic but does any of you know a trick to get back into an instagram account..?

@@Painfulwhale360 always check the oil. You have to purge the hoses every time. Never let the machine run for more than 2 minutes if you are not going to use it better to shut it off . If your machine has a small hose to put soap never put chemicals like bleach, sodium hypochlorite etc it will damage the gaskets. better use a sprayer.. Great overview. I just purchased one and needed info.
I just bought one of these from home depot this past week to do some house washes with, went to use for the very first time this weekend and would never crank, being that i paid almost $1,100 for this machine and it never cranked i was very dissatisfied! I took it to a buddy that's a mechanic and he looked over it and he said there was definitely something wrong with it and to return it, thankfully home depot exchanged it for a new one and I'll be trying it again tomorrow, wish me luck that this one runs great!!!

Does anybody make an electric start kit for this washer? I found one on Amazon but it's only for engines built before 2011. Mine is new.
Thanks for the informative video! Great help
I just bought one from Bunnings, i will leave my experience very soon, waiting for a sunny day. Just can't wait to try this out😀
What is the cost of that machine?
How was it buddy?
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
okay but how do you slap a big block on it
fantastic video. just bought Dewalt 3600 psi pressure washer
My old pressure washer blew a hole in the sidewall of an old junk tire. Yeah, these things pack some serious power.
I basically have this model, but the 2021 version, same gpm. As soon as I unboxed it, I popped on my soap tip and tried to downstream but it wouldn't pull soap. Any recommendations?
Thanks and a great review. I wish you went into more detail about the belt drive model. Some homeowners wouldn't mind spending the extra $400 for a feature (belt drive) if they knew exactly what it offered over the lesser priced model.
It offers less vibration to be transferred to the water pump allowing for a longer life. That's it.

Also keeps the pump MUCH cooler than direct drive pumps.
Question about the downstream detergent injection system; I'm under the impression that detergent still goes through the pump, which means you have to be careful about what chemicals you use (chlorine, etc.). Is this correct? Because if it is, I'm considering investing in the x jet system (I'd rather not, but I don't want to wreck pump). Thanks
"Downstream" referring to after the pump. Can be directly after the pump or anywhere between the pump and nozzle.
Great review.
Great review and tips. Thank you..
Great description....can you help me with a further explanation on the choke and gas controls .....starting position and how to turn the unit on after pausing between jobs .....i just got mine.thanks.

How to change pump oil what kind of tools do I need
Great video- I have the 4,400 psi model of this DeWalt. I noticed how the siphon tube on it is on the outgoing part of the pump. Does this mean that I can run SH and other pump damaging chemicals through it?
Yes because it is downstream of the punp
Hi! What is the exact measure of motor oil for this pressure washer, I bought one this week.
Since the chemical injector comes after pump, can I use bleach safely without destroying pump, or are there backflow issues (when trigger is released)? Thanks
Jason L You should be fine as there is a spring that closes the soap when not in use
I work on pressure washer as part of making a living. I will let you in on a little secret about them. NO ONE makes pressure washers. They make pressure washer FRAMES and labels. In reality all pressure washers are more or less home built. The complete engine comes from one manufacturer and the pump comes from another manufacturer and the two are bolted together. Something you can do in your back yard. Now as for electric pressure washers most are made by a few companies in China just with different labels on them Now Karcher has and still does try and make some of its own pumps in house but if you ask me they are over priced and do not hold up as well. But their engines still come from an out side source.
I have thought what you say, i now see you are correct. Im a Kohler and Cat person but i dont know of that combo.
What is your recommended set up of engine and pump? Im dying to know.
As a reference I have used Simpson Ak4240 model for several years and love it. It shakes alot. Doesn't have dampers to frame. Same pump in this video. Uses Kohler quad clean CH440 engine. I love all of it but i see tweaks that can make it epic. I bought dampers for frame to engine also need to add feet to frame since originals shook off and now frame has been eroded from vibration on rough surface.
@@beerbeforebreakfast Pump= CAT, Giant, AR. As for the engine Kohler , Honda or Briggs. But Briggs is not what it used to be. Seen too may Briggs engine on PW fail due to plastic cams used on those engines. If you are running Kohler and CAT I would say you have about the best set up going. Belt drive unit I think last longer. Most pumps run best at 2800 to 3200. Running direct drive at 3600 over speeds most pumps and shortens their life
@@davidhenderson3400 thanks for the obvious experienced incite! I do love my Kohler, jury still out on the AR, but im certain next machine will be belt driven. That was all i used for the 2 commercial companies ive worked for, being on your own direct drive doesn't seem so bad to start with $$$$ comparing the 2, but now longevity is peaking out and then you have a double cost situation of where you bite the bullet ahead of time and hope the work hits or start a bit reserved and upgrade if needed later although costs more in long run! Thats life tho! Thanks again my friend.

I wanted this one, but I wasn’t going to spend over $1,000.00 for an additional 600 psi. So, I got the DeWALT 3,600 psi Pressure-Washer for $650.00 - I love it!!!

What parts do they actually make on that pressure washer? But it does look good and it has a great warranty behind it.
I have a dewalt 3800psi 3.5 gpm with the gx270, but I have a comet pump. I’ve searched and searched for information on one like mine but seems I have a unicorn with the comet pump? Does anyone have any idea why mine has a comet pump?
Do you know if Dewalt sells an electric start option for this unit?
Great review no one else has a review this in depth. I have the Dewalt 4400. I wish there was a review on it. I imagine it’s similar to this with it having 200psi more.
I have not seen or used the 4400. Would love to review it.
WorkshopAddict I finally had the chance to use my 4400 today. I added gas, oil and made sure to have it in choke because it was a cold start. First pull started but a few seconds later turned off. After that it took me and a friend 30 min to get it started again. I could not believe it. Once we had it running it shut off on us like twice but did start right up when restarting. Pressure is amazing but I hope I don’t have issues with this unit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as far as why it took to long to start. Thanks
I can’t work the regulator. It says on the cap to push down and turn but it is down. I can pull the cover up but if I release it it falls back down. I don’t want to put channel locks on it because the black cap/cover is plastic. I’m not weak and am turn real hard but I can’t turn it counter clockwise at all. Am I doing something wrong? Help.
Thinking about purchasing one of these. Currently I have a Excell 3100 psi 2.8 gallon that starts on every first try water pump was just replaced after 8 months use that's my only gripe. Other than that, I need something with a little bit more kick and this just might be what I'm looking for thanks for the review.
This has a good amount of kick.
What surface cleaner should I use with this pressure washer?
Is the recommended method to reduce pressure via the unloader valve or cutting the engine rpms?
This was helpful
Is this strong enough to cut into dirt? For under pinning purposes.
Anyone know where I can buy a new pump for one of these direct drive pumps (4 bolts) for the Honda GX390? Here's their part number. 9.6 GA15c.
I never adjust the unloader valve, if you need less pressure adjust by the throttle lever, you’ll save on gas and the unloader valve
I recently purchased a new GX390 WITH ELECTRIC START. Absolutely the very best decision ever.
Awesome! Is it much more weight with the battery and starter?
WorkshopAddict actually it equalized the weight of the pump. But my pump is a 5 gpm pump
@@billcoley8520 Nice, Thank you for the reply!
Hey how much did you pay for that pump ???
jhoamel23 the 5 gpm was around $550 to $600
Just bought this and it has some serious power. However, my throttle lever won't move; I'm pretty sure I have to loosen a screw, but because it doesn't mention this anywhere in the manual, I just wanted to see if anybody else is having the same issue before proceeding. Any input would be helpful. Thanks

Did you figure it out? I just got this unit and having some issue...
Do these washers have a built in water pump for mobile detail or would I have to buy a pump to draw water from a tank
how do you get pump preservative to flow through the unit? I've tried many times (explicitly following Dewalt and AAA pump instructions) and can not get it to come out the output port. my pump failed and i was denied warranty because i admitted this problem. paid for a replacement pump and have the same problem.
You should be able to pull (roll over) the engine while spraying.
I have the Simpson version of this as well. I read that you shouldn't let it sit without spraying water for more than 2 min. Is this true?
The water will heat up in the pump and not cool the pump, but a thermal regulator will spit out the water and allow new in. I would not trust that thermal bypass and turn it off it it will sit for 2 mins.
Dewalt has the same this set up but a CAT pump. It is 1,229.00 for the upgrade. Do you feel its worth it for the CAT pump instead of the AAA pump? Home depot sells them online if you need to look in into it. Thanks!
Good evening, what is the working pressure in the machine?
Very detailed, nice video. Where can I get the "pump saver" for storing it longer than 30 days. Your thoughts if I had it sitting without anything for almost a year? I'm changing all fluids and empting gas already.
You might want to run it to get any rust or calcium build up out of the pump. I am unsure of your water type so it is hard to say. watch this video and the links to everything are in the description. ruclips.net/video/nPS2dUw6oY8/видео.html

It’s a rebadged Simpson. Dewalt doesn’t make pressure washers. But they do charge more for the name
you are right they stopped making them about 8 years ago the lic out the name i am an x DeWalt rep
You're not lying same engine and everything!
I bought this pressure washer around a year back. Although it ran good with high psi to begin with it gradually lowered and last i checked it was at 3500 psi at max! Would not reccomend this pressure washer if you need a reliable one.
I believe lifan is the same. The engine on s One of them are Chinese engines and I was looking at them and somebody told me pretty much make sure you have a warranty... I bought a honda with a car pump and stainless cart instead
Which specific Simpson model does this match? If I can get the same thing for a better price, that would be great.
Overall what is the correct gas mix for this machine?
I considered this unit as I had a 3000PSI DeWalt until last year and it was a good unit, but I ended up going with the Stihl and I love everything about it. I loved the Honda engine on the DeWalt, but I felt like the pump was anemic at best. The Stihl uses a very good Koehler engine and beefy pumps. Let’s face it, any engine you put on these pressure washers will outlast the pumps so it’s best to get a unit with a great pump and a very good engine instead of the reverse. There are lots of other quality issues that make the Stihl a better choice. It’s ergonomically better since you don’t have to bend over to move it, the hose is more flexible, the wand has a reverse trigger which allows you to use your strongest fingers to actuate it instead of your weakest, it has a vibration mitigation system which allows it to essentially float on a cushion of rubber......it’s just all around a better unit in my opinion. So if you are considering this unit, take a look at Stihl too. Great warranty and can be serviced at any Stihl service center, of which there are a ton.
Hey ,Just curious as to how your stihl pressure washer is going ,any issues to consider ,Im in the market for a new one .

The dewalt dxpw 60605 is also 4200 psi 4 gpm, but has a cat pump.
I like the fact that the pump oil level can be viewed. Your statement regarding "the pump oil should be changed after the first x-number of hours use" makes sense. Every since my first new motorcycle at age 15, it seems the rule is with new engines to change the oil after the break-in period. Makes sense that pumps would follow the same rules. So this begs the question:
Do not most pressures washers have a sealed unit that does not include oil level viewing port, a pump that is not designed to easily change the pump oil? Should one also attempt to change the oil on one of these units after a break-in period?
I suppose ultimately one would want to follow the manufactures guide as to this need, but wanted to hear your input.
Most pumps are a "sealed" pump with oil in there meant to last a lifetime. Similar to what BMW does to their transmissions now..... Those units do not have a long life expectancy...... would I try to change the oil in those types, NO, because I would never pay much for them and I would rather not risk a failure due to maintenance. would I if it was easy, heck yes!
