They toured with Deep Purple and they did this. It was crazy. The violinist was running in a circle while playing and the bass violinist was playing it behind his head. Great concert.

I had front row tix for ELO at Madison Square Garden maybe in 1978. They were tremendous and when they did this one it brought down the house. Jeff Lynne is a?master.

One of the early criticisms of rock and roll was that if Beethoven could hear it he’d roll over in his grave.
    This was Chuck Berry’s answer

ELO's genius cover of a Chuck Berry original, incorporating elements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, & even Chuck's falsetto "ooo's". The Beatles also covered it, & also retained Chuck's vocals. Thanks for your review.

    • @Cosmo-Kramer

Those falsetto "ooo's" are not an homage to Chuck, but rather, Little Richard.

ELO is a great band. I especially love their early stuff because they featured the orchestral elements front and centre in many of their songs, just like they do in this version. The whole El Dorado album is fire because of this very reason.

Roll Over is an ELO signature song that’s their encore when playing live. Jeff performed it as a tribute to Chuck Berry when ELO was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame a couple of years ago. Jeff said Chuck is “The King Of Rock and Roll” (sorry Elvis).
For anyone who wants to see an incredible live performance of the song with synched fireworks, look up one of Jeff’s three 2016 Hollywood Bowl concerts.

Electric Light Orchestra's (ELO) elaborate eight-minute reworking of "Roll Over Beethoven", on the album ELO 2 in 1973, included an opening musical quote from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and interpolations of material from the symphony's first movement into Berry's song and Peter Gunn theme in the background. This became one of ELO's signature songs and has been used to close the majority of their concerts. "Roll Over Beethoven" was the second single released by the band, in January 1973, and became their second consecutive top ten hit in the UK. An edited version of the track from ELO 2 was a #42 hit in the United States.
("Roll Over Beethoven" is a 1956 hit song written by Chuck Berry, )
