I taught English in Japanese middle schools. The high schools are stratified, which one you go to depends on your entrance exam scores. This high school obviously has a lot of "good kids" who did very well on entrance exams. You can tell by the fact that they're all wearing regulation uniforms and not making alterations or dyeing their hair to get the "kinpatsu" look. At schools with much easier entrance requirements you'll find the kids with dyed hair, loose socks, miniskirts, etc.

I suppose it was partly because it's a school from a poorer area, so it was hella ghetto. But you don't get that in Japan, I suppose. Maybe a little, but not to this degree.

Actually, after years of me saying it, I learned that "sugoi" means "immense/horrible/terrible". The word your looking for is "sugē", meaning "great/amazing/awesome".

That home room thing is very similar to what I have in my school which also might be in place in other schools (most likely) it’s called the form tutor, it’s when the group of students which are assigned to a form tutor for the 5 years in that school go to a classroom and we are informed on things that happen during the day such as activities, vaccination forms and the time to chat with our friends other than break and lunch time

We don’t even get real plates
We get plastic and styrofoam trays..And our cafeterias are dirty.
This is why I bring my own lunch and eat in the classrooms..
First world problems, where i live, chile. I don’t even have lunch most of the times. Or else i bring it from home. I’m sick of these anime fans wanting to live in japan so bad and criticizing everything that isn’t japanese or everything that is from their country... i would do anything to live in the US.
Mostly they bring their lunch from home in Japan. His school is probably rich because they have international students. So they also have a good cafeteria.
Still, a standard Japanese high school cafeteria is a bit better. A little expensive but you can but udon, fried chicken and other basics.
