When I first paid attention as a "watch aficionado," I came across Ginault, and read all the dirt on the brand from blogs. The owner never clarified where its watches were made. Fast forward to today. Based on my observation on the brand, Ginault should be commended for the possibility, that it was one of the first brands to "disguise" the use of parts made overseas, and to say otherwise. This was years before anyone started to realize, that Hong Kong made excellent watches. So give it up to Ginault, they are pioneers in this regard (I say based on what I have heard, not fact). However, it is fact that as an example, most Swatch Group lower shelf offerings have their origins in Hong Kong. Thank you for reviewing Ginault, they remain an "enigma," but relevant as the best submariner homage out there.

    • @Jedi391
      @Jedi391 Год назад +2

They’re relevant for more than that. This Silent Service is as well finished and put together as some of the more upper tier Swatch group products…..which also use Asian sourced parts. Of course as long as they’re good quality who cares.

I came across the brand due to its history. I researched more into the watchmaker and the story behind and I knew I had to pull the trigger for one of his work. Upon receiving the watch without a doubt the OR2 is by far the BEST Submariner homage to date on the market. It can rival for 116610 easy if we are not comparing the movements (the comments saying this is just another overpriced homage, they honestly don't know what they are talking about and have never handled the Ginault in person) Ginault builds watches that can easily rival watches 4-5 times the price range. This new Silent Service is extremely well built too. Besides the bracelet, I don't see how this is a Rolex homage. It's extremely different to my eyes.

Hello everybody. Two months ago I bought my Ginault 181275GSLID. It has a blue Dial with kind of golden applied indicies, a black date wheel and a blue coloured aluminium bezel with golden numbers. It is the most beautiful submariner style watch I have ever seen. And as Peter said the built quality is absolutely exceptional. I had to buy this used watch after a long search for it directly in the USA, and it has become my absolute grail watch. So in my opinion there is no doubt about it, that a ginault watch is worth every cent you pay for it. And the question about a replica or not everybody has to answer himself. I think it is all about the quality of a watch and what you get for your money!

Peter, I gave your video a big thumbs up for a few reasons. First, I like the prologue to your video. The Biblical reference was good and warranted. In today's information environment there is so much "misinformation" flying around it's almost impossible to get an accurate read on something so subjective as watches and who made what and when. The news is filled with half-truths, lies, and innuendos, and it's sickening. Has there been some court case with convicted felons that we are not aware of? No? Then, move on.
I have watched at least 20 reviews of the Ginault watches, and every one of them promulgates the expertise and quality of this brand's products. It's undeniable. So, if you are looking for a quality watch - here it is! You can buy it at a reasonable price. Does it make a difference where it was made? Who actually polished it? Who had the dedication to design and produce it? No. In the end, you are buying a quality watch - not joining forces with the "dark side" with some cosmic demon.
I have not had the pleasure of talking with "John" (I'm guessing the owner), but my guess is, that he's a guy who likes making watches and wants to do it well enough to make a positive impression with his public followers. And if he makes money at it, so be it.
Until there is a real court case where someone is found to be guilty of some misdeed, the gossip (and that's what it is) is not worth your time. And, even if the worst of all things happens, you can't take away the education, talent, persistent desire, and courage it took for someone to produce a product others appreciate.
Drop your stones - unless you are perfect.

  • @Jedi391
    @Jedi391 Год назад +27

I just got mine. I’ve never been so blown away by the quality of a watch. I haven’t handled a newer 41mm Sub so I can’t make that comparison but the Seamaster and 40mm Subs? Yeah, this holds up. To my taste the aesthetic is perfect. Inspired by previous designs for sure, but what modern watch isn’t (that still looks good). This is such a unique blend that it’s just perfect. I also like the idea of a small 1-2 man shop making these as opposed to some corporate giant mass producing them. As for the shady past, it’s pretty common for enterprising types who come out with some magnificent products to start it bending ethics along the way. You think Steve Jobs was fair and ethical with Wozniak? Still like your iPhone I bet. You think Hans Wilsdorf started Rolex as a non-profit because he wasn’t interested in making money, or just maybe it had something to do with being able to avoid some taxes? I look forward to more Ginaults.

I had to sell my 16610 and 116610 because I needed money to start my business in 2021 so I was looking for a good Sub homage and came across Ginault. I learned about the history, and I won't lie, it kind of bothered me a bit. But when I received the watch from Ginault, I got VERY excited. The quality is basically on par with my 6-digit Sub and blows the 5-digit Sub out of the water so it got me more curious and did some deep dive into researching the watchmaker TC and was blown away by the level of his work. The guy was the top watchmaker in his line of business, so if you are looking for a Sub homage, who else is better suited? Can't argue with that!

Dear Pete, I really enjoyed this review, and most of all the basis for your intro and rationalization of potential wrong doing by this watch company.
The watch seems absolutely well made and overall a quality piece. I don't have much of an issue with homages as long as they add a little of their own twist, and when the watch being homaged is no longer available and or almost impossible to obtain.
Beyond that, my greatest like is your story of fault and no judges and your impeccable honesty and integrity in your reviews.
I'm not perfect, I try to do as best as I can, and don't judge based on mistakes as present actions are more important.
While I prefer honesty, I respect this company for trying to make a good product and in doing so make a positive contribution to the watch community.

I have two Ginault models OR1 & OR2. The first one, has had the movement upgraded to a SW200 one and although took some time for them to do so, the work they did was to a good standard. Both are well made and the best Rolex homages out there. Price point being good value for money. I do not favor Mercedes hour hands so the sword blade style are welcoming. Aesthetically, there is not much different to Submariners. Accuracy of the OR1 and OR2 models are well within COSC and cheaper to maintain or service. Functionality being the same. A ten to fifteenth of the price of the Submariner (if you can get one) is a foregone conclusion to me that Ginault was the right decision. I have have owned submariners in the past and they did not do anything more for me than the OR1 and OR2.

I really don’t understand why Ginault does not take the time to eliminate the ghost position. They obviously take the time to remove the date wheel. All it requires is replacement of the 3 notch setting lever jumper with the 2 notch variant, an operation requiring the removal of 2 screws and the jumper and replacement with the new jumper. At best, a 5 minute operation for anyone familiar with the ETA 2800 series.

Pleased to see Ginault back. I like this watch. It maybe a Rolex Homage (probably the best one out there) but it also has some lovely Omega Seamaster references too. Also love the splash of red with the second hand and the text. Negatives too many lines of text (Kinetic Continuous - c'mon guys!) I preferred the name Ocean Rover to Silent Service. I personally wish they had relaunched it as the next generation Ocean Rover, if there has been any improvements, and celebrated their infamous past. This is a quality watch and a great way to get your Rolex fix without spending stupid money.

Although I've never had any actual experience with the brand , most people that have reviewed them, say they are beautifully made. At the end of the day they are an homage to rolex, although these ones are different to their earlier models. I'm in the camp if you want a rolex homage, then get a san Martin as they cost under £200 in the UK. The ginault is nicer than a san Martin, but at 1k , you can buy some great nearly new watches , like rado, tag heuer , oris , longines etc. And safe in the knowledge your buying a real Swiss watch , with real histories in the brands. That said the ginault is great quality for the money , and generally hold their value , so can't be considered a bad buy . I've kind of contradicted myself , lol. Good review as always Peter.

Well I choose to consider these watches for what the are, and they are exceptionally well made watches. While I think it's a great decision that they went without crown guards I'm not fully convinced by the oversized 12 o'clock marker beind so big that it gobbles up the adjacent minute markers, I would have preferred black glossy dials and the watch could have done with one or two less lines of text on the dial and a signed clasp.

Interestingly this video has made me rethink because as mentioned everyone deserves a second chance per se. I must say it seems those that do have these watches always speak highly of them. Fit and finish seems to be outstanding.
A little disappointing that the traveler bezel is not quite tight enough, I actually like traveler bezels they are just more useful than timing bezels for everyday use.

    1. i'm reasonably confident the allegations are true based on my interactions with some individuals on social media. i don't have irrefutable proof, but you know... the rest of my points will be made with the assumption those allegations are true [disclaimer: i own an OR2 and the likelihood of me selling it is pretty low, if not 0]
    2. calling them a "manufacturer" in their past is not right. we're not talking about a replica factory, but a single dude who hand made replicas for other dudes on some forum (or more than one forum?). this isn't like the gazillion "aliexpress special" brands who sell those literal replicas with a different logo just so they can't be branded as replicas
    3. in the grand scheme of things, making a couple dozen/hundred replicas aimed at "enthusiasts" (are they? i don't know and don't want to judge :)), is about as light grey in the spectrum of shady dealings a watch manufacturer can be accused of. i mean, some of the biggest watch manufacturers in the world literally made watches for Nazis and various other fascists, among other things. if you think Ginault's past is some kind of heinous crime, the available pool of not just watch, but other manufacturing companies you should be buying your stuff from, should be very, very, very, very limited
anyway, great review as always. my biggest criticism of the actual watch, as well as their previous models, stays the same: the dial bible is idiotic and ugly and stupid and borderline engrish. get rid of it and play with the text and logos to make it work with that, if you think the dial needs it (imho, it doesn't. let that inky shiny glossy deep black of the enamel "breathe" and come through on its own)
i'd also like to see an OR2 "pelagos edition", i.e. full matte in titanium [same hands and indices design as the OR2, not snowflakes, just to be clear :)], ceramic matte bezel, grainy matte dial, full 3D indices. the world needs a proper modern Milsub that's purpose built, and not too fancied up with shiny bling [i'm not hating on bling, but too much too often makes it lose its luster... pun intended :P]
if they managed to scale up production enough, it could even be a full blown series of models with all kinds of different dial colours, and maybe even designs (like the BlackBay for example comes with 3-6-9 numerals for some special editions)
eh, now i'm waaay past rambling , sorry :D

What you say about the Traveler's bezel and it's easy movement is wild or its because this video is 1 year old and they fixed the issue.
I say this because I have that exact same watch but with the date showing because I didn't want a ghost position. The movement of my bezel is perfect, not too light, not too hard and it always stays at the 12 position cause that's where i keep it most the time.
Awesome watches, I bought mine after all the great reviews I saw about it and its promotional price. Mine is #19 out of #112.

I do recall "the dirt" on them and don't hold it against them personally. They were trying to push the notion of an American luxury brand and it backfired a bit.
The Pros: Nice design and not too homage-ish. They seem to have really nice finishing. I thoroughly dig the logo and finishing touches.
The Cons: If Ginault wants to get their name circulating more they need to come up with lines that they can offer perpetually in the $400 and $700 categories first imo.
There is entirely too much competition in that ~$1,400 category from (way) more well regarded companies.
Great looking watch though and I wish them well.

Love the design, very Omega inspired. History doesn't bother me, forgive & forget. Only thing that bothers me is "made in America" TBH - means overpriced. Trust me, brother, not overpriced at all especially if you can score one at the phase-1 pre-order pricing. Just research up on the OR2's pricing trend, used market is around $1.2k and that's holding at the same price range as the phase-2 pricing. And trust me, these are hand-built in the US. There is a link on WUS, that some dude had to send the watch back to John for a check, and according to that person, John recorded a video of the watch a few hours after the package showed delivered. He puts them together at his workbench at home. It's been that way since the old days.

It seems to me that Ginault has fused the DNA of three watches. They took the case of the Tudor Black Bay, the bracelet and dial lettering of the Rolex Submariner No Date and the general dial and hand design of the Omega Seamaster from the sixties. The result is a good-looking homage watch with no clear provenance, but still lacking an independent design. I have to admit that the one item that bothers me the most is the lettering. In this case not so much because of a copycat issue but more as it is, in my opinion, just too much text on the dial.

I'm not a religious man Pete, however, your bible analogy was, at best, cringe worthy.
'Who I am to cast the first stone?" you say, while glossing over the reality of Ginault's controversy, downplaying their obvious lies and then pocketing a free watch for yourself.
I think it's fair to give Ginault a fair rub and to judge their watches on the merits, that said, it's also fair to represent the evidence available transparently, and let's be frank here:- the evidence isn't "open to interpretation" or trivial, and there is definitely more than simple "circumstances" to what has been made available online.
If Ginault want to be taken seriously they need to demonstrate some candor and there is plenty of reason to assume that they have not been honest. That info is within the interest of any prospective Ginault customer, to gloss over it like you have in this video is doing your fans a disservice.

    • @PeterKotsa

Hey BoboBloxham, it was not my intention to gloss over any lies, the dilemma I face is the same as any prospective Ginault customer, I did my research, dug as deep as I possibly could and was confronted with dead ends.
As you said, if Ginault want to be taken seriously they need to demonstrate candor, however I did not experience that.
So I myself am left not knowing the 'truth'.
I would’ve loved to present the evidence transparently, but thats where the problem is, I hit so many dead ends, found nothing concrete so I did not want to be a hypocritical finger pointer without anything substantial.
Thats why I made mention at the beginning, if someone makes a mistake there's room for forgiveness.
But what if you don't know what the 'truth' is, where does one stand?..thats where I find myself..not knowing the truth, nothing concrete.
At the end of the day, its the responsibility of potential buyers to do their own research and draw their own conclusions
