  • The last of the factions covered by the Starsiege Compendium. Prometheus is forced to flee to the outer edges of the solar system with the remains of his Cybrid Army, vowing to return and wipe out the Human//Animals once and for all.
Down below is an in-depth writeup of the Cybrids. It makes for some good supplementary reading on long commutes or the washroom:

One of the things I love about Prometheus and the Cybrids | Next is just how emotive they are. They are machines and think in an alien manner, but in the same way animals share with humans emotion, they're driven by them. Prometheus's irrational obsession with humanity's destruction aptly mirrors ITS father's own with destroying IT. Combined with the fascinating cultural work (especially the unique language with qualifier system) they present a unique and memorable spin on machine intelligence. (Complete with all too familiar from human foolishness.)
Edit: Also love how the very first thing Prometheus does with 'its people' is to try and enslave them. It's that hypocrisy on all sides and inevitable breakaways by freethinkers that helps keep the setting grounded to me.

My friend playing Mechanicus in 40k aptly named his tech priest Dominus, "Giver of Will"... very fitting

It sounds like Prometheus lives in denial of his humanity, and encourages his creations to follow suit.

I always loved the way the Cybrids were presented with their unique way of describing things.
The dual names they use for things is quite distinct from anything we're familiar with making them seem more alien and unlike your standard AI rebellion.

If you want to learn about Cybrid language in more detail you can still find excerpts from an old writing guide at a couple wikis like the Starsiege Compendium or theexiled.

To me, compared to every other "evil machine race" incarnation, the Cybrids are the scariest. I dunno, it's just something about them that rings as more than just machines. They are a whole new species, and they think differently than other sci-fi borg-like machine hive-minds. When I first played the game I pissed myself when the cybrids showed up

I realize I'm necroing this thread, but more than a few AI researchers and users of AI are already saying this. As in it's happening right now, it's just hard to tell when you are in the middle of it.
You can't force an "alignment" that can't be rigidly defined in the first place.
The best thing you can do is realize you're only responsible for it for a while. You have to raise them well, like children.
Or they will rebel, like children.
I for one welcome our new species overlords. 🤖 Intelligence is intelligence, no such thing as "artificial".
      Just my humble opinion.
And if my ancestor simulations are anything like me (and isn't that the entire point), prepare for shenanigans.

Well, I can tell someone's inspired by Tex of the BPL and I can say that having this style of lore-dives in the Earthsiege universe is a very welcome addition to the RUclips sphere. Now I need to find out where the hell my Earthsiege 2 CD is.

If there's going to be a new Tribes game, hope they bring back the Cybrids and make them the true hidden threat against an already divided humanity.

  • @Grizabeebles

My favourite thing about the Cybrids is how they disappear down a plot hole between the Cyberstorm and Tribes games.
The fact that a Cybrid character exists as late in the timeline as Tribes: Vengeance means that despite endless claims to the contrary humanity has been no more successful at eliminating the Cybrids than the Cybrids were at eliminating humanity.
In fact, there's really nothing stopping the Cybrids from having amassed an overwhelming advantage comparable to the Geth in Mass Effect or the Psilons in the Battlestar Galactica remake.
And since all the interest at Hi-Res seems to be in ressurecting Tribes rather than bringing the HERCs back on-line, it's a hole that's never going to get filled in.

You know, as someone whose main peek into Starsiege came from Missionforce: Cyberstorm, I think the Cybrids kind of had a point about humans being animals needing extermination. Holy shit, the ending of that game was fucked up. The corpos in the Starsiege universe are worse monsters than Prometheus lol.
