  • When installing an aftermarket amplifier for subwoofers or speakers for a car audio system that you are keeping the factory radio, you need a way to take the speaker level signal from the vehicle and convert it to an RCA line level (low level) signal. The device that allows you to do this is called a Line Output Converter, or LOC. But do you need an active LOC, or passive? And what features do different LOC's have? How do you install a line output converter? Let's take a look!

    Good info here! I used the Kicker KISLOC2 (2-channel line-out converter) for a number of years before getting the AudioControl LC2i Pro. The Kicker LOC does a nice job at doing what it designed for, but there is nothing to customize/tweek for your specific audio setup and needs. But at $15, the Kicker KISLOC2 is great if you need a no frills LOC. The AudioControl LOC's are definitely worth it though.. no regrets there!

    Can i use this to get my factory sub signal and also get full range signal and if so which side do I put the sub signal and full signal? I would be using a mono block amp for sub signal and 4 channel amp for front and rear speakers. Also would I just splice into the front and rear speaker wires to run them to the 4 channel amp? So I would end up with 4 sets of spliced speaker wires

For my wife’s car I was wondering about adding a small kenwood active subwoofer, it already comes with the speaker signal input, would you recommend using the AudioControl LC2 Pro to feed the sub instead of going straight from the speaker wires? I mean, it’s a powered sunflower from a reputable brand. Thanks in advance

      For subwoofers, i suggest Audio Controls Epicenter micro, comes with a 2 in 1 Bass knob, the inner knob controls Total Bass volume, and the outer knob controls the amount of Bass restoration you want to add to music that hass little to no bass= this can add it! Its also an active line out converter!

    Not sure if this will get a response but....
    I have a 2019 Subaru that I've installed new door speakers with amplifier, subwoofer with an amplifier, and a plug-and-play android head unit replacement (replaces the entire center console area and retains all factory features).
    I enjoy the head unit, and the door speakers are loud and clear. But the subwoofer leaves much to be desired. I had this amp/sub setup in a prior vehicle so I know this side of things isn't to blame.
    The issue I'm having is the sub output is nearly non-existent at low volume levels, and then jumps to nearly max output at the top 10% of the head unit volume.
    One issue I see is the subwoofer output is a single RCA but the front channel is dual. I was wondering if I switched to a line output converter like this, if it might take care of this issue? Or if you had any other checks or suggestions?

      I tapped into my center console cigarette lighter positive to get mine. Fuseboxes also work just make sure that whatever positive you're using is off when the car is off. Using a source that is active even with car off/key out will work to turn the amp on but will obviously keep the amp running until the battery voltage goes below minimum voltage for amp. Also, make sure that the positive has enough voltage for your needs...typically, you'll have enough power to turn on 1or 2 amps/devices via remote in using a 12 v positive.

    So, with AudioControl being such an important long-term sponsor, do you get a little more "one-on-one" with the company compared to the rest of the world? Maybe connections to someone who can answer "when" (not 'if' LOL) they'll re-introduce a version of the ESP-2 and/or ESP-3? And maybe replacement controllers for the original models? The ESP and Epicenter have always been, and in my opinion at least, will always be among the most iconic processors in the mobile audio industry. They've milked the Epicenter for decades while leaving the ESPs bleeding out in a shallow grave. Any chance you've got ties to someone who can bring 'em back to life for us?

    Some aftermarket head units are low voltage, and can only be tuned with an amplifier to a degree so there's no clipping signals. LOCs can boost that volume level to high and clear without any clips in the signals.

      @@cptklutch26 You have the Lc2i, not the pro? The Lc2i, has a built in Pfm= 33Hz bass cut off, so if you want lower Hz than that, get the Lc2i Pro= 20Hz, or better yet, the Best Loc for Bass, by Audio Control, in my opinion= the Epicenter micro, has a switch to turn OFF the pfm= goes down to 10Hz, has Bass restoration, plus comes with a ACR4 Bass knob= 2 Knobs in 1= inner Knob controls total output/volume of bass, and the outer Knob controls how much bass restoration you want to add( best to use bass restoration for music that has little to No bass present).Either of these Ac Locs can boost the output voltage very high if needed, up to 9.5volts of clean output! 99% of the time 4 to 5 volts is the most RCA output voltage you will ever need/want!

I ask due to signal degrading and it's effectively changing the ohm's? Obviously losing the speakers to fit an amp for a sub is not ideal would a 4 channel be best as to run the rears off 2 channels then bridge the others for the sub? Cheers

      This is a great question! The technical/most expensive answer is yes, they= Ac would recommend both. But do you REALLY need both= i dont really think so, here is why? The Epicenter micro has Bass restoration built in= it takes a sample of the full range freq. responce, and adds in freq. that either are not present, or are very weak, and increases the output by the amount you choose with included ACR4 (2) into 1 Bass Knob.( inner Knob= Total subwoofer Volume control, and the outer Knob= Amount of Bass Restoration you want to add!). Plus the micro is the only Epicenter with A Pfm you can switch off! Pfm on starts limiting Bass output @ 25Hz, and with Pfm set to off= 10Hz!

    I am installing an LOC in my Yukon and I am confused about how to set the output levels of the LOC. I know that the gain on an amp is supposed to be set to the same level of the RCA preamp output voltage, but an LOC effectively creates its own RCA output from speaker levels, and not all head units have the same output levels. I am using an aftermarket pioneer CD player(from 2005, lol) which has 4 volt RCA outputs, all being used currently, and am adding the LOC to the rear speaker outputs of the CD player to gain an additional subwoofer output. I am doing so because I am assuming that if I were to use Y adapters to split the sub output RCAs to 2 amps, it would effectively cut the output voltage the amps would see from 4 volts with one amp to 2 volts each with 2 amps. If that is not the case and amps see 4 volts regardless of splitting the signal, I would not need the LOC after all. Please advise.

    So I was recently told that there is loss of fidelity due to taking a low level signal, amplifying that, using the converter to bring it back down, so that it can be re-amplified. How much weight does this hold? No, I don't know what the suggestion for an alternative was yet.

    • @brandonjohnson131
      @brandonjohnson131 Год назад +1

      It definitely holds some weight but most wouldn't notice the difference. The preferred alternative is a 4V or higher signal from the head unit directly to the amplifier, which is why he noted the caveat of people needing to keep their integrated units (stereo, nav, engine diagnostics, etc.) Since that is usually the case with newer cars, many go this route to retain the stock functionality of the multifunction unit while upgrading the amplifiers and speakers alone.

      @@benpatterson5081 Yes, but good luck as that could be like finding the proverbial "needle in a haystack". Most OEM's don't use RCA outputs, instead opting for complicated wiring junctions to route signals. Like I said, most people cannot detect any sonic loss of fidelity from using a high quality LOC so you're probably good to use one if you want to wire in an aftermarket amp.

    • @evilinside5984
      @evilinside5984 Год назад +1

      This is why you buy a Quality, Active Line output converter like this Audio Control unit. It will convert the factory high level signal, to a Quality RCA output signal( that can be adjusted to up to 9.5Volts of clean RCA output Voltage) for your aftermarket Amplifier! By the way, most aftermarket amps wont need/want more than 4 to 5 Volts of RCA output voltage.
