- On October 10th, 2023, A Lufthansa Cityline Canadair CRJ-900 was operating flight LH1361 / DLH9LF from Katowice (Poland) to Frankfurt (Germany) when the crew stopped the climb and decided to return to Katowice due to insufficient fuel on board.
The aircraft landed safely in Katowice and took off again 40 minutes later after being refueled.
The airline reported that the fuel indicator was defective and showed the cockpit and ground crew enough fuel was on board while on the ground but changed after becoming airborne.

The main purpose of this video is educational, i.e. to provide example situations for people who want to become pilots or air traffic controllers and to provide them with information. In addition, the aim here is to provide current pilots and air traffic controllers with access to radio conversations around the world so that they can think about how they should behave in situations they are likely to encounter in the future.
While preparing the content, I follow important aviation events and news from around the world. I check whether I can access the radio conversations by looking at the date and time zone of these events.
Then, I listen to the conversations over and over again to prepare subtitles and note down the relevant parts. Finally, I prepare an animation or get it from tracking websites and put it all together.

Such a friendly, professional interaction between the crew and ATF. ❤
Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms?
This is where Jeremy Clarkson would quip about it being the first time the Germans were in Poland without enough in the Tank.
2:45 ATC says "Descend Altitude 5000 ft", you transcribed that as FL5000. This being 500.000 ft would be rather under Kennedy Space Centre...
Yeah, I missed it. Sorry for the mistake and thanks for ur correction.
@@the_flight_records You also put FL6000 a few seconds before :)
Nice big loop, no vectoring squiggle.
Ouch. Stuck fuel indicators are next on my list "why to avoid CRJ900"
Is it a typical CRJ 900 problem?
Mot sure if I'm buying the faulty indicator story...
You were there, so tell us what the real reason was?🤔
@@warren3967 I don't know. Fuck me for being suspicious, right?
Oops, that faulty fuel gauge needs to repaires
Faulty and incorrect fuel indicators have caused major incidents in the past . I recall a lbs v kgs set of indicators being incorrectly installed. I can't remember the incident.
Ah yes the Gimli glider. Air Canada guy just sideslipping a 76 onto a drag strip. Good times.
oooooops
I am a bit confused. Shouldn't they have checked the amount of fuel on board before take off, as part of the pre flight checks? Or did the indicated amount of fuel suddenly change after take off?
your comment is quite old already, but nonetheless, according to the description in the beginning, the indication changed after becoming airborne.
@@Sicklehead88 Thank for your reply! You are right, I did not read the description thorough enough.
Ooooops!
If I have a suspect fuel indicator, I'm filling the tanks all the way up before takeoff. That way I know how much I started with.
That’s exactly the correct procedure in the CRJ-900…for even one malfunctioning fuel sender.
On a jet, you can’t just “fill it up” every time.. because you’ll have takeoff weight limitations, landing weight limitations ect.. unless you want to kick off half the passengers and most of the cargo, you don’t just fill it up..
What do you usually fly?
@@floridaboy1131 I used to fly the CRJ-700 and -900, so I’m familiar.. now I’m flying the 737s.
@@thomasaltruda awesome! I meant for my question to go to the top, I was thinking the same thing. Can’t just fill it up every time 😂 I’m on a challenger 350 now
1:20 The "of course" equals to "don't ask stupid questions"?
It is German way of saying "yes, my bad"
I interpret that as admitting his mistake.
@@rinleez for those who don't know - from that position it was actually closer to Kraków-Balice than to Katowice-Pyrzowice. And few less turns
Didn’t figure that out before takeoff?
This is Lufthansa??
Yeah
Tell me you didn't read the intro comments without telling me you didn't read the intro comments 👇
Wonder why they didn't read their fuel gauges BEFORE takeoff.
They had a reading on the ground and changed after takeoff to a much lower value. It’s written in the description.
@@uy_spotter I see that now. Thanks for pointing that out.
wrong.@@uy_spotter
@@uy_spotteris that an excuse for not checking?
@@slowsteve3497 in any case, the investigation will tell (if there is one). I highly doubt an experienced flight crew would depart without even know how much fuel they have.
Someone uploaded fuel for the wrong sector on a multi-sector day it would appear.
Faulty fuel gauges. Yep.. sure it was 👍🏻
It sure does sound like someone made a big mistake and they're blaming it on a technical issue.
