    Thanks to Native for sponsoring our video and helping us pay for our house! I can't believe it. You guys, we can do like ANYTHING to our yard!! Isn't that insane?! It's so unbelievable to think that it's ours. We were so lucky to find such a peaceful spot and we are so, so grateful we were able to buy it. Life has taken us in directions we never imagined and it's really all thanks to you guys. Thank you so much for helping us get here!
    The best days we've had so far this year have just been existing in our yard and listening to the sounds of nature. Each time we've gone back to our apartment with such an incredible feeling of peace and happiness. We can't wait to start planning our garden! Obviously we need to be careful about staying away from where the house will go so we can only plant things in part of our yard for now. Let us know if you have any vegetables/fruit tree suggestions that we should plant! I think we're in hardiness zone 9.

      I loved this about rachel but kinda hated it too. See growing up my dad was a logger he owned his own company. Logging doesn't have to be evil the way most people see it. What my dad did was called select cut logging. He would only take very mature trees or trees that could cause problems. That way there was room for fresh growth and also left trees for the next generation. Clear cutting is where a company comes in and strips all trees down no matter the size. That makes me mad. But I'm totally fine with select cut logging. Besides the roads that are made which will eventually grow back over you can't tell my dad was even there. I spent many of a summer and weekend in the log woods and sawmill.

      To be honest, I feel like both opinions are sort of correct. I've lived here for 6 years now, and frankly never want to leave. My (also foreign) husband and I have a son now, and he's happy and adored by our neighbours and the nearby community. The feeling of warmth and community here is INCREDIBLE, both in the country and the city (especially Osaka).
      There are also people for whom Japan is a bad fit. It's no one's fault. There are also Japanese people for whom Japan is a bad fit, and they end up living a much freer, happier life elsewhere in the world. For the people who don't fit well here, they'd certainly find Japanese people cold... if people don't have an affinity for you, they're not going to spend much time on you. That's true anywhere in the world, but for a society which is less diverse in attitudes than most, it means you'd have a hard time finding "your people" here and would be more likely to clash with neighbours or coworkers, whom you can't avoid.
      To anyone reading this, my advice would be to TRY living in Japan, if you're interested... and, then, wait and see.

    Here’s some info if interested:
    Hot compost is a good option if you have a lot of weeds, dead leaves and food scraps. Better if you have a yard. This can be done in multiple batches to create different times for the compost to finish.
    I live in an apartment and do worm compost. It’s done in bins and is really easy as well. The worms eat food scraps and some brown material and you can use their pop for compost. Good for small batches.

    A tip for the future, that I've done for my own plants that are in pots (because I didn't have time to figure out where to plant them before winter strikes) is to just find a spot in a garden bed (or ground where it won't get in the way), dig a whole, and plop the pot inside. Then come spring after the snow has melted, you lift the pot out of the hole and do what you will with it. That way the plant stays warm being in the ground, versus being exposed on all sides to the colder weather. Love these house update videos, I find the process so fascinating!

    Remember to get actual avocado cuttings, don’t just plant the pits from a random avocado! Like apples, avocados are _not_ true to seed. Also, plant two from of two different varieties (and one male, one female, judging from other comments) to take advantage of hybrid vigor.

    Neighbors in more rural neighborhoods in Japan can be really chill and sweet. When I visited my grandma during the summer her neighbors would constantly come over to check up on her (grandpa was hospitalized then) and they’d bring so much vegetables. Unfortunately a lot of it ended up rotting since they’d bring too much for only me and my grandma to eat. But they were always willing to check in to see if my grandma was doing ok.

    This is giving me "Wolf Children" vibes. It's a great movie where the main character moves herself and her children to a more rural area and all the neighbors help her. There's a lot more to the movie than that but it just makes me happy to know that part wasn't fabricated and Japanese people are that kind. The world needs more of this behavior.

    Important advice: you got horsetail growing in between your grass. It looks pretty, but it's a mean weed. It's going to suck all the vitamins out of the soil, and can rapidly take over your garden within a year. (We had it 2 years back, it grew from a small square meter patch to covering half our garden and killing all other grass and other small herbs/flowers. I quickly rechecked the video again: you zoom in on the plant at 14:46

    • @vixxcelacea2778
      @vixxcelacea2778 3 года назад

      I think this comment needs more views just in case they do have this plant. Apparently rich soil is not ideal for horsetails
      Though if this garden has been this way for a while, perhaps it's not too much of an issue. Depends on if those plants are new or not.
      They also spread through spores, which makes them extra tough to get rid of.

    • @DF-wh1yx
      @DF-wh1yx 3 года назад

      @@vixxcelacea2778 Our garden had rich soil and didn't have the plant originally but one year it got in (i didn't know what it was at that time and as such didn't see it as a threat. Big mistake). We indeed had a hard time getting rid of it (burning, cutting, literally digging up the roots). Sadly it grew back as if nothing happened. We finally got rid of it by using a strong poison. (which sadly meant the death of a whole lot of other plants and ruined our soil ) :(
