  • Here's how to get out of bed after abdominal surgery and minimize abdominal pain with Physical Therapist Michelle from www.pelvicexercises.com.au This simple 2 step guide shows you the best way to get out of bed following abdominal surgery including appendix removal, C-section, laparotomy, hernia or abdominal hysterectomy.
    Getting out of bed safely after abdominal surgery helps you reduce abdominal pain, move freely and reduce risks of prolonged bed rest including back pain, blood clots (DVT) and chest infection. Getting in and out of bed regularly after abdominal surgery helps you recover faster and return to your regular activities.
    This simple 2 step technique for moving out of bed avoids contracting the abdominal muscles when moving. Keeping your abdomen relaxed and well supported when moving helps you avoid abdominal pain and protects your abdominal wound from strain.
    The best way to move out of bed after abdominal surgery involves:
    1. Rolling onto your side without twisting through your trunk (log-roll technique)
    2. Raising your body sideways using your upper body strength and momentum rather than your abdominal muscles.
    Getting back into bed correctly is also demonstrated in this video. The correct technique for returning to bed is the reverse technique of getting out of bed safely.
    The Physiotherapy technique for getting out of bed shown in this video is appropriate for men and women to use after a range of different types of abdominal surgery that involve an abdominal incision (wound).

    A case of everything happens for a reason. Yesterday I had surgery for a hernia, and the night before I was surfing RUclips and ran across your video of how to get in and out of bed after abdominal surgery. It's perfect! I watched it several times and practiced on my bed. I'm post-surgery now and home, and there's a 'bit-plus of pain', even with pain pills , but your method is spot on. THANKS so much, Michelle, for posting your demo. :-)

      Not sure how this would work because you can not lay flat after a tummy tuck you have to be hunched over so I’m going to give it a try while sitting in my adjustable bed

    Just had appendectomy and this is the most useful video I’ve seen so far! Love the part where you say if you haven’t had tummy surgery before you won’t know how hard this is- truly I had no idea how hard getting in and out of bed is gonna be! Gonna look at more of your videos but wanted to say in case you don’t have it: would love to see your actually acting out how to get into bed because it’s a bit hard for me to visualize, and could also really use a video on how to get in and out of a deep squashy couch or just chairs. Ty again!

    Hi Michelle this is excellent advice. I found your previous videos very useful after my abdominal hysterectomy 5 years ago. It’s also helpful as I often wake with a very sore lower back and sometimes struggle to sit up first thing in the morning.
    I’m going to try the link you gave me for the stretch bands later today and watch it on my tv. I’ll let you know how I get on! Many thanks again!

    • @michellephysio

      Oh I’m so glad you received this links! Let me know how the exercises go. Yes after abdo hysterectomy it’s really hard to mobilise isn’t it! I use this technique always to get out of bed for my back, try to use momentum so as you get better at the technique keep the movement fluid if you can. Do you have a pillow under your knees when you sleep?

    Pt 2. The next day, on that same side, just under the stitches I felt a lump and on both outer thighs were numb, tingly and sensitive to the touch. It remained like thatĝfor over 1 year. They said that the lump was a surgical tissue. A few months later after standing a few hours in the kitchen, the lump got swollen and apparently was pressing on a nerve on my left leg cause I had a little difficulty walking.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  3 года назад +1

      Yes getting back in is tricky, make sure to sit well back on the bed. It's the getting the legs up at the same time as you lower your upper body that is the hard part. Try to do it ll in one movement - upper body goes down at the same time legs lift. It does get easier and practice is the key. If you have someone to help you raise your legs at first this can help too. All the best for your recovery 💜

    Thanks for your helpful instructions. The hospital should have taught me that. During prostatectomy, my adductor muscles in one leg were overstreched, so post operation I could not move the leg at all, for weeks. What is your recommended height of the bed from the floor ?

    • @michellephysio

      Great question! When you’re getting in and out keep the height so that your feet rest comfortable in contact with the floor when sitting over the side of the bed, all the best!

      @Joseph Odame There’s no hard and fast rule on this, I would suggest whichever side feels more comfortable. Often the painful side is kept uppermost in sidelying and rolling.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  3 года назад +2

      Yes Yvette! This is exactly joe yo get out of bed and move in bed after your op - it completely mimizes all pressure of the pelvic floor and it’s exactly how I mobilise sacrocolpopexy patients - golden rules head stays down don’t lift / sit up forwards, use the bed lever to move forwards when you lift up for meals etc good luck!

    How long do you recommend moving like this? I feel so lucky that I was getting in and out of bed this way on my own, and now after watching the video feel validated and proud and relieved! But now that I’m stronger, I notice my body wants to move more freely, but my cuff is still healing and I’m still going in and out of pain in my abdomen. I’m trying to be more mindful in my movements, even though I might be “capable” of more, because I don’t want to risk any prolapse or cuff dehiscence. Do you recommend doing this for more than six weeks?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  5 дней назад

      @bonniehilts1272 Hi there! I'm glad to read you're doing so well. This is how I routinely get out of bed (protects the spine and pelvic floor). Remember that internal healing takes 3 months but not visible from the outside because the external wound is usually healed. This is an important time to listen to your body, avoid heavy lifting, straining with bowel movements and caution with exercise, walking is usually the best form of exercise and avoid intense abdominal exercises, particularly abdo crunches long term. I hope this info helps! All the best for your long-term recovery 🌻
