  • There was me thinking I had covered all the railways coming out of Silverhill Colliery in Nottinghamshire, but I was wrong.
The one railway I missed, turns out to be the most interesting of all.
After fleeing the Spanish civil war in 1936, a young and talented engineer by the name of Tonto De Abril, found himself working at Silverhill Colliery.
After the outbreak of the second world war, manpower was limited after so many were drafted into the military, and the need for coal skyrocketed, so the Stanton Ironworks and colliery company, had a problem.
How to transport their double shifting miners between the collieries of Silverhill and Sutton (Brierley Pit) without clogging up the busy Midland and Great Northern coal lines out of the collieries.
In 1940, a railway that sat upon the road, using lightweight Spanish locomotives, and minimal engineering, was suggested by the companies brand new Spanish war fleeing employee.
But what remains of this little known line?

Nice one Gaz, very interesting! All this talk of Spanish civil war reminds me of that Manic Street Preachers song if you tolerate this then your children will be next lol, which I think was written about it.

I was born in Stanton Hill but brought up in Huthwaite..My grandad and some of my uncles worked in the local mines..my granddad was one of the union reps ..I used to walk regularly over over what we called the rooley bottoms which was a trail between Huthwaite and Stanton hill the was a bridge just before you got into Stanton hill where you could see the railway shunters moving the tubs of coal..I used to love watching that..

I was totally fooled by this video the first time! I then watched WTAF and honestly, I thought WTAF, you did a great job. I have watched it since and now it makes me laugh because you can see a little smile as you're explaining the 'History' of it. Well done Gaz 🤣

Loved this even with the lack of evidence, your research plays a huge part in telling the story. Intriguing the Spanish connection too. I had to chuckle at the 'Fackly' road name. You did well to keep upright!

The only evidence needed was the date it was uploaded. ;-)

This country is steeped in ancient sites and archaeology, but not relatively recent industrial history, so much of this has been forgotten and built over, so your explorations are interesting and informative, note.. get some wellies!

Hayup Gareth what a cracking story I wonder if there's any drawings of his design an did the railway register it?
    Well done tonto!
The bridge looked older enough as far as I could see on an old iPad, we've got a garage here that's wartime 1941 breeze block built for American serviceme,s jeep storage, an it looks deceptively recent, with concrete slab base etc.
Good work on the platform result heh end of the line completion.
There's a Canadian surf punk with a Mexican name called Huevos Rancheros did a tune called what a way to run a railroad, it's a topsy turvey world ain't it!
Los Corridoros, the runners that's not a bad idea, get outa dodge.
    Cheers

Great video as always, here's a thought if the Mandela Effect is a real phenomenon then are our memories real or not, as your dad says, did what i remember doing in the past real memories or do i just think they are

Seems if you're looking for railway remains, you just look for moss or graffiti. It must be a lot more difficult in the summer months. Swings and roundabouts as always.

Gareth.. may I say something? I would like to understand you better. Not all are Englishmen, and not all are familiar with the “accent”.. I would appreciate it very much if you could speak in a bit more understandable way for us from other countries, more clearly (as your father does, every word is clearly heard and understood). Thanks for your work!!
