Reminds me of one of my clerics. He was a war cleric that ended up being known for destroying entire cities that were full of vampires. Pretty much went the opposite way you did with more cleric levels and only a few Rsnger levels. He ended up soloing 6 vampire lords in their lair between his radiant damage bonuses and insane healing spells.

YES! I've been using the DandDWiki homebrew for Witcher and Witcher Variant, and they are quite overpowered as most homebrews tend to be, but i'd love to see his take on a more legit Witcher build. Some basic things about Witchers: Magic amulet that can detect magic, the detect magic spell is probably what Tulok will suggest, magic items aren't granted at level 1, so you'd have to do a quest to get your amulet. Although, Witchers aren't Witchers UNTIL they get their amulet (As its the final Witcher Trial) So your DM would have to either give you it for free as an artifact from your background, or run you a Witcher Trials session to earn it, but that doesnt work unless you do it alone or have a full team of Witchers. It's probably easier to just give you a magic amulet that can cast detect magic once per rest or 3 times per day. Alchemy: Witchers are mostly all about using alchemy and poisonous oils to prepare and be highly effective in combat against particular monsters. You'd need Crafting rules or you'd need to make it a homebrew class with the special ability to create concoctions. There's no actual dnd class that uses alchemy or poison as a default special property, so you'd need to craft them in your down time. That said, Witchers resist poison and disease because of their body makeup, so probably variant human to get a feat for Toughness, Dungeon Delver, or Hardy. Cats eye: Dark vision, if you go variant human, you dont have a lot of ways to get Cats eye outside of the DM homebrewing you rules on crafting it as a potion, so you might have to forget feats and go with elf for dark vision. Witcher fighting style: They would be a combination of fighter and ranger, for the second wind, action surge, proficiency in all armor and weapons, Sharpshooter, Monster Hunter, and Favored Enemy are all things to think about, so, he might be a level 4 fighter at the very least and at least level 6 ranger just for greater favored enemy, and some fighting styles. Witchers do have specific magic though, primarily Shield (Quen), Igni (Firehands), Axii (Suggestion, Command, etc), Yrden (Slow), Aard (Eldritch Blast), So a warlock would be good as well or just take magic initiate, but ranger spells are limited, idk if you can get all those as a ranger, so dabbling into Fighter, Hunter, and Warlock would be stretching it kinda thin. I'd go for an Order of the Mutant Blood Hunter - they may be Mercer's homebrew, but they're almost treated as canon by most D&D media, and they are very much based on the Witcher series.
This feels like a fantastic build! The only thing I’d change is perhaps war cleric to grave cleric, they specialise in dispatching undead and their base ability let’s you double damage it feels thematically more in line and you get even more damage out of the build
Call me am otaku all you want but... I love seeing my favorite anime characters and how Turlok makes a legit class and build of these characters. So if he does notices me... I'd like to see a build of Vash the Stampede from Trigun. But I'll be happy with whatever Turlok surprises me with.
On the whole Frankenstein thing, I've always considered "The Monster" to be something of a son to Victor Frankenstein, even if Victor was a terrible father, so you won't find me correcting people on that, at least not without a long, boring, over the top explanation on the matter but no one cares about that anyway.
Lol the moment when Dracula introduces Van Helsing to the vampires reminded me of the time Harry Dresden attended a vampire costume party dressed as a fake vampire. Also, Harry Dresden would be a fun build.
Great build man. Can we see a build for the punisher or judge dredd (I'm guessing Varient human arcane Archer or weapon master, but I can see some rogue or ranger baked in there)
For Dredd, I’d go for 11 lvls of Inquisitive Rogue and 9 lvls of Battlesmith Artificer. Never forget his specialised ammo types from Arcane Weapon and his Lawmaster motorcycle complete with all the same functions his Lawgiver pistol/hand crossbow has, including an electrocution feature for anyone not coded to those devices trying to use it. I’d probably reflavour the 6d6 Sneak Attack as a Rapid Fire shot, make sure to grab the Repeating Shot infusion and a Helm of Awareness because he never takes off that helmet.
If you want to play into his becoming a werewolf without actually going out and contacting lycanthropy, you could play as a Shifter race from Ebberon. Just some added flavor if you want. Happy Halloween all! 🎃👻🧛♂️
Amazing, I made a ranger for a Halloween 1-shot and he was almost exactly the same as your build. I wasn't really going for Hellsing, but I DO always want to slay vampires, so I guess it makes sense!
I suppose Van Helsing's "Tojo Blades" (those steampunk buzz-saws that pop out of his sleeves) could count as some kind of enchanted dagger. I notice there's never a consideration for magic-items with these builds... which is understandable, seeing as how magic-items take a long time to make and are often found in the loot at the discretion of the DM. But yes... I also like this movie. It's the closest we've ever gotten to a "Castlevania" live-action film, with a steampunk-gunslinger as the protagonist. And seriously... if you don't love that gas-powered repeating crossbow, check your batteries.

You know, if you do end up making a Spyro build, you should also do Gnasty Gnorc if for no other reason than to use the Half-Orc race. You don't seem to use that a lot in your builds.

I'm actually playing a character very similar to this for my Curse of Strahd campaign, but with no levels in cleric and I use a magic longbow instead of crossbows. I kind of wish I'd seen this before (level 9 now) as I may have made things very differently. Keep up the great work! Now I need to go find that Van Helsing movie to watch.

I made a character thats like, a mix of Van Helsing and a Belmont. Strahd beware, Matthias Toborne is on the hunt. Glad you made this vid, Van Helsing doesn't get enough love nowadays
I built a monster hunter as a Ranger/Cleric for my last character, but I used Monster Slayer Ranger and the UA Twilight Cleric and flavored her as a priestess of Artemis. Limitless darkvision is pretty good for a sniping-based character.
I just wanted to throw this out there: You said for 9th level Ranger that nothing stood out to you. What you might like to consider is Conjure Barrage, which allows you to throw a nonmagical weapon into the air and create a cone of said weapons that fly forward for a Dexterity Save attack. Where I'm going with this is you can throw a single flask of Holy Water that can then be multiplied to wipe out an entire horde of undead with one shot.
With some tweaking this could be a pretty good Bloodborne hunter build, pretty neat. Also "You don't need to be afraid of the dark the dark needs to be afraid of you" Hey that's Riddick's line....omg PLEASE do a Riddick build, would be sick.
Lets focus on the fact that for one brief moment Van Helsing was looking a over 100 vampires and it genuinely stopped him in terror. Not their grotesque nature or the shock of being caught in enemy territory. The man had immediately abandoned winning a fight and moved on to asset recovery.

Would you be interested in doing Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star? I know he’s basically an Open Hand Monk, but he has so many different ways of messing with people by poking them that it will either lead to an interesting mix of different class abilities or lots of flavor

I thinking you'd go for the paladin divine-smite option since he wouldn't use those spell slots for actual spells, but now that I've seen the build, cleric works great too.Yes, now that you mention it, Van Hellsing is a specialist. Not all that effective, for instance, in a hobgoblin hunt. It makes me think of the old Aquaman-is-useless jokes, and then the fiends/undead/etc. show up.
I used a Similar build to make Vampire Hunter D, but as a vampire and changing the Crossbow expert to a great weapon master using a greatsword so more melee-focused. This build looks like it would so much fun to play, Especially for the curse of Strad

I think a good Talion build from shadow of Mordor/shadow of war. My recommendation (you do NOT have to follow this, though it’s my take on a good talion build -Half elf or variant human (choose athlete feat) -Warlock (Archfey or old great one as patron as both have spell “dominate creature” and “dominate human”. Also pact of the blade is a good choice as talion mainly used his Longsword during the entirety of SoM/W) -fighter (battlemaster, for the superiority moves as talion is more than just slashing, he be jumping over shields and sliding under troll legs!) -alternative multi classes to replace fighter: ranger (it’s his title) in there for favoring enemies (in talion case, orks.), and rouge (he is jumping off buildings, attacking from unexpected angles, and is quite stealthy) -either soldier officer or noble knight as his background, as he was a respected individual and very good at leading an army against his foes) -high charisma(standard for warlock), strength, and dexterity.(strength and dex because talion is known for leaping around buildings and ruins and attacking from unexpected angles, as stated above) -constitution and wisdom are good to have, (though prioritizing constitution is best as talion can take a beating and a squishy talion is no good) -I guess dumping intelligence in the beginning (because you don’t need to be smart to get through your goals, you just need to be smarter than the orks your leading) -and of course, you are a neutral good, though as the story progresses, he can turn into a lawful evil if the player makes a few wrong choices in SoM/W.
That is super thorough, I might switch it up for revenant, but otherwise seems right. To be fair, I only played like 2 hours of it before getting distracted by something shiny
Hexblade Warlock would make sense too, because then you can bind to two weapons: the longsword and the bow(which he always summons in the game, so it would fit thematically) and you can learn Dominate Monster as any Warlock, not just Archfey and GOO.

Y'know, I'm probably late suggesting this now that October's ending, but do you think you could do Ghostface at some point? I admit it would probably be somewhat challenging to really find a lot in him that could be accurately done with mechanics, but it could still be pretty fun.

Tulok the Barbrarian It’s an old webcomic based on 3.5 DND. It’s very dated and the characters are pretty bland, mechanically. The archer would be a standard archer, the bard would be a bard with some swashbuckler. Etc.

Amazing, I made a ranger for a Halloween 1-shot and he was almost exactly the same as your build. I wasn't really going for Hellsing, but I DO always want to slay vampires, so I guess it makes sense!
Vampires don't deserve undeath.
I suppose Van Helsing's "Tojo Blades" (those steampunk buzz-saws that pop out of his sleeves) could count as some kind of enchanted dagger. I notice there's never a consideration for magic-items with these builds... which is understandable, seeing as how magic-items take a long time to make and are often found in the loot at the discretion of the DM.
But yes... I also like this movie. It's the closest we've ever gotten to a "Castlevania" live-action film, with a steampunk-gunslinger as the protagonist. And seriously... if you don't love that gas-powered repeating crossbow, check your batteries.
Van Helsin is a criminally underrated movie

You know, if you do end up making a Spyro build, you should also do Gnasty Gnorc if for no other reason than to use the Half-Orc race. You don't seem to use that a lot in your builds.
It's funny that you dumped cha because the original van helsing (from Dracula) was basically a massive goofball, unless he was hunting vampires of course.
I'm actually playing a character very similar to this for my Curse of Strahd campaign, but with no levels in cleric and I use a magic longbow instead of crossbows. I kind of wish I'd seen this before (level 9 now) as I may have made things very differently. Keep up the great work! Now I need to go find that Van Helsing movie to watch.

Absolutely phenomenal film. As a vampire hunter myself I respect a good killing of evil even if Gabriel Van Helsing has almost nothing in common with my good friend Abraham Van Helsing. They both fight evil and I would happily have at my side in a fight.

I built a monster hunter as a Ranger/Cleric for my last character, but I used Monster Slayer Ranger and the UA Twilight Cleric and flavored her as a priestess of Artemis. Limitless darkvision is pretty good for a sniping-based character.
I just wanted to throw this out there: You said for 9th level Ranger that nothing stood out to you. What you might like to consider is Conjure Barrage, which allows you to throw a nonmagical weapon into the air and create a cone of said weapons that fly forward for a Dexterity Save attack. Where I'm going with this is you can throw a single flask of Holy Water that can then be multiplied to wipe out an entire horde of undead with one shot.
I do like that Frankenstein surname logic.
With some tweaking this could be a pretty good Bloodborne hunter build, pretty neat.

Lets focus on the fact that for one brief moment Van Helsing was looking a over 100 vampires and it genuinely stopped him in terror. Not their grotesque nature or the shock of being caught in enemy territory.
The man had immediately abandoned winning a fight and moved on to asset recovery.

I thinking you'd go for the paladin divine-smite option since he wouldn't use those spell slots for actual spells, but now that I've seen the build, cleric works great too.Yes, now that you mention it, Van Hellsing is a specialist. Not all that effective, for instance, in a hobgoblin hunt. It makes me think of the old Aquaman-is-useless jokes, and then the fiends/undead/etc. show up.

I used a Similar build to make Vampire Hunter D, but as a vampire and changing the Crossbow expert to a great weapon master using a greatsword so more melee-focused. This build looks like it would so much fun to play, Especially for the curse of Strad

i would have gone slayer ranger over hunter otherwise really good though. i did a slayer ranger/archfey pact of the blade warlock using the moonbow from unearthed arcana for a strahd game. was wrecking face
So we have Van Helsing, Trevor Belmont, and Alucard builds now. Now, al we need is the Hunter From Bloodborne and we can have a group of gothic monster hunters. There's probably a better character i'm not thinking of rn. Also, the DM is gonne so confused.

I think a good Talion build from shadow of Mordor/shadow of war.
My recommendation (you do NOT have to follow this, though it’s my take on a good talion build
-Half elf or variant human (choose athlete feat)
-Warlock (Archfey or old great one as patron as both have spell “dominate creature” and “dominate human”. Also pact of the blade is a good choice as talion mainly used his Longsword during the entirety of SoM/W)
-fighter (battlemaster, for the superiority moves as talion is more than just slashing, he be jumping over shields and sliding under troll legs!)
-alternative multi classes to replace fighter: ranger (it’s his title) in there for favoring enemies (in talion case, orks.), and rouge (he is jumping off buildings, attacking from unexpected angles, and is quite stealthy)
-either soldier officer or noble knight as his background, as he was a respected individual and very good at leading an army against his foes)
-high charisma(standard for warlock), strength, and dexterity.(strength and dex because talion is known for leaping around buildings and ruins and attacking from unexpected angles, as stated above)
-constitution and wisdom are good to have, (though prioritizing constitution is best as talion can take a beating and a squishy talion is no good)
-I guess dumping intelligence in the beginning (because you don’t need to be smart to get through your goals, you just need to be smarter than the orks your leading)
-and of course, you are a neutral good, though as the story progresses, he can turn into a lawful evil if the player makes a few wrong choices in SoM/W.
That is super thorough, I might switch it up for revenant, but otherwise seems right. To be fair, I only played like 2 hours of it before getting distracted by something shiny
Hexblade Warlock would make sense too, because then you can bind to two weapons: the longsword and the bow(which he always summons in the game, so it would fit thematically) and you can learn Dominate Monster as any Warlock, not just Archfey and GOO.

Y'know, I'm probably late suggesting this now that October's ending, but do you think you could do Ghostface at some point? I admit it would probably be somewhat challenging to really find a lot in him that could be accurately done with mechanics, but it could still be pretty fun.

I recently went with a Blood Hunter human variant with Haunted One background for my "vampire hunter". I chose Order of Lycan to fit the whole werewolf portion of Van Helsing in this film.
This movie had my version of werewolves, mr hyde, and Frankenstein

Tulok the Barbrarian It’s an old webcomic based on 3.5 DND. It’s very dated and the characters are pretty bland, mechanically. The archer would be a standard archer, the bard would be a bard with some swashbuckler. Etc.
