  • The Converted is our new series about innovative homes that have been created, or converted, from unlikely places. From butter factories to churches, The Converted will show you that almost anything can become a home.
Ever wondered what it might be like to live in a home converted from something completely different? Like a blacksmiths, maybe? In this episode of The Converted, former homeowner Denise Nightingale gives us a tour of the house she commissioned to be renovated from a historic blacksmiths.
A blacksmith refers to a metalsmith who constructs items using wrought iron or steel. A historic practice, they create objects from gates and sculptures, to cooking utensils and weapons.
From 1926 to 1933, this converted home was a blacksmiths. For the 40 years following, it was the factory for Malley’s Whitegoods, famous for the invention of the ‘esky’. So the architect, Yuri Dillon from Liquid Blu, had his work cut out for him.
With the constraints of the front of the front of the home being heritage overlays on the front facades and roofline of the building, a great deal of internal damage from termites and unstable ground, the conversion was not an easy one.
But, Yuri succeeded in turning an old, dark blacksmiths into a contemporary home with an abundance of skylights, and walls converted into roll up windows, providing much needed natural light and air flow.
The incredible house sits in the heart of Brisbane’s eclectic Fortitude Valley. Despite this, current owner Samantha sees it as a quiet, homely oasis from the hustle and bustle of the area. With a mix of furniture that Samantha has tried to keep it true to its working class origins, the home is a beautiful mix of old and new.
