Get 10% off (save up to $47!) your own authentic Japanese snack box from Bokksu using my link: bit.ly/2PpECIa and code RNJ10
We went outside!! And filmed a place that isn't our house!! This park (Uminonakamichi) is one of our absolute favorite places in Fukuoka and we're excited we could finally share it. Unfortunately it was super windy so the audio isn't the best, but that tends to happen when you're near the ocean! There's a relaxing montage of beautiful flowers at the end with a really lovely classical song, which now sounds incredibly boring typing it out, but it's my favorite part of the video after the capuchins so I hope you'll stick around for it, lol.

If you want to grow anything else than Lupines (16:49) DON'T GET LUPNES! They spread like crazy and can develop a HUGE root system, they can take over your garden (and your neighburs) if you arn't suuper carefull about their placement. And even if you are it just takes ONE to escape and make more, They can also contribute to you getting less produce from your plants as they take so much energy from the soil. But on the plus side weeds don't like them becuse they take all their energy so atleast you will have less weeds and they are quite pretty.

Hey Rachel & Jun, you might not see this but if you do - I'd like to say thank you. I've known about your channel for a long and watched some kitty videos here and there, but I've started watching about a week ago, avidly. I saw your qna video about yourselves, and how you felt really depressed for a while and that's why you didn't make videos. Hearing you experience this, and being so genuine with your audience really made me appreciate you. Because we all go through it. Not one of us is always happy, and we all go through the lows. Sometimes the low lasts for a year, sometime it lasts for a week, maybe a day. But we all experience it. It's getting yourself to your normal again though that really counts. Seeing you bounce back from such a long time low inspired me to come out of my own mind and low. So thank you for inspiring me. These videos reminds me to take in even the small things, and appreciate all that's around us, as you and Jun do. Also I think we're around the same age, 26? ^_^ I'm happy to follow you guys, and glad I started watching. It's a refreshing break from the Taste Trash boys, lmao.

@@RachelandJunAdventures Thank You for replying! Happy Pre-Birthday Rachel! I love corvids myself; so, being in Japan brings me great joy even if the birds do try to steal your lunch. The roses are actually probably specifically climbing roses which have adapted to have tendrils/thorns that borrow into the surface. Otherwise, the weight of the blooming plants would cause them to come loose. I'm not totally sure, but the very tall colorful flowers look like various types of gladiolus. The plant that you said was 8ft tall was a species of Pampas Grass (fancy name Cortaderia selloana). It is beautiful, but the blades of the leaves are super sharp.

I love living near the great lakes, and don't see myself leaving the area long-term, but there's such a wealth of beauty all over the world. I think it's called crown shyness in terms of how the trees grow. In terms of light and physics, it's called the pinhole effect. The leaves for tiny holes that focus the light enough for it to reach all the way down to the ground.

The key to healthy roses is calcium. Roses are actually carnivorous plants. Those twisted thorny vines are meant to ensnare animals that come to eat their flowers and rose hips. The more the animals thrash, the more entangled they become. They die in that place and their bones feed the roses.

Langue de chat is french it literally means Cat's tongue. It's funny because "donner sa langue au chat" which means "giving your tongue to the cat" is an expression you use when someone ask you to guess something but you don't know the answer so you say "je donne ma langue au chat". Don't know why it's the name of a snack thought.

I love climbing roses! My abuela had a rusty gross chainlink fence and I planted climbing roses next to it, maybe 10 feet apart each. Every time I visited her I took any branches that were growing away from the fence and carefully wove them into the fence a little.
She passed away in 2014, and her house was sold, and I haven't been back over there, but if the people who bought the house didn't like roses, they would have needed to rip out the whole fence because the roses were there 9 years and well fertilized and they were very much part of the fence.
There are a couple of styles of roses you can buy: climbing, bush, and carpet (plus "tree" roses which are just long stems with roses on top, but those are grafted). The nice thing about getting a variety is that you have roses down low, in the middle, and up high. Some of the climbing ones have a really strong fragrance too!

Fun fact! The fake ruins found in a lot of gardens are called follies! They can be anything from gazebos to ruins to hidden patios, there are a lot of awesome and beautiful ideas and they're great for all sizes of garden, you've just got to know where to put them! Also the roses that grow sort of along the walls are trained climbing roses (I believe, I'm not 100% sure) which is done by sort of holding the young branches against the wall with thin wires. I'm sure that's not the only method, but it's the one I've seen! Good luck with your garden to whomever may read this :D

So... just in case you weren't aware, the garden shown at 16:20 (where you said that was how you wanted your garden to look), is what's typically called "french cottage garden" style. There's also "english cottage garden" which is very similar, but typically sliiiiightly more formal. I really think that cottage gardens with hints of japanese style could look INCREDIBLE and I really hope you show us how you both design and lay out your garden step by step :)
Pinterest can be an amazing resource for gardening too, just in case you're not using it for that, yet.

The flowers at 16:39 are lupins! I remember when I lived on the west coast of Canada, they were seen almost like weeds, a wildflower that spread easily. They'd grow along the side of the highways-- pretty, but generally not valued. Then on the west coast of Canada, you can buy seeds for them and plant them to enjoy as a flower, and it was such a weird difference! Amazing to see a whole vast garden of them!

I found myself starting to say "it's almost like an anime" when they were in the field of blue flowers, and I stopped myself because that's a dumb thing to say. This park probably inspired some beautiful floral scenes I've seen and that's why my brain went there.
Also, Australia (from my understanding) only has one flamingo in the whole country who's really old and lives in the Adelaide Zoo. Once he dies that will be it because Australia's import laws forbid more being imported. I've visited Chile, he's a lovely old man. The crazy thing is, according to the fossil record Australia had something like 6 species of flamingos up until a million years ago when the climate changed and drought became more common. They're still listed as an Australian bird in some books because a flamingo turned up on one of the offshore islands and just hung out for a few months. Maybe they'll be back one day.
