    This is hands down the best Batman movie! And until Heath Ledger, the best portrayal of the Joker. Ledger was a different kind of Joker, though in some ways truer to the comic. Nicholson though is just classic, I think of him as the model for the 90's animated series Batman. Cannot picture Bill Murray as Batman though... I'm trying, it just ain't happening :/ lol

    Another interesting fact: Jack Nicholson didnt accept the role of the Joker at first, so Warner Bros offered the role to Robin Williams, who was actually very keen. But it turned out to be a ploy to snare Nicholson back because they made sure the news got back to Jack`s agent, to which he informed him if he wants the role, he better take it now, so for a huge sum of dollars he did. 5 years later, when they were casting for Batman Forever, Warner was very keen on Robin Williams to play the Riddler, when they offered him the role, he told them to stick it and demanded a written apology for using him as bait for the previous film. He eventually did get the apology and the next warner bros film he starred in years later was Insomnia, directed by Christopher Nolan, who coincidentally went on to direct the next Batman trilogy

      Actually, Warner Brothers and Robin Williams eventually worked something out, but after Batman Returns didn't make as much money as expected, the people at Warner Brothers wanted to bring back the campy attitude from the Adam West days; primarily to make it more appealing to kids. When that was decided, Burton dropped out. Followed by Keaton, who was only going to return if Burton did. After that, the WB decided to have almost every role be recast. This is why Tommy Lee Jones became Harvey Dent, after Billy Dee Williams had already played the part previously. This is also why they decided to give the role of the Riddler to Jim Carey. After being spurned twice by Warner Brothers, Robin Williams did indeed boycott working for them for a number of years until Insomnia.

    • @trans8010
      @trans8010 8 лет назад +15

      +Brett Vavra actually Keaton was on board, till he read the script for Forever and saw nothing he could identify with. WB even offered him a butt load of cash to keep him but he turned them down.

    • @thelegendinhisownmind7038
      @thelegendinhisownmind7038 8 лет назад +12

      It was kind of a combination of both. He originally left because of Burton being dropped, and that he disliked the screenplay; later saying that there was nothing in it he could identify with. At this point Warner Brothers offered him 15 million dollars to return, which he considered briefly, but after one meeting with newly appointed director Schumacher, he officially turned down the role permanently.

    I remember when Batman came out it was like nothing I had ever seen. Everyone was rocking Batman t-shirts and the Saturday after the movie's opening night there was a line of people filling up the theater's lobby and going outside into the parking lot and up the street. It was insane! The movie did not disappoint, either. One of the very few films that fully lived up to the hype. I've watched Tim Burton's Batman more times than I can count and I'm still not tired of it. I love Nolan's take on the caped crusader but this movie will always be my personal favorite. And I don't care what anyone says, Nicholson's Joker is better than Ledger's. Yup. I said it. Get at me, dawg. ;p

    • @KRAFTWERK2K6

      It's a shame that Billy Dee Wiliams didn't get a chance to reprise his role as Harvey Dent in Batman Returns. That would have been quite interesting to watch. But hey, at least he was in the 89 Batman. And yes, Nicholson's Joker was the best because not only was he the better psychopath, you also never knew what he'd do next. And that made him a lot more intimidating.

      I remember thinking when I started hearing everyone say that Heath was a better Joker "yeah okay, like that's happening". Yet when I saw TDK I felt he was equal to Jack, but he brought the Joker across as a different kind of character. Jack I think was more zany and in keeping with the Ceasar Romero / comic type Joker - but Heath was more grounded and believable.

    I remember, all too well, the backlash connected with Keaton as Batman. There was even backlash (but less so) about Nicholson as Joker, not about his acting or anything but about his body and how Joker is normally drawn as being tall and thin and Nicholson is neither.
    I think the thing that finally shut people up (other than the movie itself) was seeing Keaton playing a recovering alcoholic in "Clean and Sober" which I THINK came out just before "Batman".
    Honestly, I doubt there has ever been a casting choice for a super hero movie that didn't cause at least a little backlash for one reason or another.

    The thing I remember being shocked about in 1989 was that the villain got top billing over the hero. Things like that just didn't happen in the 80's. It was definitely warranted, though.

    • @RowdyRodimus
      @RowdyRodimus 8 лет назад +10

      That was all because of Michael Keaton. The posters originally were going to say "Keaton Nicholson" but Keaton had such respect for Nicholson he told Tim Burton to make it the other way around so Nicholson got the top billing. You'd never see an actor now let their respect for another actor have them stop from getting top billing, ego's are too fragile now in Hollywood.

    • @gabrieltello3905
      @gabrieltello3905 5 лет назад +3

      It’s because Burton didn’t really care about the character of Bruce Wayne/ Batman. It shows in the movie, if you think about it. He didn’t give Batman the respect he deserves as the ace detective he is. He also barely has any fight scenes in the movie and they are short-lived with only a few punches and kicks thrown. Burton didn’t even read comic books, except for the Killing Joke, which would explain why his Joker gets so much more focus in the film.

    • @justina249
      @justina249 4 года назад

      @@gabrieltello3905 Michael Keaton could hardly move in the suit in my opinion thats why the fights were so brief. Suit was heavy and claustrophobic. He couldn't even turn his head in the cowl so thats how the famous bat turn came to be

    7 Things forgotten about Batman '89:
    1) Keaton created the Batman voice everyone tries to do now.
    2) Ray Liotta turned down the role.
    3) DC has butchered the Bat Emblem since then.
    4) The 80s were parodied like in Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands.
    5) Warner mishandled the property for about ten years before it got made.
    6) This is Gotham City as we know it now.
    7) The action figures made Toy Biz a major company. Warner and DC yanked the license due to the firm not being able to keep up with demand. Toy Biz, instead, got money from Marvel to do the Marvel figures, then bought Marvel, and made Marvel a film industry force. Meanwhile, DC continues to suffer under Warner's incompetence in both film and toys.

    Christian Bale has never been my Batman. It's funny because I saw the movie when I was 9 and I hated it. I should've loved it because I was at the prime age to love it but I grew up on Batman the animated series, the Justice League shows, and some comics. Those shows/comics have laid a foundation for what I believe makes a good Batman and personally, I don't think Nolan's interpretation was a good one. Six years later, I was 15 and I finally watched the 1989 movie. It's by far my favorite live action Batman movie, Keaton was a brilliant Batman and Nicholson is an amazing Joker.

    At the time Jack Nicholson's deal with WB was to get a lower salary but a cut of the profits including merchandise. So instead of the $10 million he normally would have asked for, he did it for $6 and a cut of the gross. He wound up making $100 million on the deal which continues in residuals to this day and was the biggest payday for an actor at least back in the 80's.
