The dermatologist said that I couldn't do it, so I took the 1 mg tablet and divide it in 2 parts, still expensive for me but as of now I'll do like that. After 6 months on fin I can try to ask my base doctor to give me Proscar by lying in the receipt that I have some kind of prostatic problems, but I doubt she will accept.

    About 3 years ago (mid 2019), I stopped using minoxidil as it didn't seem to be working for me. I was applying it at the temples where I was thinning, but it didn't work to bring back any hair. I was so scared of finasteride because of all the fear mongering, but I was committed to keeping my hair so I scheduled an appointment with a hair transplant surgeon. He told me I had to take finasteride and was so ethical that he said he wouldn't touch my scalp until I was on fin for about 8 months. I was at a norwood 1.5 (norwood 1 in terms of coverage but norwood two interms of density, washed out temples). Sure enough, the hairloss stopped (hairline hadn't moved in the 3 years since). Got my ht, well worth it. A lot of guys who fear finasteride can significantly reduce sides by halving the dose. Can't wait till kx-826 comes out if ever. Then I can be stress free.

    Gave me the confidence to start on finasteride. Been on it for 3 months and I don't know if its psychological but I think my hair has improved. However I decided not to cut my hair during these three months so it might just be rocking longer hair looks better
    I was planning to do an experiment on myself but life was too busy
    I was going to trim my hair to level 4 all over. Then shower and clean up. Then shave my hair bald and weigh the resulting hair
    Then be on finasteride for a year and repeat the experiment. Grow hair out. But cut to grade 4. Clean up and shower. Then shave off and weigh the hair
    That would have given very straightforward result. If the weight of the hair 12 months on finasteride was greater than pre weight it would be good data better than subjective photos pr hair counts (as thicker hair is also important not just count)
    Unfortunately was just a super busy Time in my life so I couldn't so it
    For what it's worth 3 months on fin I feel like my hair has improved but I have no real way of knowing or measuring the amount of improvement

      Sounds like you would need some kind of laser cutting device to get that precise dose from a 1 mg tablet. But it's too bad such low doses weren't looked at more closely in the early studies. I suspect they do work in some people. But I'm also convinced that 0.01 mg pretty clearly is worthless based on the two studies reviewed in the video.

    Hey Kevin. I started fin 4 months ago thanks to you. I got telogen effluvium and noticed a ton of hairs were miniaturizing so hopped on fin. Still have telogen effluvium after 10 months of shedding. It looks like I’m basically going bald at age 20 as I’ve lost 60% of my hair and have no idea where all the hair even went. You can see my scalp in normal lighting at all times now. I started min like 2 months ago and may be experiencing a fin shed at the same time. Can’t tell because I was shedding to begin with. Either way this is brutal since I’m already on treatment but still losing brutal amounts of ground. Thanks for your videos though.

    • @haircafekevin
      @haircafekevin  3 года назад +13

      It's only been 4 months. It's way too soon to determine the efficacy of the treatment, give it a year. Also the telogen effluvium will resolve on its own so it's just a matter of staying on treatment and recovering from whatever traumatic event triggered your telogen effluvium.

    If 0.2mg has roughly 75% of the cosmetic benefits of 1 mg, then 0.5mg must approach 90% given the diminishing returns of the drug and the roughly equivalent serum DHT suppression (67 vs 70 I believe). That means you could theoretically get 90% of the benefits for 50% of the cost and less side effects. Feels like a great bang for you buck for an already dirt cheap drug, although I'm guessing more aggressive balders might not respond.
    Personally I had sides at 1 mg so I cut down to 0.5 mg, but I'm reconsidering on whether the sides were nocebo and I should just go back up to 1mg to be safe and get the full results.

    Thank you Kevin for such an excellent video which substantiates 1mg Finasteride as generally the optimal dosage. I've never experienced side effects from 1mg whole tablets. However, I have tried cutting Proscar tablets into quarters and ended up with a terrible skin rash. I'm guessing that when the enteric coating of the tablet is damaged then it may be assimilated by the body too quickly thus causing a reaction. Not sure if you are aware of this phenomenon.

    • @haircafekevin
      @haircafekevin  3 года назад +4

      I think it's possible that is an unrelated issue. If you were allergic to finasteride you'd have experienced that at 1 MG as well so it could be just something that incidentally happened while you were on finasteride rather than finasteride causing it. You may be allergic to something else.

    • @davidsotir4318
      @davidsotir4318 3 года назад

Some drugs are unstable at the pH of gastric acid and need to be protected from degradation. But I could be wrong in the case of Finasteride....

    Hi Kevin, had a question regarding dosing.
    If I start with 0.5mg every other day at what point will I find out that it isn't working and that maybe I should increase the dosage? There is such a long time gap before fin takes effect it seems like it would take years to find the right dose.
    Thank you.

    Great video as always. Some people seem to experience sensitive nipples while starting oral finasteride. While it goes away for most, it is quite scary nevertheless. Can DIM supplements help with this? Curious about your take on DIM in general, since it seems to be in vogue these days. Thanks in advance!

    • @haircafekevin
      @haircafekevin  3 года назад +3

      It's a hyped up natural supplement that is probably pretty harmless. It definitely wouldn't be a substitute for a full blown AI like arimidex but who knows, maybe for something that only raises estrogen slightly like finasteride it could help. No good research confirming it but no harm in trying in my opinion.

    Quick question. I’m about to start on the 0.5 mg dose, and I’m wanting to take it Every other day. I’ve heard from multiple doctors, some say every day is better to avoid rise and fall in DHT levels, some say every other day could be better to avoid sides. Your thoughts?

    Just thought I’d share my experience with Finasteride here. I tried using Fin 3 separate times. First time using .5 mg every day. After two weeks I experienced severe brain fog, tiredness, and dizziness. I immediately stopped the drug and consulted with my doctor. Tried again a few weeks later but with .5 mg every other day. Same thing happened around the one week mark but I wanted to stay on to make sure I was giving it a fair chance. Gave it one more week and the same thing happens. Nausea, very tired, dizziness, and brain fog. On my 3rd attempt I tried .25 mg every other day. After one week at this does the same effects happened only I did notice sexual side effects. (Although, this could’ve been due to the brain fog I was experiencing where I basically felt so car sick all of the time.) Just thought I’d share in case anyone else had a similar experience.

    hey Kev, is there a reason YOU don't use 1mg or 0.5 daily if the benefits are the same as the 1.25 daily you use?
    Also, did you start on 1.25 daily and not bother changing it? or did you start at a lower dose and go up because it wasn't working

    I was cautious about it thanks to the scare mongering so I got topical dutasteride which from what I read would have the least chance of side effects. Then went even further and used way lower than the recommended dose of 1ml a day, using only 0.25ml once a week. Still it did reduce my hair loss after 3 months but only a negligible amount so I still was losing more hairs than I was growing back through the growth stimulant side, so upped it to 1ml once a week. Now that's had more of an effect. I am looking to increase it to 2 times a week to reduce hair loss further. Absolutely no side effects so far and using it just once a week is pretty easy.

    Dr. Knudsen of the hair loss show said that Finasteride's half life in the blood is 6-8 hrs, but in the scalp is close to two days, so it must be taken every other day. Did you manage to find any paper demonstrating Fin's half life in the scalp?
    All I could find is the 6-8 hr half-life in the blood, which would align with the 1mg/day dose as prescribed. As it would be out of the system within 24 hrs.

    • @haircafekevin
      @haircafekevin  2 года назад +1

      This article (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3481923/) says that tissue binding is 4-5 days. Even if it is 2 days as Dr. Knudsen says, that doesn't mean you have to take it every 2 days. You can take a drug more frequently than its half-life. If you do so you will have fewer peaks and valleys in the serum drug level, so that actually can be a good strategy, which is why some intravenous drugs are given as a continuous drip. Anyway, the whole half-life issue may be moot, because the biologic effect of blocking 5AR lasts longer than the half life, which is why DHT levels can take weeks to return to normal after stopping finasteride. Anyway, no matter how you take it, you will eventually reach a steady state, but we know that really low doses like 0.01 mg per day aren't effective because they don't lower DHT enough. I'm all for every other day dosing, but I doubt dosing once a week of less is effective.

    I'm curious to hear what your thoughts on dutasteride dosing are. Assuming someone tolerates 0.5mg dutasteride perfectly fine, are there any benefits of increasing the dose? According to the study "The importance of dual 5alpha-reductase inhibition in the treatment of male pattern hair loss: results of a randomized placebo-controlled study of dutasteride versus finasteride" dutasteride is dose depended, with 2.5mg of dutasteride being much more effective than the standard 0.5mg. Would love to hear your opnion!

    • @haircafekevin
      @haircafekevin  3 года назад +3

      Yes, 2.5 MG of dutasteride is more effective than 0.5 MG but the chances that 0.5 mg of dutasteride will not be enough for you are very low.
      Lots of times people will respond well to finasteride or dutasteride but then they'll get hair greed and think they can get insane results if they incorporate a nuclear stack. Only so much regrowth is possible no matter how strong of a stack you use, even castrates don't regrow hair that is too far gone.

I really tried. 1.25 every other day,then I tried propecia cut in half every other day just in case that it would be better than the 5mg finasteride I was using before… at least I tried and I encourage every young man who’s losing their hair to try and don’t be afraid 🤟

      Really appreciate how you don't give into spite and still encourage finasteride use despite not having a positive experience with the drug itself.
      That being said, maybe give 0.25 MG every other day a shot as it seems you haven't tried that dosage yet. You may have better luck.
