I’ve got the flotool oil pan too and my vent kept popping open as well. I fixed that by reaming the hole out a little bit and putting a tire valve stem in place of it (with core removed). No leaks and just twist the cap off when venting
I have the same one with the same issues that I bought for $15 bucks at Advance Auto. Its a POS and pisses me off. When I haul my oil off to the recycling center i have to put it in a heavy duty contractors bag and take brake cleaner and paper towels with me because of the risk of the vent cap popping off and spilling oil everywhere. Too shallow of a catch, too small of a drain catch hole. I forget who makes them, but I have another at my brothers somewhere that has a huge 14" spin off catch and cover with removable plastic screen.
I like the one with the red caps because it seems more durable to me. Plus it holds more oil. That’s a bonus for me because I don’t always remember to empty and recycle.
Thanks for the review. Even better: your new one allows you to skip the oil drain pan emptying, cleaning, and storage. Well, I hope so anyway. There are reviewers saying these leak.
You can get mesh filters for large bore funnels. If you drill out those 2, small holes in the flotool pan, you can just pop one of those mesh strainers in there to catch the sump plug you inevitably drop 😂
I have a very old roound drain pan which the whole top come off and an small drain cap on the side so no oil driips outside of the container. It times for a new one. Is there a video showing the clean up of the outside of the pan? Thanks.
Just get a regular open pan with a spout to transfer into your container. These look like they will make a mess. Too complicated for what they do. The open pans have nothing to go wrong with and will last forever
Every single thing we do has some significants - I actually searched this : One question - Water got in my pan - Now it has sludge - How do I clean out the sludge - Thanks *
I haven't had an issue with that. But I do know some reviews on Amazon said they had that issue. Not sure if that's user error or a problem with the design.
Joni English Yes, when I started draining the oil from my car, it hit those raised sections of this drain pan and oil ricocheted right out of the drain pan and all over the floor !!! I will never use this container to drain, instead, I bought a cheap round drain pan from Walmart . Also, that vent cap is such a joke, won't stay closed, very aggravating , in deed .
The only oil that splashes out is the 0-20 weight synthetic. I never had trouble with 10-30. Weird. I need to buy a mesh pad for it. or a furnace filter I hear works too.
If you don't aim the oil into that little 2 inch hole the oil splatters all over the surface. Why in the world would I want to have to clean up that whole area the oil drains on to? I have used the Lumax for years, Remove the large 8 inch cap, drain the oil and replace the cap. No mess. No Cleanup
I have the open pan. Pull the drain plug and the oil shuts into the large open bowl. After I put the oil back in the empty 5quart jug and bring it to my mechanic where he puts it in his oil burner made to burn used oil to heat his garage
Both of those pans are terrible. The lids don't tighten enough and they leak oil. I bought a Flotool oil recycle jug and have the same problem. Good luck keeping that thing upright while transporting brother. As soon as it lays down it leaks.
the rectangular one does big time. i felt like i needed to tip it upward to minimize splashing - even with that i had a 48" radius of oil splatter everywhere around the pan including all over my hands and forearms and all down all sides of the pan. The small holes from the top plate to the inner compartment are also panic inducingly small as it just about overflowed as the oil was draining. Basically, the pan could barely handle the flow from a straight 6 3 liter gas engine - it is not like i was using it for some industrial engine. Overall - i would rate it about a 2 out of 10 as far as design goes. i wish i had just used a traditional pail.
Looking for a new pan and I I have the round one now with a cracked lid. Is the red cap thread the same as as the green cap, meaning will it fit correctly?
I too have a mid-sized SUV Mazda CX-5. But for me I only need 5 litters, so only a third of the volume of this pan. So this is way way way too large for me.
Why is a plastic jug so expensive? Literally costs pennies to make. I just have a pan and pour the old oil back into the container i bought the new oil into
You are probably right. Someone is probably making a huge margin. Have you ever had issues with the pan splashing back? I have used pans in the past and they are much easier to clean out.
@@ThriftyGarage no not really. Only issue is pouring it back just use a funnel so it won't drip. But otherwise must easier to clean and much cheaper. I never knew how nasty it is to clean the oil and how hard it is to get it all out.

I have the large round one. Easy to replace the cap. Just grab one from a 5 quart oil jug from your fresh oil.Even some quart size caps fit it.

Flotool's video on this doesn't have a single encouraging comment, and I believe them for my use case. Lots of splashing and leaking is the consensus.
@@jrbling25 I will give you an encouraging comment. I haven’t had any issues with mine.
Do they empty this when you take it in or do you have to put it in another container before bringing it to the store?
I always pour into empty oil containers and take several into a parts store for recycling.

That’s a great idea!
The caps on 5qt. motor oil jugs will fit the round drain pan so if that's the only problem then stay with the round pan.
I'm just sick of cheap drain pans.
I didn't know that, thanks for the info man!

Do you use a standard oil drain catch open pan to catch your dirty oil?
Just get a regular open pan with a spout to transfer into your container. These look like they will make a mess. Too complicated for what they do. The open pans have nothing to go wrong with and will last forever
Drill a bigger hole where the two small holes are where the oil goes in it will overflow

does the OIL when Draining SPLASH out ?

I’ve always wanted a used oil burning heater! Probably not the most clean heat but certainly free if you change enough oil.
That’s what I use with no splashing whatsoever except when the oil filter slipped and fell in. lol
can't go wrong with the Garageboss Oil drain pan , adjustable height etc autozone 19.99 i believe
Can you address the splashing out that always happens?
Please make a video of cleaning the outside of the container after you drain the oil. Thanks
Usually I just use brake clean and a rag to wipe it down.

Can someone be kind of to tell me how to clean the inside of the second one after draining the oil or do I just leave it like that?
Leave the residue inside. It’s not an issue. I usually use brake clean to clean the outside.
It's ok to leave ur like that because y'all keep it in a house garage. But keeping it in my apartment closet is dangerous tho no?
You’ll ever get the inside clean and it doesn’t have to be clean.
This pan with red pan has bottom weak and cause leak,
I have not had an issue. I would love to find something more sturdy though. Perhaps USA made.
